He was slotted as a true Safety at GA but has barely played and their fans said he had checked out by the end of the season.  Apparently coaches he was a 1/2 step slow to play Safety and a bit too slight to play LB in GA’s system.

If only he had the opportunity to play in a Defensive system and position that could have solved that dilemma...

No mention of Michigan as a possibility - Tennessee and Florida are the early transfer favorites.

Georgia has invested heavily in recruiting (i.e. bagmen and the such) pulling in top 5 classes year after year.  They have as many 5 stars as OSU and Alabama (and more than Clemson or LSU).

Add that to a crappy SEC East and they win 10-11 games a year based on overwhelming talent; but I just don’t think Kirby Smart and his staff are very smart or good coaches.  Their defense is like Michigan (shut down mediocre and bad teams but give up points to good teams) and their offense is just atrocious despite superior athletes.

Turns out that all good defenses shut down mediocre and bad teams but give up points to good teams. Georgia gave up more than 20 points just once this season, but it was 37 points to LSU. That's probably more a reflection of LSU than Georgia. If Georgia's defense is like Michigan's, that's a high compliment to Don Brown.

Their offense, however, is familiar to us: More traditional, run-oriented scheme. Lots of talent. Ultra-frustrating in its mediocrity.

Georgia gave up only 20 points to South Carolina, but lost. They held Texas A&M to 13 points and won by 6.

A couple of years ago when Georgia made the playoff I even felt a twinge of envy for how their offense seemed to succeed despite a traditional scheme, a run emphasis, and a freshman QB (this was 2017, so we knew what it meant to have a limited QB). They lost Chubb and Michel, though, and their offense has only gotten worse even as Harbaugh has actually made some significant changes.

That this happens with talent that appears considerably better than ours borders on criminal, and does indeed call the on-field coaching acumen of Smart and his staff into question. Georgia got half of what it wanted in Smart--a man who would use every recruiting advantage they could produce. But it turns out they've still got a guy who underuses talent, just like Mark Richt. There's just more talent to underuse.

I apologize to thread jack OP, when talking about the Portal..I know there was talk about Stanford's QB coming here, and some wanting that to be looked into. However, I want to see a Harbaugh QB through and through. This is what we have truly yet to see, and if we do, we will finally know how we feel about that position with Harbaugh. Once again OP, my apologies.

If they were talking to him, then they are not completely happy with what they have now. Lots of people wanted OKorn to play. And he didn't get in for a while. But by injury he did finally play, and we saw why Coach Harbaugh wasn't playing him. We may find out why he was talking to Costello. And when we see Costello play, maybe at LSU, or wherever, we may see why then too.

I agree. If a QB with any starting potential at all transfers here, DCaff bolts, and Milton might, too.

I have not heard any actually sourced claim that Michigan has talked to Costello. This is all, as far as I can tell, pure speculation.

I do have confidence that Harbaugh will do what he thinks is best for the team. People who assert that Harbaugh actually plays QBs that are worse than the QBs on the bench are so absurd as to discredit the person who makes such a claim. He wants to win. If anything, his willingness and desire to do such things inadvertently harms his relationship with other players; I suspect a lot of guys feel a bit raw with how Harbaugh does stuff without really considering how it affects other people.

So if he thought Costello would be an improvement at QB, he could go after him--and might wind up being completely surprised at how people respond.

Now, I've been critical of Harbaugh as a QB coach. If he brings a transfer like Costello in, that tells me that he has failed to develop DCaff and Milton. Pile on Peters with that and that would be three QBs, in this hypothetical scenario, that Harbaugh recruited and failed to develop into competent D-1 QBs. That would be on him.

But Harbaugh has proven that he is willing to assess the position of his program and make changes. He fired his friend Drevno (albeit a year or two late, but he still did it). He found the best DC available in Don Brown. He defenestrated Pep and gave up the reins on the offense this year, and even (against our expectation) basically stuck with that commitment when things were tough.

I'm saying all that to say this: if Harbaugh really does fail at developing QBs as I think he does, I wouldn't be surprised to see him hire a guy to work with QBs and step away from that. I'm not sure he would, but he has surprised me before.

THIS!!! Plus- everyone assumes the kid that played last year will be the same kid that plays next year, ignoring the year of development they will have come next Sept.  QB is hard and takes time to develop.  Another year in the system and Dylan could be lights out.  I say dance with who you brought, and let Dylan Joe duke it out.

It seems like Harbaugh has taken a step back with regard to his involvement with QB coaching and has gone to a CEO role since after the 2016 season. When Pep Hamilton was here, he over-saw the QB’s and the receivers has a GA in 2017. Then McElwain was brought in 2018 to coach receivers.

This yr with Pep out, Gattis takes the duel role of receiver coach/OC and McDaniels takes the QB’s.

It is hard to tell how involved Harbaugh is with coaching QB’s day to day. Maybe the problem is Harbaugh isn’t involved enough. Combine that with high coaching turnover and it’s easy to see how the development suffers.

Shoulda stuck wirh his initial decision but alas, he didnt. He would have been perfect at viper with his size.

Now it's gonna be an uphill struggle to make something of his career.

These young men make mistakes like we all do. It’s got be very difficult to stay grounded with a million people in your ear all telling you a million different things.  It is difficult to be too hard on the player.  I know I had a lot to learn at eighteen, even though I was completely anonymous.

We can all benefit from the knowledge that all that glitters is not gold.

Would take a major swallow if his pride to come back to Michigan after flipping on the very last day. I hope he’d give is a look, though.

I know  he technically flipped on the last day but that guy was long gone by NSD.  He was taking unofficials to Georgia practically weekly the whole season and the coach on his staff with a connection to Michigan had left between his junior and senior year.  Sam documented this one pretty well and even with his never ending general optimism you could tell he was saying Otis wouldn't end up in the class.
