Don Brown A Finalist for Temple HC Job
Per the Philadelphia Inquirer
We could find out today the new Temple football coach. Three DC's Mike Elko (Texas A&M), Manny Diaz (Miami), & Don Brown (Michigan) are thought to be in the running. Based on some conversations, my gut says Elko is the favorite, but we will see.

Feels like Brown is going to get a raise.
I highly doubt he leaves for Temple. It also sounds like Elko is out of the running, so my guess is Manny Diaz is the pick here. Young guy, clearly wants to be a HC, and his defense at Miami this year was championship-caliber but was let down by the offense.

Not at all upset. Don Brown could never win the BIG games or figure out Ohio State. Lets go hire an elite D coordinator.........
December 12th, 2018 at 11:21 AM ^
Who’s more elite than Don Brown??? Please, give us a name...
December 12th, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
Lets hire the D coordinator from Purdue or Iowa. At least they could have a solid game plan against OSU.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:30 AM ^
yea... but what about the other non-OSU games?
December 12th, 2018 at 11:52 AM ^
Like Penn State last year? Or South Carolina with a month to prepare. His defense overwhelms inferior QBs. Anyone with a competent Qb shreds it.
Edit:
Thought you were replying to me. My bad.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:34 AM ^
I think it's more about OSU's DC Schiano not having a plan in both of those games. OSU got behind by such a large margin in both games that they couldn't run their normal offense. It happens.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:36 AM ^
FWIW, Michigan's defense was ranked #1...clown
December 12th, 2018 at 12:46 PM ^
And who won the Big Ten? Who are we playing in the CFP first round? The ratings don't mean shit......
December 12th, 2018 at 11:29 AM ^
Every other DC in UM history that didn't give up 62 points to OSU with All Americans at every level. Dave Aranda, Todd Orlando.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:32 AM ^
THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^. Don Brown is a good coach, not a great coach. Anyone that plays man coverage against OSU's receivers should have there head examined......
December 12th, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
Exactly. So many people are blinded by stats, they fail to see the obvious shortcomings. Who knew crossing routes from osu would work. I thought rutger succeeded with them just because they are so good and talented.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:31 PM ^
Aranda?? Didn't he lose to OSU 59-0 in the B1G championship?
December 12th, 2018 at 12:53 PM ^
Brent Venables.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:18 AM ^
Sounds like part of the OSU Gleichschaltung to me. The propaganda arm is strong in Columbus.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
At least 5 Michigan coaches are garnering interest from other programs. Brown, Zordich, Hamilton, Warinner, and Moore.
Some Analysts look to move this time of year too.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:27 AM ^
Impossible. I don't believe you. How could "totally qualified for a top job and not at all a nepotism hire" Jay Harbaugh not be on that list?
I assume Moore is waiting to take over the DL from Mattison? Hopefully that, and a raise, keeps him here. On the other hand, he's a Don Brown guy so if Brown goes probably Moore does too.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:37 AM ^
Let it go. Jay may have been a nepotism hire at Michigan, but he has done a hell of a job with it. His position groups have never been weakness and I would argue are even the top 3 strengths of the team. I’m interested to see what happens now that Higdon is gone and if Michigan can maintain a decent ground game.
Also Moore is a TE coach. Maybe you mean Washington who is currently coaching LBs but used to coach DL?
If Brown does leave, It would be good to give Partridge a shot and promote Devin Bush Sr to safety coach. I am also interested in Mike Elston who is NDs Dline coach and was passed for someone else last year for DC. He’s a former Michigan player so he would make a great fit in Ann Arbor.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:43 AM ^
Indeed, you're correct. I meant Washington.
I'm glad that Jay has been good in the jobs that he's been given (not earned) and he's a decent recruiter. However, look at his two groups - they're the two most helped by Harbaugh's system. Also, when he took over the RB's their blocking ability dropped pretty dramatically.
The fact remains though if Jay was a qualified well-respected position coach, he'd be getting a sniff by teams not run by someone in his family.
Michigan isn't in a position to have anyone on staff unless they're the absolute best that we can get. Is that Jay? I don't think so.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:19 PM ^
so you are the final word on whether Jay was given his jobs and that he did nothing to earn them? Got ya. WTF That is one dumb ass statement.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:25 PM ^
Sorry Jay.
GA
QC on Uncle's NFL staff
Position Coach on Dad's Michigan staff
You were totally qualified for that GA spot!
December 12th, 2018 at 1:20 PM ^
Nepotism hire...
He was an NFL QC coach for 3 years (including a Super Bowl win) and came here to coach the tight ends and assist with special teams. His position group was extremely productive.
He then moved on to being the running backs coach, helping produce our first 1,000 yard back since Fitz Toussaint. Higdon finished top 10 nationally and 2nd in the conference in yards per game. Again, extremely productive.
All the while being a top recruiter on the staff.
If his last name were anything other than Harbaugh, you’d be lauding what a positive and productive hire he has turned out to be. Cut the shit. Jay has been fine in his position.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:44 AM ^
Interesting to see Moore and Zordich on that list. Because Zordich is kind of a gruff, old school guy and hiring that kind of guy doesn't seem to be the trend these days. On the other end of the spectrum is Moore who Harbaugh identified as an up and comer because of his personality and recruiting acumen. And both of those guys would presumably be coordinators. Meanwhile Pep and Brown going for HC jobs.
Hiring great assistants is a double edged sword cause you lose them so often.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
Zordich is an NFL guy. He's probably getting interested in the pros (as in the past).
December 12th, 2018 at 11:44 AM ^
Whether people like to admit it or not, Harbaugh’s assistants are really damn good. It’s not a suprise to me these guys are getting looks at different programs for better jobs. We are gonna have lots of coordinator and position coach turnover year-to-year. That’s what happens even at pretty good programs. Bama deals with it, Ohio St loses coaches every year, Oklahoma, Georgia just lost their DC. The only one I think that absolutely they need to retain is Warinner. Do everything you can to retain him until a program offers him something U of M just can’t match.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:49 AM ^
Warinner could be a huge loss. Michigan should make him the highest paid OL coach in the country if that's what it takes to keep him.
December 12th, 2018 at 1:56 PM ^
I will absolutely lose my shit if Brown, Zordich, or Warinner leave. Those guys are as good as anyone in the game at their respective positions.
December 12th, 2018 at 9:30 PM ^
I'm surprised I haven't heard pep's name at all in the Tennessee OC job. Would have made a lot of sense out of the Harrison Bailey commitment
December 12th, 2018 at 11:25 AM ^

December 12th, 2018 at 11:28 AM ^
Ploy for more money? Or what? Who leaves the amount of money he makes as a DC to head coach at Temple? TEMPLE!?
December 12th, 2018 at 11:28 AM ^
Don, Please don't go.....
don't go.....
Don't go away.
Please don't go,
don't go,
we're begging you to stay.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:28 AM ^
I have a friend at Temple. He tells me that Don is high on the list but they are unsure if he can be had. That is, they think UM will do whatever they can to keep him.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
Hope so, sounds plausible.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:31 AM ^
So potentially going into '19 without Hamilton & Brown.
December 12th, 2018 at 11:45 AM ^
Was he interviewing the week before Thanksgiving?
December 12th, 2018 at 12:56 PM ^
Very underrated comment!
December 12th, 2018 at 11:48 AM ^
I thought the narrative was Don Brown had no interest in being an HC and was happy in Ann Arbor?
December 12th, 2018 at 11:58 AM ^
Need a money cannon. That said, it really seems like Don likes how much of a difference he can make for the guys here.
I have no doubt he would excel anywhere, but Michigan seems to attract the kind of Dude he can mold into something special. That benefit goes both ways, so Michigan should be comfortable showing it's appreciation.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:02 PM ^
if Don Brown leaves I believe it will have a greater impact on Michigan than Urban leaving will on OSU. The gap will just keep on growing...
I'm very interested to see what comes of this. This team needs continuity (except perhaps for Pep), and this year if feels like we have the staff in place to provide that but if Don leaves... it may open up the floodgates on the defensive staff - CP, coach Z, Greg Mattison?
December 12th, 2018 at 12:13 PM ^
Where will we ever find a guy to give up 62 to the buckeyes?
December 12th, 2018 at 12:39 PM ^
Sure, I’m not happy about that debacle either. Throw in Notte dame and PSU last year. Here’s the thing tho, without Don Brown, do we win at Northwestern, vs Wisconsin, heck even at MSU this year? His defenses shut most teams down, particularly in second half of games. Heck, even the second half at ND, we had a chance to win the game because of the defense. So to simply put it on OSU’s debacle doesn’t tell the whole picture. I believe we are a 2-3 loss team heading into Columbus this year without Don Brown. But that’s just my opinion
December 12th, 2018 at 12:57 PM ^
We lost to ND b/c our offense was total ass.
December 12th, 2018 at 1:14 PM ^
For the love of g-d, DON BROWN DID NOT GIVE UP 62 POINTS TO OSU. Will people please stop saying it already? Unless of course you want to immediately show your idiocy, in which case, please keep throwing out that fake statistic.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:52 PM ^
Because Don Brown is the only good DC in the country and Harbaugh has shown no aptitude for selecting good DCs.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:02 PM ^
Harbaugh threw a lot of late season praise Don Brown's way in the same way he did for Durkin. Brown leaving might have some legs and that would suck hard.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:17 PM ^
Read the Tea Leaves........John Harbaugh coming in as DC
/ s
December 12th, 2018 at 12:18 PM ^
I don't believe I will be upset if he leaves. Harbaugh will find somebody else, and although he is a phenomenal coach, we still seem to get torched against the quality opponents and Ohio state for that matter. How unprepared we were for that game on defense is still astonishing to me.
December 12th, 2018 at 12:21 PM ^
Our defense also torched some quality opponents during Brown's tenure. Therefore, I'm not ready to kick one of the best DC's in college football to the curb based on two (2) games against elite passing attacks ('17 Penn St; '18 OSU).
December 12th, 2018 at 12:36 PM ^
Durkin had some great defensive performances too. Don't act like you knew who Don Brown was before he was Michigan's DC. Harbaugh could have another great coach in mind already.
Hiring defensive talent, weirdly enough, is where Harbaugh has most clearly earned a "he's got it covered" since coming here.
