Greg Roman is out of a job

Greg Roman just stepped down as Ravens OC. No one knows how this Weiss situation will shake out but if it goes bad would you take Roman for Co-OC? As most of you should know Roman was with Jim at Stanford and was his OC with the 49ers.

Barrett will be our AD, co-OC, Viper, Will LB, emergency QB and Special Teams All-American WHILE ALSO taking a full load of graduate courses, a full social calendar and fulfilling community service needs throughout Washtenaw County.

A lesser man might crumble under the weight of those responsibilities, Mike will tackle each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

Thread title error! C'mon man, it's not that hard to type an extra word or two to explain.

It's semi-OT, but obviously has some relevance due to Michigan's relationship with the Ravens and Harbaugh's previous relationship with Roman at Stanford and San Francisco.

Roman's an interesting case. In two different places he unleashed an offense with an advanced rushing attack based off of a running QB and saw immense success. And in both cases the initial success gave way to gradual decline, and eventually a change in venue.

He has demonstrated enough to get another gig; he's also something of a known quantity in some ways.

I don't want to speculate what, if anything, would happen to Weiss. And Roman has been rumored to be a HC candidate before for places like Stanford. But, should it come to that, I'd definitely be on board if that were the direction Harbaugh wanted to go.

Honestly, though, if something happens to Weiss, I think the likelier situation is that Moore gets another promotion.

He's pretty much the opposite of what Michigan needs. His offenses only work with a truly dynamic rushing QB who you are willing to run and his passing concepts are routinely mocked and in no way build on what the running game does to a defense. His terrible play calling has been dragged to success by Lamar and been completely exposed any time he is out.

He also routinely gets play calls in with 8 or 9 seconds left on the play clock forcing rushed snaps, procedural penalties, and wasted timeouts on the regular. It would be an absolutely atrocious hire if your hope is for Michigan to take the next step offensively with a returning starter at QB.

Very fair points. He and Harbaugh are similar and their strengths and weaknesses are similar to an extent that it is difficult for those of us outside to determine whether Roman or (Jim) Harbaugh are the ones responsible. Talented QBs that show great potential and seem to flatline? Staffs that take too long to get plays on the field? Running games with many different looks but passing games that don't quite seem to have it?

Together at San Fran. Separately at Michigan and Baltimore. Where does Greg end and Jim begin?

But it does mean they know each other and there's a synergy. And, for what it's worth, if you want to use JJ's legs more, Greg is *the* guy.

Like I said, I'd be fine with this. Should something happen to Weiss, I don't expect Jim Harbaugh to go in a completely different direction. Consistency, not revolution; Roman is the kind of guy that brings that. Gattis, frankly, was the "change the offense" guy and the result was a bad offense in MIami and an offense that looks a lot like Greg Roman's at Michigan.

But I think if something happens to Weiss Jim Harbaugh can get the same basic utility by promoting Moore, and strengthen another part of the staff with a different hire instead.

To your overall point its clear that Harbaugh has vision for an offense, so it doesn't make sense to bring in an air raid guy to try to modernize the passing game since it won't matter.

But your last paragraph summarizes why not to do it. There is literally no upside. Greg Roman as offensive coordinator does absolutely nothing to make the team better. He won't help the offense take the next step, he's not a good recruiter from his time at Stanford, and he won't challenge Harbaugh's worst tendencies but excarcebate them. Given that, using the staff spot somewhere else and just letting Moore be the sole OC has more benefit for the team, even if its just brining in a guy who can't coach very well but is a great recruiter.

Who would find ways to use JJ’s arm and the WRs?  Nobody currently on staff can do that now, and Moore/Hart/Roman sure as hell wouldn’t!  The rush now, then, and all the time offense has hit a brick wall it couldn’t move in the playoffs twice in a row.  I believe that trend will continue unless someone that can spell ‘pass’ joins the fray in a role that has meaning.

I saw the headline and thought the opposite: maybe John Harbaugh will hire superstar Matt Weiss as his OC so that Michigan can move on.
