Not really built for zone blocking

and Hamilton for just a year. But what's better, cutting your losses and making a change or sticking it out and hoping things turn around with guys that aren't working out?

there comes a "fish or cut bait moment" and i think the bad losses due to garbage Offensive output this season got Harbaugh to the "cut bait" part of the equation.

guys are nomads. Feel bad for their family. Every few years it's somewhere else.

I've lived in Ann Arbor, Austin, Minneapolis and visited plenty of other college towns and they're definitely not all the same... do you think EL and A2 are comparable?
January 4th, 2018 at 7:16 PM ^
I blame Drevno for Frey not working out here. Which, I guess, means I blame Harbaugh twice for it -- once for hiring and sticking with Drevno and once for failing to meld Frey+Drevno into something coherent.
Meanwhile, those who say that Frey built the best Michigan OL of the last decade are precisely correct. Given that Molk/Schofield/Lewan unit and what he did at IU, he's far closer to a rising star than someone deserving our grumpusing. He didn't fail for lack of coaching talent. He probably** failed because he wasn't put in a position to succeed.
It's all so strange. Harbaugh knowingly hired a star coach who didn't clearly fit on his staff and...never bridged that gap. Which is doubly antithetical.
**(because how could I, an outsider, know more than to say that some interpersonal dynamic in Schembechler Hall is maybe / probably true?)

That doesn't mean he was a good fit for what Harbaugh apparently wants to do.
January 4th, 2018 at 7:55 PM ^
agreed the guy can coach just not a good fit for what we're doing. that Indiana line from a few years ago was killer. the experiment with his zone blocking schemes has been tried twice at michigan but both times they were trying to fit square pegs into round holes as far as personnel.

Frey was a hack, is a hack, and will always be a hack. It's not an excuse. Its the truth. He was a bad hire in the first place.
Hamilton, Frey, Drevno. I am starting to worry that Harbaugh, while still a 110% energy kinda guy, no longer puts 110% into finding good hires.

But can't blame him for going to his alma mater. We'll be fine.

the hire to begin with. One of the reasons the defense reloaded with 9 new starters is because the scheme did not change. I think it was a critical error on Harbaugh's part to bring Frey in and introduce a totally new concept to an inexperienced line.

Its the nature of the game you bring in young up and comers and other teams offer them OC DC or HC postions so you lose them after a few years at the most you bring in older guys and they retire after a few years in Freys case hes going back to his alma mater I don't fault him for that at the same time I think we needed a change too

I don't get all the downvotes on people's post who are glad he's gone. Did most of you want him to stay or something? And if so why?
IMO him and Drevno's schemes clashed and one, or both had to go.

There's sure a lot of vitriol in here for a guy who did really well here in his first stint and gets an incomplete for his 2nd time around. I suspect he's a very good OL coach who walked into an offensive mess this season. One which he had no hope to transform in a few months

i feel like this staff was hap-hazardly put together for 2017. Yeah, positions were filled, but they seemed like they were just in those spots to check off a box.
