ESPN article ranks UM QB situation 29/131
The article reads both as a grouping by situation and a ranking of all 131 teams' QB situations:
1 C.J. Stroud (Ohio State)
2 Caleb Williams (USC)
3 Bryce Young (Alabama)
4 Devin Leary (NC State)
5 Cam Rising (Utah)
6 Tyler Van Dyke (Miami)
7 Stetson Bennett (Georgia)
8 Brennan Armstrong (Virginia)
9 Malik Cunningham (Louisville)
10 Sam Hartman (Wake Forest)
11 Hendon Hooker (Tennessee)
12 Grayson McCall (Coastal Carolina)
13 Aidan O'Connell (Purdue)
14 Will Rogers (Mississippi State)
15 KJ Jefferson (Arkansas)
16 Dorian Thompson-Robinson (UCLA)
17 Spencer Rattler (South Carolina)
18 Will Levis (Kentucky)
19 Dillon Gabriel (Oklahoma)
20 Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card (Texas)
21 Blake Shapen (Baylor)
22 Anthony Richardson (Florida)
23 Jaxson Dart (Ole Miss)
24 Cameron Ward (Washington State)
25 Kedon Slovis and Nick Patti (Pittsburgh)
26 JT Daniels (West Virginia)
27 Hank Bachmeier (Boise State)
28 Phil Jurkovec (Boston College)
"Tier 7: You might not have noticed, but they're pretty good (five players, four jobs):
29 Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy (Michigan)
30 Adrian Martinez (Kansas State)
31 Payton Thorne (Michigan State)
32 Taulia Tagovailoa (Maryland)
"What to make of the Michigan QB situation? McNamara led the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff last season and became the first Michigan QB to beat Ohio State since Denard Robinson, a decade earlier. That he struggled against Georgia's defense in the Orange Bowl simply puts McNamara in a long line of QBs who met their match against the Bulldogs. Yet, it's impossible to look at McCarthy's talent and not have visions of an even brighter future with a more dynamic QB -- one who might ultimately be good enough to test even the toughest of defenses. Still, Michigan went the better part of a decade trying to find just one decent option at QB, so perhaps Wolverines fans shouldn't be so quick to assume they have two capable starters now."
Other B1G/2022 opponents:
37 Sean Clifford (Penn State)
39 Tanner Morgan (Minnesota)
49 Graham Mertz (Wisconsin)
63 Connor Bazelak, Jack Tuttle and Donoven McCulley (Indiana)
70 Casey Thompson, Logan Smothers and Chubba Purdy (Nebraska)
72 Spencer Petras and Alex Padilla (Iowa)
88 Ryan Hilinski (Northwestern)
89 Tommy DeVito and Artur Sitkowski (Illinois)
90 Noah Vedral and Gavin Wimsatt (Rutgers)
102 Joey Yellen, Brayden Schager and Cammon Cooper (Hawai'i)
111 Clay Millen (CSU)
125 Ta'Quan Roberson and Tyler Phommachanh (UConn)
I leaned toward the cyaning at certain points of last year, but even at my most pessimistic, this ranking is ridiculous. I get that it's a bit tongue-in-cheek, but we're listed under four teams' situations that are described as "just stay healthy".
"Win the game."
That's all Cade has done his whole life.
His limitations were on painful display against Georgia.
Your limitations are on display all day, every day, but sure doesn't slow you down, much as we'd all prefer
several qbs on this list showed some "limitations" against UGA, as the article included. Check out Hendon Hooker's stats
Hendon wasn't one of the (allegedly) 5?
Anybody know the whereabouts of Craig James last football season?
#CJK5H
That defense stoned everyone they played, excluding the first game against Bama but including the second game against Bama.
at least he only showed them once last year. you do it every time your fingers make a clicky noise on a keyboard.
I mean our fastest backs were getting caught by backside defensive linemen that game too. Let’s cool it a bit.
Their big gigantic fat guy that can't play half a game without having to suck oxygen chased down and caught Corum, think it was late first or early 2nd quarter. We knew the game was completely out of reach that early.
Also, there's no way i'll ever believe those guys weren't filled to the brim with PEDs.
Our OL got manhandled by GA D line. And our D line got handled with very little pass rush. That game came down to one simple fact, GA owned and controlled the LOS.
..."so perhaps Wolverines fans shouldn't be so quick to assume they have two capable starters now."
I'm very comfortable saying we have two capable starters now. We just won the B1G, beat OSU and made the CFP with these two QB's. I'm far more comfortable with either of these two than many of the guys listed above them.
Its not even that part of the sentence that is annoying to me - its the "we havent had a good qb in a decade, so we should assume we dont have one now" bullshit? 9 of the top 23 are SEC. shocking i tell you. Unrelated - Clifford blows.
Rattler just stunk it up, lost his job, transferred and that is a better situation for S. Carolina? Texas has no idea how either of their QBs will perform in game, but they have it better than us? LOL
I don't think the ranking is as unfair to Michigan as most on here because Cade just wasn't asked to do much. He threw less than 20 passes in 7 games last year. He threw more than 30 only twice.
But I just don't get the Rattler love. He wasn't great as a freshman when he had happy feet and then was worse as a sophomore when he got benched. The logical inference is that he's just not very good, not that going to a new place is going to resurrect his career.
Same with Texas. Hudson Card sucked last year. PERIOD. He's a miss. And in Ewers last competitive game he was getting his ass kicked by Katy High School.
My man better check out the spring game. Michigan might have 3 capable qb's with Davis? Especially with Michigan's o-line and weapons this year.
The minute they put Caleb Williams ahead of Bryce Young this list became irrelevant to me
The fact that the reigning Heisman winner isn’t number 1 overall is insanity. As usual, ESPN fucks everything up.
I don't have a problem with him not being #1 because he had the best receiver in college, but OSU had #2, #3 and #4, but no lower than #2.
I don't have a huge problem with him being #2 to the Heisman runner-up but I have a very big problem with him being behind a sophomore who only had decent success as a part time starter at a different school
There are not 28 teams with a better quarterback room than Michigan. Piss off, ESPN.
No shot. I think with all the WR talent and a solid oline...we are gonna put up some passing yards this season.
It's not all about the yards. That's some OSU shit.
For sure it isnt about yards. I think our quarterbacks are a bit underrated because they did not put the biggest numbers last year. I think the country will see how talented they are this season cause they should be able to put up some bigger numbers.
Maybe throwing for a lot of yards would attract the best QBs and WRs to come here? That's some "OSU shit" I can get behind.
If we can't put up some impressive passing numbers with this offensive personnel, I'm not sure we ever will.
Or we could become Purdue and hang our hat on 1 big win every other year while we go 7-5.
I totally agree. I don't think there are 10 on that list where I would trade our QB situation for their situation.
Troof. 28 schools would not pass up on having one of our Mac's start for them.
We also have a dood in the RB's room who had Passer Rating of 1060 last yr.
I am not too crazy about the sharing playing time setup. I just hope we have a definitive winner that starts for the entire season. I know Cade cannot run the option as well as JJ, so it might not be an option to have a single QB if Cade wins the starting job again...
It is a joke how low they rated our guys.
Welp, we all know Graham Mertz is a better QB than Cade (looking at you Seth) so I'd say a ranking in the 50s would be more appropriate
The list seems to be largely a mix of stargazing and seniority bias.
I guess I haven’t paid enough attention to Purdue lately. Aiden O’Connell is 13??? Never heard of him.
If you have any friends in East Lansing, I assure you they have heard of him. (About 580 yards worth..)
That said I think the kid is getting more hype than warranted -- (not Clayton Thorson level over-hype mind you.)
Nice!!! Sparty was flying high until they met him.
Uhm.. did you just not watch or follow the B1G outside of Michigan last year? His performance vs. MSU is the reason we got to go to Indy. Don’t know where he should slot it in the national rankings, but I think O’Connell at the #2 spot in the B1G is about right.
O'Connell is a very good QB and would not be surprised to see him have an outstanding year and go high in the NFL draft
We’ll see how his year goes without David Bell to bail his ass out.
ESPN is the Field Marshall Douglas Haig of football prognostication, always fighting the last war and then with a strong bias to their own interests.
Cade and JJ are 29th?
UN-DER-A-TED *clap clap clapclapclap*
Not a chance I click the link to that garbage
9 of the top 25 QB situations are in the SEC? And this ranking comes from ESPN you say?
Shocking.
Stetson Bennett at 7 is crazy town.
That ranking is clickbait all the way.
That’s going to change when the season starts and McCarthy takes over as the starter.
Why write that?
Because he’s a troll who likes getting banned.
This is a serious question: why not write that, if that’s my opinion?
