Greg Roman is out of a job

Greg Roman just stepped down as Ravens OC. No one knows how this Weiss situation will shake out but if it goes bad would you take Roman for Co-OC? As most of you should know Roman was with Jim at Stanford and was his OC with the 49ers.

If you watched the team you see him just absolutely failing the offense with Lamar at QB and Lamar being good enough it didn't matter. You'd consistently have drives that were 3rd and medium and long and the passing concept would wind up with three receivers going out including a fullback and the two guys going downfield would be within 10 yards of each other and 20 yards downfield. And then Lamar would make a couple of guys miss and pick up the first down with his legs or scramble until a guy got open. Week after week you would have examples of professionals mocking his route and passing concepts on twitter. And its not like Lamar can't handle a complex passing game, that is what he ran at Louisville under Petrino. He is also terrible at managing games, gets play calls in late, etc.

He is obviously brilliant at designing running concepts but any success the Ravens have had in the last three years has been despite Roman, not because of him. I don't know a single Ravens fan not thrilled he's gone.

Probably a pipe dream, but he's certainly a great coach.  He's coached a wide variety of qb's with different skillsets.  Don't think he'd want to head back to college ball and accept a Co-OC role after so much success in the NFL though.  Could possibly be related to Lamar's contract as well.  Have no clue how you handle such a dynamic player who probably wont make it through many seasons due to injury.  Tough financial commitment to make in a team sport.

I don't understand the downvotes for the OP?  I saw the headline on ESPN earlier and immediately wondered if he would be a candidate for any position on the staff.  It's a valid question so why is this getting downvoted?  Or are we not tired of the worn out Feagin jokes?

Been here longer than that.  I remember The WLA and the old comment system (Haloscan?) which was like a giant group text.  And it was way cooler then because the self-appointed Board Police weren't roaming around looking for semantics to downvote.

And the Feagin jokes show up on every thread, no matter what, so at this point anyone who makes it is just Michael Scott making a That's What She Said joke.

Maybe I'm just a grouchy millenial but it annoys me when a good board topic turns into tired jokes and people demanding more clarity in the title, as if their time could have been wasted elsewhere.

"It's a valid question ..."

I'd suggest you're missing the point. By MGoBlog standards (any reasonable standards, really) it's the title that's drawing fire. To me it looks lazy and useless. "Greg Roman as OC?" (just seven additional characters) would be a huge improvement.

Justin Feagin?

But seriously to the OP's point, if Weiss were to move on, I think I'd rather promote Sharone to solo OC and bring in another young assistant with recruiting chops.  Roman obviously has ties and has performed well at times, but not sure I love the fit anymore.

I don't know about his personality but I think he's more pliable about his offense than what we saw at the Ravens.  In fact, he should get a ton of credit for molding an offense around Lamar since no one has run that in the NFL.  I doubt he runs that same offense ever again given how unique Lamar's talents are.  But I bet he is a great run-game coordinator given how much those running schemes could be applied to an offense that doesn't feature a QB as their best running threat.

The fact that he didn't come with Harbaugh to UM may indicate that he wants to stay in the NFL, or get back to it at some point, but he's probably a good addition to any college staff in some capacity.

Its actually all he's ever proven good at. The 49ers offense took off when Kaepernick's legs got involved. The little bit of success he had at Buffalo was with a relatively mobile guy in Tyrod Taylor and then his offense went gang busters for a year when he got the most talented guy in Lamar and then people figured out he didn't know how to design a complete offense and its been downhill since then

My instinctive reaction to this is negative, because all I remember from Jim Harbaugh's final season with the Niners (the only one in which they didn't make the playoffs) is that Niners fans were calling for Roman's head and openly wondering why Harbaugh seemed so stubbornly loyal to him.

Which makes sense because he is great at what he does. It's funny he gets tons of grief from the peanut gallery but he finds ways to get the most of every offense he runs. Had the number 1 team in the country at Stanford and they regressed when he left. Figured out how to make Smtih and Kaepernick work and developed an offense around Lamar Jackson.

We'll see how well it works out in Baltimore. I strongly suspect there is a finite supply of coordinators that can use Lamar Jackson as well as Roman has.

He got blamed a bit too much for some woes this year (the Ravens have a pretty mediocre receiving corps and had injuries to Dobbins at RB) but doesn't feel like an upgrade at OC to Moore and he's not recruited in forever.

RG3 had this to say about Roman:

"Greg Roman may be of the greatest run game tacticians I have ever been around at the NFL level. RBs and TEs love his system because they EAT. WRs absolutely hate it. That’s why free agent WRs didn’t want to go to or stay in Baltimore."

Sadly, he fits our system to a T.
