Corum is having knee surgery

Submitted by matt1114 on December 1st, 2022 at 2:27 PM

Sources: #Michigan star RB Blake Corum is expected to have knee surgery and is out for the season. The Heisman candidate should make a full recovery. He tried to play last week vs. Ohio State but his knee made it impossible.

Anyone else have any bad news that they wanna share today?!?!

Well Edwards, its your time now. If there is a silver lining to all of this, its that we found out first hand that this team can win big games, on the road, without Corum in the lineup. This team is not a one trick pony. But still, not having one of the best players in America on the field is going to hurt, no matter how the rest of the season goes.

I'd like to add a bit of an anecdotal/related story for those who are assuming there was some malpractice by the staff here because Corum tried to give it a go twice.

I injured my hand somewhat severely last year - not too many detailed but the result was a 2.5-inch cut basically from my palm to between my index and middle fingers.  It was pretty gnarly and required a dozen stitches but didn't lose any fine motor control.  Doctor said a week later that the wound was healing but there was significant scar tissue and I could either slowly work it out with rehab or opt for surgical removal that would clear it up quicker/better but would immobilize my hand for longer.  I opted for long-term rehab without surgery and ti got back to where it was before the injury but took 6-7 months.  That was a trade-off worth it to me because I'm not a professional athlete and not being able to use a hand for another 2-3 weeks wasn't optimal.

It sucks that he got hurt but I'm happy he still got to be part of a championship team and I'm sure he'll cheer on everyone.  Hopefully he'll be healthy for the draft.

This is just to throw off Purdue right or is having surgery after Michigan wins the  national championship because he’s going to play right, haha right? RIGHT!?

Welp. So much for winning a CFP game. I am sure no one on Purdue or TCU will attack the ball on a one handed RB. CJ your time has come and the moment is not too big for you. Your Paveasaurs await.

The only team we could still possible play with the defensive and overall talent as OSU is Georgia. Purdue, USC, and TCU (who has a solid defense) are all massive steps down in competition. Granted, this is not good news and I feel terrible for Corum who deserves a legendary sendoff to match his career. But we have JJ, Edwards, WR and TE talent everywhere, amazing special teams, and a dominant defense. 2014 OSU survived an injury like this to win a natty; why can't we?

I’m not surprised by this. There are plenty of injuries that fall in the, “you can either have surgery or you can wait it out and see how it goes” bucket. I had a partial MCL tear that fell into this bucket. I chose to just live with it and it’s been fine. He’s likely making the right business decision based on the lack of progress over the past week and the difficulty/pain he had in his few plays on Saturday. Good luck to him and thank you for being such an awesome representative of UM on and off the field.

Question, especially for former football players on any level: is a helmet to the knee considered a random risk of the game or a borderline or dirty play. Grant Newsome’s career was ended by a Wiscy DB helmet, now Corum although not as severe. Also, in the Miami (YTM) vs OSU championship game, a helmet to Miami star RB Willis McGahee’s knee by OSU DB knocked him out of the game and required surgery. Miami likely wins that game otherwise. No bogus DPI call needed.

I'm not a former football player, but I've torn my ACL and learned something about knee injuries as a result. From what I saw in a couple of replays of Corum's injury, I don't think he was injured by a helmet to the knee.

From what I saw on video, I'm not sure that the second tackler's helmet actually hit Corum's knee. The impact to the knee seems to come from the second tackler's body, after his helmet passed by Corum's knee. On that play, there were two instances where Corum's left knee was subject to some torsion; and torsion in the knee joint is a very common cause of ACL and meniscus injuries.

The first instance happened when he was trying to step out of the first tackler's attempt to grab his ankle. At that point, he saw the second tackler coming for his knee, and started to turn to avoid the contact. His knee could have been subject to some dangerous torque at that point. It's hard to tell from the video, though. The second happened when the second tackler made contact with his leg while it was planted. I definitely saw some torsion there, when his upper body and thigh started to rotate while his foot was planted and his lower leg couldn't move in tandem with his thigh. After the second instance, he immediately grabbed his knee, reaching to cover his patella.

When I tore my ACL, my upper body and thigh were rotating one way while my foot was planted and stuck in place. I heard a pop and immediately grabbed my knee at the patella. When I saw Corum's reaction in real time, I thought he'd torn his ACL.

But I think it's unlikely that Corum tore his ACL, at least not a complete tear. If he had, the injury would have almost certainly been apparent when trainers did the Lachman test, which they did while he was on the field. (That's the test where a doctor manipulates the joint to see if there is instability). They would not have let him go back in the game if the Lachman test suggested a torn ACL or serious meniscus damage. But he could have had a partial tear of the ACL or some kind of small meniscus tear, and those things might not have been detectable through the Lachman test or even an MRI. Maybe that's why Harbaugh said his knee was structurally sound. That may have been the apparent conclusion in the immediate aftermath of the injury.

MRIs are not perfect at showing everything that's going on inside a knee. Doctors may not have been able to be sure that Corum needed surgery until he had other symptoms or until symptoms like swelling persisted longer than expected. They might have done additional imaging or used other methods to figure out that surgery was warranted.

Until we get more news about what kind of surgery and/or if there is any diagnosis change, I will remain a least a little hopeful that we can get BC back, possibly for 12/31 but more likely 1/10.  Overwhelmingly likely that wont be the case but its possible.

Knee bone bruises can be really really tricky.  Some NBA players have missed 12+ months recovering.  But generally a scope to work on a minor bone bruise can be a 4-6 week recovery.  It's an injury with a wide variety of outcomes and can be hard to predict.

DAMMIT!!

But the most important thing is that he has his best / most complete recovery possible so he can be ready for the NFL. Mr. Corum gave his all for Michigan and will always be remembered as a legend.

He had a great year. Hope he gets better quickly and makes the best decision for him. He’s earned all the good things for his conduct on and off the field.

Next man up.

Thank god we have Donovan Edwards and his sweet, sweet functional legs.  Hopefully his hand heals before the CFP and he can get back to catching the ball in the semi-finals to bring a second dimension.  5-6 handoffs and a few pass blocks for CJ to spell him, and we'll be okay.

Also, notice to JJ and the WRs: now's your time to shine.

This sucks. Just speculating but not having a structural problem and still needing surgery makes me think it's a meniscus, which is such a quick surgery to heal from. Such a shame that this not only happened, but happened so late in the season

Not always quick; it depends on whether they remove the torn piece or repair it. For small tears, removal can be a good treatment, and recovery from that is very quick. If the treatment is to repair the tear by sewing it closed, the recovery period can be much longer, usually at least three months.
