[Dellenger] NCAA says Ohio State's Ryan Day has no known ties to Michigan sign-stealing probe
The NCAA notified the Big Ten on Monday that there are no known connections between Ohio State head coach Ryan Day or his family and the conference's investigation into Michigan, senior officials at both the association and conference.
Glad there was enough public pressure to force the NCAA to report on this aspect. Still very curious where this PI firm hire originated.

If all they did was say “hey watch out for UofM’s sign stealer guy” I don’t think so. If they actually shared data on Michigan, absolutely.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:01 PM ^
Sorry, but MSU has proven completely unable to manage any kind of modern, effective PR for the last two decades, at least. They didn't suddenly just get capable of it.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:24 PM ^
I mean…. *gestures at everything going on today*
The initial leaks and the whining from the AD are their “July Drive”.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:49 PM ^
But, they do know where Hitler was born.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:25 PM ^
I doubt it is Sparty but how lucky is Sparty that Signgate popped up out of nowhere?
Instead of having people give them grief over Tuck and their horrible season, they're dodging all that and get to pile on Michigan all day long. Once again big bro (not intentionally) is providing cover for the dumb shit little bro.

Fake news
November 6th, 2023 at 7:28 PM ^
Key word “known”. Leaves open the possibility.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:31 PM ^
Why the hell are they exonerating Ryan Day before they exonerate Harbaugh?
what a trash fire of a conference.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:38 PM ^
It’s a fair point. Sure didn’t have a problem blasting Harbaugh and Michigan for 3 weeks, but the PI stuff really catches steam late last week and they get Day cleared over the weekend? Weird.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:02 PM ^
Ehr...it is the NCAA, not B1G....you meant to say "Trash League." ;)
November 6th, 2023 at 7:34 PM ^
"known"
November 6th, 2023 at 7:36 PM ^
I'm sure a PI firm just took it upon themselves and used their unlimited resources to cost themselves tens of thousands of dollars and manpower to just investigate for fun.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:41 PM ^
There was that theory/rumor a few days back that the PI firm was investigating something else entirely, and stumbled upon the Stalions's scheme. Mostly because apparently Michigan knows exactly which PI firm is it, and are familiar with them.
IIRC, "TattooGate" was a result of a larger investigation by the DEA/FBI into a drug dealer, and an independent contractor in the investigation stumbled upon the emails about exchanging memorabilia and forwarded the emails to other people. Memory is a bit fuzzy, but I remember being very amused by that detail.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:54 PM ^
My memory's fuzzy too. Wasn't the drug dealer also the team tattoo artist? Or did he just hang out with the players at the parlor?
November 6th, 2023 at 8:04 PM ^
Unlikely. I'm sure nobody in the non-college coaching world would know advanced scouting is a rule violation. My first reaction to this was, "really, that's against the rules? Huh."
November 6th, 2023 at 8:11 PM ^
After the Houston Astros's highly publicized "SignGate," it probably wouldn't have been that hard to put together that an incidental finding like that would be pretty "juicy" and worth turning over.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:24 PM ^
I guess. But the Astros were actively using technology and communicating the intel obtained during the game from a camera in the stands. It's not illegal in baseball to review/scout prior games and steal the signs from those. It's also not illegal to steal signs during a game in baseball, it just matters how you do it. A baserunner can steal signs and signal to the batter the pitch.
My point is, if this were professional baseball (or any other professional sport), this action is legal, and therefor its unlikely that someone would have recognized it as illegal unless they already knew the rule for some reason, or were actively looking for Michigan NCAA violations.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:44 PM ^
I wouldn't put that much trust in a "whistle-blower" put much more thought than, "Hey, this folder of videos with sideline signs from B1G teams seems pretty suspiciously close to what the Astros's were accused of... maybe it is worth forwarding to someone?"

Initially law enforcement DID contact OSU about all the memorabilia at at the tat shop, that's when the story first broke. Everybody seems to get a couple things confused about the "Tatgate" story though. It wasn't the players getting tats that got got OSU sanctioned and cost Tressel his job. The story broke after the end of the 2010 season. OSU self reported it, and the NCAA issued the 5 game suspensions to the players involved. The players received the same suspensions that players at other schools got from similar violations ( see Todd Gurley at Georgia)
The following Spring, the emails were discovered that showed Tressel had been warned in the summer of 2010 by Columbus attorney Chris Cicero about what the players did. Tressel sat on it and did nothing. He then lied to the NCAA on the routine compliance paperwork saying he had no knowledge of any violations or eligibility issues. Once that came to light, the NCAA opened a new investigation, Tressel was gone and the sanctions were handed down after the 2011 season, after Meyer had already been hired.

Well that investigation no one knew about concluded suspiciously fast
November 6th, 2023 at 7:37 PM ^
I mean, nobody expected Day to be dumb enough to hire his family's firm but it's still funny that Day thought it smart to pick one of the few PI firms in the same small state his brother works as a PI in.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:39 PM ^
They asked Ryan, he said "no...but we are tough!"... case closed.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:44 PM ^
No ‘known’ ties
November 6th, 2023 at 7:44 PM ^
For what it’s worth, some folks I know in Ohio say what they hear is the investigation started following Weiss computer
November 6th, 2023 at 8:04 PM ^
How would they know that?
November 6th, 2023 at 8:11 PM ^
Also why would it start from that? Imagine you're the FBI or the police and you come across a staffer's computer drive that had film of opponent sidelines. How would you know this is against NCAA rules? Nobody outside of college coaches and the NCAA itself had ever heard of this before. They would see this and say, "normal coaching material", most likely.
Alternatively, if this was somehow related to Weiss (which I think we can definitely say it is not) why not approach Stallions with some plea deal to get him to provide information for you?
They're almost certainly separate issues.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:23 PM ^
That is an OSU message board rumor.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:37 PM ^
Exactly. That’s what they’re passing through to push the “this isn’t connected to OSU” message.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:42 PM ^
I live in Ohio these simpletons jump if Zach Smith says so.. he stirs the pot feeds them the bs info, and also said DB would be starting qb for the sucknuts instead it’s a Honda McCord. He said it it must be true that’s how most assnut fans are around here.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:45 PM ^
Let me guess, the B1G thinks this is true, but the no connection to Harbaugh and Stalions, that part is bullshit.
Got it, got it.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:46 PM ^
And the CONFERENCE’s investigation. I.e. the Day PI firm did the dirty work and leaked everything and now the conference is doing their own independent investigation.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:51 PM ^
OK, I'm a little confused here. There are no known connections between the Days and the conference's investigation?
I wasn't aware the conference had carried out any part of this investigation. Somebody's dropping documents to ESPN and the WaPo etc., and somebody's dropping documents at the NCAA. The conference hasn't done squat except read the NCAA's reports as far as I know.
And I'd think if there really was such a thing as the conference's investigation they'd know who was involved and wouldn't need the NCAA to tell them.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:52 PM ^
....yet.
November 6th, 2023 at 7:56 PM ^
No known ties isn’t no ties.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:02 PM ^
The NCAA lacks the authority, prowess, and will to investigate anything. Every NCAA "investigation" has merely been a review of investigations conducted by journalists, law enforcement, or shady PI firms with ties to Ryan Day.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:16 PM ^
Why would the ncaa comment on this? If this doesn’t involve Ryan day at all?? Hmmmmm…. More false reporting??? I think the ncaa is looking 😂😂😂😂… anyways enjoy the ride and buckle up cause a storm is coming.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
I think the NCAA is trying to clean up the mess the B1G made, which is certainly saying something.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:29 PM ^
Almost feels like they are signaling to the B1G "We have the information and jurisdiction, let us handle the punishment".
November 6th, 2023 at 11:13 PM ^
I wonder the same thing: Why would the NCAA feel compelled to “clear” Day when nobody had publicly accused him of anything? They would not. Why not clear Greg Schiano and Ryan Walters while you’re at it?
November 6th, 2023 at 8:18 PM ^
Agreed....I don't believe it...not sure the NCAA is a trustworthy organization at this point
November 6th, 2023 at 8:20 PM ^
Well I don't know why they didn't suspend him last week. Someone said sometime so they should have just reacted
November 6th, 2023 at 8:28 PM ^
Has anyone heard anything about an investigation being opened into the video that was shot from the Ohio State sideline of Connor Stallions talking to Jesse Minter? I feel like that video shows a direct violation of Rule 1-11 ("Prohibited Field Equipment") which Seth had noted is the rule Michigan is incorrectly being accused of breaking.
November 6th, 2023 at 8:54 PM ^
The video came from ABC 6 in Columbus. I think it’s safe to assume they had media credentials.
November 6th, 2023 at 9:44 PM ^
Yup! Commercial broadcast relevision affiliates tend to have those. Safe to say I missed the watermark in the original embedded video I saw. Thanks!
November 6th, 2023 at 9:53 PM ^
Just remember. It's only Monday. And everything we've learned today is just the tip of the iceberg.
That is all.
November 6th, 2023 at 9:59 PM ^
So the NCAA’s “investigation” into OSU having a connection didn’t amount to any proof. No worries, because Michigan could hire its own PI firm to really investigate the matter. And then leak it all themselves, and at their own pace
November 6th, 2023 at 10:17 PM ^
OK. Now this R3B Charmin-Day guy seems suspicious.
November 6th, 2023 at 10:55 PM ^
But . . . but . . . but . . . we are suspicious of Day. It does not matter that the NCAA said there is no known connection. This is too important to take any chances. The very soul of the game is at stake. He needs to be suspended indefinitely RIGHT NOW!!
Am I doing it right?

If you believe that I have some asteroid insurance that I'd love to sell to you.
