[edited] 97.1 FM host tells Michigan fans to avoid “tinder box” Spartan Stadium unless they want to be attacked and “eat a battery”

Submitted by chuck bass on July 27th, 2023 at 8:39 AM

“I’d like to offer a public service announce. I’m being real with you … people are nuts … friendly advice if you’re a Michigan fan … don’t be there. It’s going to be the most hostile environment in the history of the rivalry. It will be a tinder box. Don’t be there. I would never be at that game if I was a Michigan fan … just find something else to do … Spartan fans are going to be foaming … eff around and find out.”

[edit @ 11:30 am: I removed the Valenti link.  Brian has made it clear (see the FAQ section) that Valenti links are disallowed.  If you still feel the need to click on anything Valenti,

1) don't expect to find a link anywhere on MGoBlog; and

2) seek help.

Don't kid yourself. I went there. A 4-8 record with a win over a preseason Playoff contender Michigan would absolutely be a success in EL.

Absolute toxic filth-ridden fanbase. I listen to them all the time on their high horses moralizing about everything else and acting like they're such upstanding people, then they'll justify this trash from Valenti with, "Well, it's different, it's Michigan fans."

It's a fucking. College. Football. Game. Get a damn life.

Attending a football game = "eff around and find out"

This is all you need to know about their mentality. What a sad bunch of losers.

Also, as said above Valenti B.S. is ban worthy.

Sometimes I don’t know what is worse Detroit sports teams or Detroit sports radio? I’m amazed at how many listen to that station

I've been there a couple times in games we were strong favorites.  No issues other than a gentle "accidental" bump on a guy getting to his seat.  I imagine it would be different for a game they expected to win.

The night game may not help, but I'm going.

I went a couple times. Once sat in their student section with a Henson jersey on. Guy threw a full cup at ice at me totally missed me and smoked a female in front of me square in the head. I never laughed so hard in my life at the aim.

No Valenti on this board, but with that being said Valenti and a lot of people associate with MSU are increasing the vitriol in this rivalry. Speaking violence into existence is bullshit and it's weird how MSU fans say Valenti doesn't speak them for them, but they also simultaneously defend what he said

I'm glad it was posted to the board.  This isn't a post about Valenti giving his dumb opinions and observations.  This is about him talking out loud about Michigan fans being attacked if they come to the game.  Seems like an appropriate topic for this board.

Exactly, that's where I come out. It's not like anyone here is promoting him, we're having a discussion about his issuing a direct threat of physical violence against sports fans in the blatantly obvious hope that it will manifest. And his pathetic attempt to terrorize Michigan fans out of attending the game.

I know a lot of Spartan Alums, and they DO NOT cling to everything that goofball says.  He's a radio schtick trying to get ratings and be relevant.   There are certainly a lot of garbage State fans, but I think it is worth noting that the average alumni on campus are generally pleasant unless you are talking trash or trying to draw attention.

We're gonna pound them so hard, most Sparties will be gone by the end of the 3rd - which should abate most of the conflicts. I'm gonna enjoy watching them get destroyed.

Dude is a clown.  When you have to warn opposing fans about their safety at your school's campus for a sporting event you are on the wrong side.

No big deal. Here's the Spartan student section with 2 minutes left in the 1st half and Michigan up by 3 scores:

It's crazy how they're trying to use the tunnel incident as if it was something Michigan did.  They're rallying because of last year's game where their team assaulted our players in the tunnel?  Wild.

I would think that a campus and collegiate body that has suffered an active shooter and gone through all that entails would be less keen on violence particularly in light of how UM embraced them at Crisler. Hopefully everyone is able to keep their shit together.

Mel at media day: “How do you rein it in? I don’t know how you do that,” Tucker said.

Meanwhile, Valenti: “…eff around and find out.”

Yeah, okay.

I mean, I didn't need to even click on the post to know it was Mike Valenti but I guess good to confirm my expectations.

He's a chode and anyone in that fanbase excited to start fights with Michigan fans because their team lost last year and then acted like petulant children afterwards should reevaluate their lives.

"[...] anyone in that fanbase excited to start fights with Michigan fans because their team lost last year and then acted like petulant children afterwards should reevaluate their lives."

Probably being an optimist but maybe the courts can help them do that.

I’d like to think most MSU fans are reasonable enough to go to that game, cheer for their team, boo Michigan, but never get to the point where they want to take their anger out on some random Michigan fan and resort to violence.

Unfortunately, there will probably be at least a handful of MSU fans who take this guy’s words to heart, and will want to go out that night with the intent of beating some random Michigan fan to a pulp out of some misguided sense of bringing about justice.

Unfortunately, we see rhetoric like this way too often in society today, and not just with sports. The “fuck around with us and find out“ mantra from certain segments of low-brow people with insecurity issues and a massive inferiority complex, who are just begging for a fight, and who want to truly scare people into not doing something. These kinds of people are human garbage and not worth the chair they sit on.

I’m all for hating your rival and wishing them failures when it’s on the field. But that should be where it ends. When you make it personal, or when you want to actually threaten someone’s well-being over it…..my god do you have grossly misaligned life priorities. I don’t care who your rival is or what they’ve done. Encouraging people to resort to violence who is never the answer.

The same can, and should be said, to any Michigan fan who feels this way about approaching and attacking MSU fans

Mike Valenti's job is to get Michigan and MSU fans talking about him. That's just the talk radio recipe. And it's off-season for most sports, so the urge to talk nonsense to generate controversy is even greater.

I suspect the people most likely to go aggro on Michigan fans are young guys who get drunk and want to show off in front of their buddies. I also suspect most of them don't listen to Mike Valenti. 90% of sports radio listeners are over 25 years old and 60+% are over 45 years old. So do you think the 50 year old dude who listens to Valenti is going to to the game with brass knuckles because of what Valenti says? Pretty unlikely.

I am 100% going now. Went to EL 2yrs ago and the vibe was fine, tons of M fans and no hostility or physicality in or around the stadium. Was in Columbus for the 2016 ref show too. The supposed violence of these "hardcore fans" is totally overrated.

The more of us that come, the less intimidating it will be. Let's show up and help negate whatever crap calls the refs would otherwise be intimidated into calling.
