Darnay Holmes' ballz shifting to OSU

Submitted by llandson on

Multiple crystal ballz in the past day, including Wiltfong, have Darnay Holmes going to OSU.

It is sickening that the referees' impact on the outcome of The Game has repercussions long beyond just this season. I doubt OSU would have the momentum it does with all of these out-of-state 5-stars if it was UM in the CFP and OSU in the Orange Bowl.

This is why it drives me fucking nuts when M fans root for OSU in the playoff/bowl games to support the BIG. Thier success is detrimental to us. OSU is our biggest rival and biggest competitor in recruiting. This includes OH and MI and also nationwide, with kids like Holmes. Their recruiting success necessarily affects ours and vice versa. Rant over, sorry.

though this is an endless debate that we will never resolve. The better our conference is perceived nationally, the better off M is. That's a fact most recently demonstrated this very year. One reason we could lose to Iowa and stay exactly the same in the rankings the next week was because our conference was perceived to be the best in the country.

Opposing point of view:  Until the CFP goes to 8 teams, we will always need the Big Ten to have a very strong national reputation.  This obviously includes OSU and the rest of the Big Ten East.

We didn't get shut out of the CFP becasue we lost to Ohio State.  We got shut out because we lost to Iowa.

Playing a highly-regarded OSU as close as we did, even though we lost, would have been enough to get us in.

I realize that most folks have their minds made up, but I'll give it a shot at arguing the other side.

First, my POV - I moved to Ann Arbor when I was nine and attended my first college football game in seeing Ricky Leach and the boys destroy Wisconsin 56-0. Harlem Huckleby was hurt that day, but it didn't matter. Michigan was ranked #1 in the nation after that game, but was shut out by Minnesota on the road the next week. I've been to a bunch of games and watched or listened to (when I was doing my paper route or collecting tailgate cans at the golf course) every game since.

So if I'm not a Michigan fan, I'm impersonating one pretty well.

My take: When a Big 10 team goes up against the SEC (esp), or any rival conference, I root for them. I'm not saying I suddenly love OSU or MSU, that's crazy. But I still want them to win.

Why?: For the honor of the Big 10, that's why! To put it in more mgobloggish terms: The more successful the Big 10 is in interconference play, especially extremely high profile interconference play, the more it means when Michigan beats Big 10 teams! If the Big 10 dominates other conferences, Michigan's success means more, and there is less chance that the discussion nationally will denigrate our accomplishments when trying to get into the playoff.

This is true in the regular season (last year, NW beats Stanford, this year, Wisc beats LSU) at the beginning of the year, and true in the bowls, and super true in the playoffs. MSU getting their butts utterly kicked by Bama last year did us no favors. Do I enjoy the pain and suffering of Spartan fans? Well of course, I'm a Michigan guy. But I'd still rather have them beat Alabama, so when we play them this year, and whack 'em, people understand how good a team we have.

So that's my approach. I think I'm a true Michigan fan. But yeah, I'm hoping OSU beats Clemson and at least makes it a game against Alabama. Perhaps "roots" is a strong word for my emotion at that point - I coldbloodedly want them to win for the greater glory of Michigan and the Big 10.

That mistype is what you take away? Please say I didn't..what? Make a mistake? Sorry, can't say that. It was a mistake. It's just a mistype dude. Not sure how that manages to be such a big deal for you, but whatever.

Naw, Michigan can make it's own noise without having to drag on OSU's tailcoats.

Hell, when they won the national title, it didn't make the Big Ten look good, it made Ohio State look good, end of story.  Rooting for your conference above other considerations is the reason everyone hates the SEC mouthbreathers, don't fall into that trap.  Root against OSU at all times and keep your soul clean.

I doubt the Game had a great deal of recruiting influence for either side. If anything I think it may have helped us as it showed people naionally that we're the real deal. I doubt OSUs perception was altered much nationally by that game

Its not about people watching the game, its about who was there in a supposedly absurd enviroment with Lebron dancing on the sidelines.

Baron Browning, 5* Bama lean before the game, OSU commit after

Jeffrey Okudah, 5* DB, 93% of ballz to OSU

Marvin Wilson, 5* 7 of last 9 ballz to osu after texas was leader

Darnay Holmes, see this thread

You noticing a trend yet?  There were multiple 5 star kids at that game who had other leaders or open commits prior to their visits and now are trending towards osu.  It had a big impact and it was bad and it sucks.

who says the outcome of the game had an effect on where Baron Browning (for example) was going to go though? Whether they won or lost, the atmosphere was terrific, OSU is a great program and it's a good school. The outcome of the game likely had little impact on each of those guys

Have you ever been to after parties when your team lost? All you remember is throwing up the next morning and feeling regret.

Partying after you win results in a similar lack of memories, but you're still left with a sense of joy and happiness the next day/week/etc.

to walk away from those TX kids (Okudah, Wilson, Browning, etc.) - even with his OSU history - until the LOIs are in the fax machine.

Any guy that can get 5* kids to come to Houston is going to try to take back all those kids that didn't give Strong a look.

Just so he stays away from Filiaga.

You really overemphasize 1 win.  OSU has been winning and winning big for years.  They have something like 5 losses in the Meyer era.  If it was 6 by 2 points to Michigan they are not going to be losing these recruits if the recruits were headed there anyway or leaning heavily.

Look at all these high level kids we are about to get this week.  Are they NOT ocming here because we lost that game.  Chill man.  OSU is going to recruit extremely high; they deserve to - they have the 2nd best program in the country the past half decade and now Urban is recruiting like that.  UM beating them by 3 would not be changing it.  These kids who are 18 now have only seen OSU success save for 1 Fickell yr in their lifetime.

We had em beat this year in CBus and shot ourselves in the foot / got a screw job from OSU homer refs.

Unless they change to a pro-style offense, we will have the talent and scheme on defense every year to shut down that offense, regardless of athletes. You can't arm punt a Don Brown defense with NFL talent down the field (as we saw this year), so all that talent will go to waste on the offensive side of the ball against a real opponent while they light up Rutgers and Maryland for 60+ a game.

Their defense will be nasty and we will need an elite O-line to compete.  Our QB development will far exceed anything they do.

In summary, Harbaugh with a top 5 classe is better than Urban with the top class so long as they run the gimmick RPO offense, and we have a healthy QB in the game.

See Saban, Nick for precedent.

That said, Alabama will be a much bigger pain in the ass for us if/when we meet them in the playoff, as they will be running the same system we do with better talent and depth.

Word. I didn't read his comment, just responded to the OSU guy talking about how awesome CUM is. I wonder how a Michigan poster going to an OSU site talking about how awesome Harbaugh is would go, and whether OSU posters would defend the Michigan guy like you are here?

The guy Urban ran away from in the SEC.  Cardale Jones (pocket passer) caught fire and OSU ran all over them that one year, which is why they should change their offensive system if they don't want to get exposed by NFL level defenses.  Healthy Barret arm punting down the field that year and you dont beat Bama.

Sorry, your coach is a front runner, always has been.  He will scamper away when times get hard, which they will.  Heart problems, more time with family, etc.  Total snake, total used car salesman, enabled a murderer, cheated with coeds, etc.

Unfortunately he has used up the "heart problems" and "mental health" excuses already, so what will be the next excuse when faced with adversity?  Aaron Hernandez made me do it?

I'm just saying that the argument that Urban Meyer is somehow too afraid to face a coach he has beaten twice is weak.

They are both multi-National Championship winning HC that split 7 of the last 10 National Championships between the 2 of them. If Saban has such a great grasp of Urban's offense, then why did he feel compelled to bring Urban's former OC as a consultant right after losing? For giggles?

Our coach beat the mighty Pete Carroll with 2 and 3 star recruits.  We are about to sign one of our best classes ever.  This week is going to be glorious and you defeatists are worried about their potential recruits.  That's kind of weak.  Not just in college football, but in life.  Buck the f#$% up.

Harbaugh has proven that he can beat a superiority talented pro style team (USC)

However, a marginally talented spread team (Oregon) crushed his Stanford teams consistently.

I think parity with OSU is doable but let's not take the USC comparison as gospel.
