I don't know if Liberty can keep it up but I'm really liking what their offense is doing.
January 1st, 2024 at 1:41 PM ^
Their D ain’t playing badly, either (understatement)!
January 1st, 2024 at 1:40 PM ^
Good drive for TN here.
January 1st, 2024 at 1:46 PM ^
Those seven points might hold up the whole way.
January 1st, 2024 at 1:46 PM ^
Might be ballgame in Orlando.
January 1st, 2024 at 1:47 PM ^
Hate to say it, but that’s the game for Iowa
January 1st, 2024 at 2:01 PM ^
What the hell was that spot against Iowa. My God. That wasn't even close
January 1st, 2024 at 2:02 PM ^
There should be a new rule in Iowa football games...when the other team scores first, call it. End it right there. Mercy rule.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:04 PM ^
Change the drop kick rule to include punts and Iowa is #1.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:07 PM ^
Or let Iowa play rugby scoring
January 1st, 2024 at 2:08 PM ^
OSU is giving them a run for their money
January 1st, 2024 at 2:07 PM ^
Iowa & Liberty looking ded now.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:16 PM ^
Looks like Doug is getting crushed by a grand piano at center stage.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:10 PM ^
2 long drives against Iowa now.
Tennessee's offense relies pretty heavily upon moving numbers to open up space, and that seems like a particularly good method for attacking Iowa's defense. Iowa's defense is less about elite athletes (though they develop a few) and more about using discipline to constrict space for offenses to operate. Tennessee's offensive philosophy naturally counters that principle with its ultra-wide sets and vertical passing routes, and then you've got good athletes that can make plays against lesser ones.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:10 PM ^
Tennessee making that Iowa defense look less than historically great.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:14 PM ^
TN is just running down the throat of IA. Why did Michigan running game have such a tough time against IA D?
January 1st, 2024 at 2:17 PM ^
1. No Zinter and our OL might be a concern;
2. Numbers. Tennessee spreads the field so far that the secondary cannot assist, and uses the QB in a way Michigan did not this year with McCarthy being protected for today's game. If Michigan were running with these number matchups they'd be carving it up, too.
The way Michigan constricts running attacks is a bit different, with our superior DTs erasing numerical advantages. Michigan is built to stop this kind of running attack, while Iowa is not as well-equipped.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:20 PM ^
Without Zinter our OL is equal or even better than TN current OL. I hope Michigan can come up with a better zone blocking scheme to improve the running game against Alabama. I'm sure if JJ is part of an RPO, it will improve our running game.

Also, it can't be stressed enough how little UM needed to care about beating Iowa. They had more games to play that were meaningful and had already lost their best offensive lineman the week before. This game UT is playing is a month later and is the end of their season; they clearly care more about Iowa as an opponent compared to UM. They also did this to Clemson last year with Joe Milton and everyone thought they were going to blow the doors off people in 2023 and then they didn't.
Michigan's running game was (compared to past seasons) mediocre all season but we saw maybe 2-3 tiny wrinkles that whole game and anyone looking for more into that performance are going to be grasping a bit.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:26 PM ^
This is what Oregon does really well - when they've got a talent disparity they just smash you down as quickly as possible. And when the do everyone says "how is this team not playing for a title?" and then you see them against equally-talented teams and they suddenly are way more beatable.
I'm interested to see how they look in the Big 10 next year; it'll be structurally so different than the Pac-12 for them.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:29 PM ^
Reminds me of the Stoops Oklahoma teams.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:44 PM ^
Stoops did it a bunch. Some of those Florida teams under Spurrier. Mel Tucker did that with MSU at times, leaving his starters in way late into games to goose the score.
These G5 teams are sometimes legitimately good teams and in those seasons they should be treated as such - Cincy in 2021 and Tulane in 2022 are good recent examples, as were some of those great Boise teams - and sometimes they're like this season or the Memphis team from 2019 or the WMU team under Fleck that are just the "best" of a bunch of flawed, mid-level programs and you don't necessarily need to give them as a sacrificial lamb so that Oregon gets to end a season with a sweeter taste in their mouth than they deserve.

I find it highly suspicious that Liberty athletics and specifically football have gotten so good so fast. Its a private school of questionable character so im fairly certain they’re just cutting checks to a lot of players. They certainly are highly motivated to be the evangelical Notre Dame as they say. I just cant figure out what the draw of that school would be otherwise vs any other G5. $$$$
January 1st, 2024 at 2:37 PM ^
I mean...they've been pretty public about this being their approach for a while. They have far better facilities and resources than your average G5 program, and know they can sportswash a lot of their issues with a good product on the field.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:37 PM ^
The football players are pretty much allowed to do anything and don't have to follow all the other "biblically based" rules as the rest of the student body.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:47 PM ^
I sort of figured Liberty had to have carve outs for players like that to ensure they could actually recruit a competitive team
January 1st, 2024 at 2:39 PM ^
Grifters gonna grift. Their founder was a superlatively prolific con man, so it’s on-brand to have some flash-in-the-pan success then be exposed as frauds. “they shall soon be cut down like grass and wither as the green herb”
January 1st, 2024 at 2:34 PM ^
I have absolutely no love for Liberty University or the people who run it but this officiating has been pretty terrible in this game and has leaned heavily against the Flames.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:36 PM ^
True. And fine by me.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:35 PM ^
Given how bad Wisconsin looked this year, there's no way they should be in the game if LSU (even minus Daniels) is the SEC force they are supposed to be.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:39 PM ^
I think he was out but whatever
January 1st, 2024 at 2:39 PM ^
Sure looked like his toe was on the sideline, IMO, Wisky got boned on that replay review.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:41 PM ^
Having said that if it’s not indisputable can’t overturn call on field. Tough call.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:46 PM ^
Yes. And it was a nice-looking throw and catch.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:44 PM ^
Get to half yard line and Wisconsin runs a rpo keeper with Mordecai for a loss of 7. Good play call!
January 1st, 2024 at 2:47 PM ^
Right?! Why not one tush push on first down?
January 1st, 2024 at 2:47 PM ^
This Oregon/Liberty game is showing what it’s going to be like next year in the 5/12 matchup. It’s basically a bye week for that team.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:49 PM ^
And on top of all that it will be a home game for the 5-team
January 1st, 2024 at 2:52 PM ^
And kids will still sit out, especially if they are NFL locks, because they know there is no chance.
This isn't basketball where a #12 seed can go on some fluke run in the tournament.
January 1st, 2024 at 3:05 PM ^
I agree. Unless a team is suddenly on a roll and/or only lost a few relatively close games to great teams like PSU, why risk injury with three more hard-hitting games? And even then, ehy risk it if you already know your NFL draft status.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:50 PM ^
Thats fine. In most years the 1-4 seeds in the NCAA tournament get ‘byes’ but it gives deserving mid-majors their shot and sometimes it results in awesome upsets
January 1st, 2024 at 3:01 PM ^
Liberty is a weak G5 team that made it due to being undefeated. There will be years that the G5 entrant will at least have some guys, and probably at least a year or two where that will combine with a 5 seed that either takes them lightly or is a definite step down from the best teams and you can get a game.
Usually not, though. It's not a bad consolation for a team that misses a top 4 team to get an easier game.
January 1st, 2024 at 3:01 PM ^
There’s 68 teams in basketball, completely different venue. If this was a 32 team format I’d be all for several mid major types but Liberty isn’t even close to a top 12 team and neither will be whoever is the non power five team next year. It’ll be a bloodbath just like today. I want the best 12 teams in there, don’t care what conference they are in.
January 1st, 2024 at 3:02 PM ^
Purdue asks "Where did my bye go?"
January 1st, 2024 at 2:48 PM ^
Gavin DeGraw playing halftime show for Iowa-Tennesee. That is in fact actually happening.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:49 PM ^
There is absolutely nothing dumber than watching teams do that stupid arm flail thing as their team is kicking off.
January 1st, 2024 at 2:52 PM ^
If you're Wisconsin, you gotta be feeling really good. Yeah, you blew a 14-point lead, but you're hanging with an "SEC power" full of talented athletes and a have FG lead heading into the 4thQ.
January 1st, 2024 at 3:03 PM ^
The SEC propaganda machine will point out Daniels isn’t playing as a qualifier for this game, what they didn’t do for Ohio St or the stars that sat out for Penn St. That was just pure dominance for the SEC.
January 1st, 2024 at 3:04 PM ^
And if you're Iowa, you're down 14, but Tennessee has the ball, so your defense has a chance to score.
January 1st, 2024 at 3:07 PM ^
LOL!
