Domani Jackson buyer's remorse?

Submitted by gustave ferbert on January 11th, 2024 at 10:39 AM

With Saban retiring is it possible for Domani Jackson to reconsider his commitment?

I saw a recruit has already decommitted this morning.

A small item - I believe the recruit you're referring to is the #9 ranked prospect in the '24 class.   The key with that prospect is - he did not sign in December - so, he's not a formally committed / signed player - he's a verbal commit who intended to sign in February.

P.S. (Added) - the #9 prospect is the #3 WR in the '24 class - Ryan Williams.   He appears to be considering Texas, Texas A&M, and Auburn.

Yes, I believe 247 had an article that said all Bama commits have 30 days to back out of their commitment because the head coach left. So their entire '24/transfer class could potentially be up for grabs. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for a single one of them to choose Michigan. And really, it would be foolish for anyone to choose M until our staff is settled. In the next month, we could get confirmation that Jim and everyone will be back. Or, they could scatter to the 4 winds.

A question, if I may.   It seems like the rule / policy is clear for (in this case) Alabama players.  Since Saban, their head coach, is leaving - they have 30 days to enter the portal and transfer.

What happens if the Coach of Team "B" takes over as head coach of Bama?    Do the players on Team "B" also have the option to enter the portal and transfer within 30 days?

Harbaugh needs to sign quickly and re-up Minter (or promote Clink if Minter leaves) before we're going to get many transfers.

I looked through Alabama's roster for the last few years and I don't recognize most of the names from Michigan recruiting despite the crazy high rankings.  Not sure what relationships we have or could make with them.  Though they did see how good Michigan is up close.

One of the things working against Michigan is some of the coaches are not just college candidates but NFL candidates. That's awesome, but it does mean potentially longer timelines than college programs primarily looking at college coaches.

There will likely be a lot of movement and musical chairs at the college level before we know all of the people Michigan may lose.

This is 4 years running where Michigan has been on the outside looking in during the mad scramble for recruiting transfers. It would sure be nice to have some coaching certainty at the end of the season. I mean, I wouldn't trade the National Championship for it, but if we're making a wishlist...

I'd focus on secondary effect, esp since it looks like Lanning is going to take the 'Bama job.  There is plenty of talent at Oregon, and while Lanning will surely get some of it, I bet there will be some good players looking to go to Not Alabama.  I think most of the 'Bama kids will be looking for a big bag elsewhere, and I'm betting those bags are already in Tuscaloosa.

"I'm betting those bags are already in Tuscaloosa."

My feeling is those bags - which were colored brown until NIL became a reality - were in Tuscaloosa for a very long time - and, in fact - the crimson & cream team perfected the brown bagging technique - which was one reason Texas A&M signed the class they did a couple of years ago.   Which - by the way - Saban was very critical of.

It's definitely possible imo. On this topic, OSU Twitter personalities and media members are openly advocating for and reporting that OSU is tampering with Bama players

Saban retiring and their DC leaving.  I'm sure whoever the new HC is might be replacing the OC as well...

Best of luck to everyone.

Also, Domani can still change because the portal will remain open an additional 30 days for Bama.

Yes, based on what I read their commits and transfers can backout within 30 days without penalty. So Bama will likely need to move quickly in order to keep their players together. My mind immediately went to Domani as well when I saw the Saban news.

"He hates the cold."   This perspective has always caught my eye - because of where NFL teams play.

I mean, think of the venues - New England, New York, Chicago, Green Bay, Kansas City, and Denver.   Those are just a few NFL cities where open air stadiums can have an impact during playoff season.   It's a good thing that those cities never get cold in the winter.

The ways coaching transitions usually go, in terms of player transfers:

  1. Coach leaves
  2. Lots of grumbling from the roster and mass transfer rumors
  3. New guy hired
  4. New guy reassures the roster and almost everyone recommits

Some exceptions of course, but I've mostly stopped believing there's going to be a mass player exodus in all but the most extreme coaching changes.

Man we're obsessed over this guy...I don't really get why. We will need to hit the portal hard but it'll be tough until Harbaugh signs or leaves. Decision has to be made bougie anyone will likely commit

Not directed at OP, but some of the comments, SMH.....

No, we're not gonna bag up front, but we still have the best team -- and probably the best team culture -- in the country. We also have the hardware.

Please, for the love of God, let's appreciate doing what we do our way, enjoy this a bit, and see where players land. I, for one, am putting faith in this staff to get the right players.**

**This assumes that said staff stays reasonably together. Their way works.

If he was smart he would, but he also wouldn't have committed to a Lincoln Riley defense in the first place if he was smart.

(I'm trash talking, I'm sure he's a bright young man, just has terrible decision making when it comes to colleges)
