Harbaugh Completed 2-Hour Virtual Interview With Broncos Yesterday

Considered a "top candidate" afterwards. Article here

I love Coach Harbaugh, and really hope he stays at UM forever. That being said, I have a feeling that spending two hours on Zoom with Jim would be...weird. He's the kind of guy that stares directly at his web cam and uses the "raise hand" button when he wants to talk and the "applause" button when someone says something he likes...

You realize he doesn’t have to sign a contract with a ridiculous buyout, right? It's not about the money anyway. Harbaugh would rather coach in the NFL. He needs to just say that so Michigan can move on. We are just the cute girl at school, until the hot girl says yes. I'm not mad at the guy, but he needs to stop playing with the cute girls emotions.

I get it when people talk about these buyouts and making it "hard" for the NFL to poach him, but why would Harbaugh agree to that clause and sign the contract? That does not seem to be in his best interest. I doubt any of us here would sign a contract that would prevent us from moving elsewhere if we wanted to.

Also, he signed a new five-year contract after last season, so it's not like he's still coaching on that 2020 contract. Seems like a lot of people still think he's on that. Like he made north of 10 million this year.

Folks. IMHO it's a mistake to say this is about money. This is about what Jim wants to do. So, if he wants to go to the NFL he is going to try like hell to get a job there. Flying to Minnesota last year. Interviewing with Denver and whoever else this year. I wouldn't pay him any more. He's got a contract but he really doesn't want to be here. So...let's do whatever we can to help Jim land the NFL job he so badly wants and we can all part gracefully. And we can move on to the Sharrone Moore era. Or Chris Klieman. Or Lance Leipold. Or Shane Beamer. Or whatever other name comes up.

But not Kliff Kingsbury.

NO. Do not offer a long-term contract. So many here assume this is about contract leverage. I doubt that. I believe he wants to go back to the NFL. Not sure what is so hard to comprehend about that. But you don't give long-term contracts to people who do not show through their actions that they are 100% committed.

We need to stop thinking of ourselves as a program that needs to find the next up-and-coming coach at the right moment, like MSU does. We have the cachet and the money to do what USC did last year, and poach the best coaches available even if they're seemingly entrenched at another successful program. There are only a handful of college coaches out there for whom Michigan wouldn't be a step up, both in money and in prestige. If Harbaugh leaves, let's fire the money cannon and go get our top target, regardless of when in the year it is or whether he is "available".

Lincoln Riley was pissed because he didn't want to join the SEC. He had an easy path at Oklahoma. Also, not many of these types of coaches want to deal with all of the additional hurdles at Michigan. Not trying to re-litigate RR, but he did not get the fairest of shakes from the Michigan old guard. He had a lot of self-inflicted problems too. Michigan can't get out of its own way. Harbaugh can deal with that. A lot of coaches can't or won't if they have options.

I'm sure you recall how 208 shook out.  Where Lloyd said the "job finds you."  I am hoping that it doesn't turn out to be the cluster that we saw immediately after RichRod came.

Some close to the program hellbent on ruining the program.  It set us back years.

JH's replacement is virtually assured to be an in-house hire.

I don’t think that’s inherently true. This Michigan job isn’t some run of the mill opening. Michigan is likely a preseason top 5 team with a pretty damn favorable schedule and a ton of returning talent. Whoever takes over is likely in for a big Year 1 and would have a lot to build upon.

A national search would probably turn up some interest that would surprise us. No harm in putting feelers out and keeping Moore as one of your candidates. Just handing him the job without opening it up to external candidates doesn’t make sense.

100% agree bluemark. The Michigan job would be extremely attractive if it comes open. I know it always has been, but Michigan is a top 3-5 program right now with a loaded roster. Oh and with the new B1G media deal, it will attract coaches that seem to maybe be unrealistic.

I think Moore is a great coach, but his first head coaching job should not be at UM. I hope Harbaugh comes back, but if he decides to leave, then this should be without a doubt a national search.

This is a dumb take. You use you best players and Corum was arguably the best player in the country. It is like saying "I love that our offense doesn't throw to Nico Collins.

I believe Harbaugh will be back but Moore is probably the only candidate who can keep most this staff together, proven elite recruiter, proven elite position coach, and he helped orchestrate both our playoff offenses. He would be a worthy candidate if we need one.

Hiring Mo right after Bo worked out pretty well from a seamless upgrade of the football excitement sort of way.  If we're going to fire a money cannon at someone outside of the program fire it at Jimmy first.  My amateur psych career suggests show him the respect he deserves after the last 2 years and he will stay for that contract.  The NFL dalliances have to end now

The thing is that Harbaugh has all the leverage in the world right now, lunkheaded 4th and 2 trick plays in the Fiesta Bowl notwithstanding.  He's coming off two consecutive playoff seasons and is favored to do that all again.  As far as he's concerned, he can do whatever the eff he wants regarding contract negotiations and he's probably not wrong.

For anyone saying that Warde should give Harbaugh an ultimatum demanding that he stay or go, given EVERYTHING we as casual fans know about Harbaugh - how do you think a guy like that responds to an ultimatum?  Does he strike you as a guy that is easily cowed by someone pointing at him and demanding he does something?

The bottom line - again - is that everything we're hearing is calculated leaks by various parties who want that information out there for the public discourse and, as Seth as explained far better than I numerous times, is likely coming from agents.  The only thing I'd add to that is that you have to consider what a "source's" angle might be before taking a leak at face value.

As a (hopefully) hypothetical exercise: Let's say someone tweets that "Sources close to the situation reveal that MGoUser kehnonymous has been discussed as the next victim of murderclown FauxMo"  If that comes from me, it probably means that I'm trying to alert the authorities to watch out for a murder clown.  But if the leak is from FauxMo, then it's likely a calculated attempt to psych me out and keep me from leaving the house for a few days.  There's certainly some overlap between those two scenarios but the actual truth varies a lot when given the context of who is leaking stuff.

I don't think money is the prime motivator.  He'll get a lot no matter where he goes.  The marginal $'s are not going to be what moves him.

He keeps interviewing because he wants to go back to the NFL.  That is not going to change until he winds up back there.  Only the timing is up in the air.

Ultimatums, when not clearly needed because of a hard time deadline, are rarely effective as a bargaining technique unless you have all of the leverage (which Michigan does not). If you want someone bad enough to make them a large offer, then you don't risk insulting/pissing them off, with an ultimatum. If you hope they will reject it but are doing it to play to your constituents, then OK, but that isn't serious negotiating.

Agree with everything except promoting Moore. Hasn't been in charge of his own program, and this isn't the time. Give him a raise, let it be known you want him to stay for continuity. But thing program is elite right now and deserves an elite or established coach.

Definitely agree this can't drag on. He promised last year it was a one-time thing, and he went back on that, the very next year. His prerogative, but Warde can't accept being jerked around every year, and we can't continue to let recruiting suffer because the coach isn't committed; we should be benefitting from two years in the CFP, not dealing with this BS.

I have zero confidence that Warde can manage this effectively.

Jim ought to be the highest paid in college. 10-years, $125 million. I’m sure Kirby will get a big extension right after, but Jim is more than worth the bump to $125 million. It is so much easier to build a playoff program at a warm climate college. As Colin Cowherd said last week, “Jim is great for Michigan, Michigan is great for Jim. There are only 8 great college coaches. If you land one, take care of him.”
