Honestly he might be the reason I’m such a staunch Michigan fan. His athletic feats coincided with the beginning  of my interest in college football as an adolescent.

Proud to say I was at the 97 osu game and never heard it louder there than when he brought back that punt.  The great ones come through in the biggest moments

That’s awesome, a wise use of your birthday funds! I wish I were there. I was a junior in high school in the Indy area, but was about six years into my Michigan fandom which obviously was reaching new peaks at that time. Watching Desmond Howard and Woodson during my formative years as a sports fan has to be about as good as it gets.

The best Michigan football player I've ever seen. Period.

Lots of greats - he's the GOAT in my book.

Congrats, Charles, well deserved. Go Blue Forever!

Still one of the best INTs I've ever seen.  I fear we will never return to what he gave us, but we'll always have the memories.  If you're a UM fan in your 40s, chances are he's your fave.  He's the best I've ever seen do it in a winged helmet.

Shocker!!!!  I mean, what took him so long?  That slacker...

(If you can't detect that sarcasm, you'll never detect any sarcasm...)

Dude was one of the best corners I've ever seen...

Haha - nice one, MA.

No f-ing way. Peyton was a better as a pro than he was in college. Early on, including his entire college career, he had "happy feet" when under pressure, and made some horrible decisions.

No question the guy was a fantastic player, but Woodson was electric, and almost a perfect CB. When you see someone who's got "it", you know it immediately.

Chuck was that guy. He had talent, smarts, drive, swag, confidence, technique, tenacity, drive - guy had it all. And what an athlete! Hips, hops, strength, speed - Charles Woodson was spectacular.

I've been privileged to see amazing players over the years - AC, Desmond, Denard, list goes on and on - but Charles Woodson is the greatest Michigan player I've ever seen.

My Charles Woodson story.

I was waiting for "next" on the A court at CCRB at age 35 the year before the NC when Chuck, David Bowens, Juaqin Feazell, and another football player asked if they could run with me.

Run we did -- the court for about three hours. Woodson wasn't a great BB player but he was the singularly most athletic person I've ever seen. Quick jumper with a great vertical. I threw a couple of ally-oop passes for dunks to Bowens who was a really fun guy.

They were both all-state at their respective high schools.

I'm pretty sure they've never re-told the story of playing with an old, 5'10" PoliSci major to their friends like I have a half million times, though.

Charles Woodson has more interceptions than Deion. More forced fumbles than Brian Urlacher and almost twice as many tackles as Ed Reed.

He won a Heisman, College National Championship, Rookie Defensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Super Bowl and 1st Ballot Hall of Fame.

Michigan grad from Indy here.

Woodson and Peyton perpetually being tied together is funny to me.

Same class, same Heisman class, both retired at the same time, same HOF class (both first ballots duh).

I might watch the nfl hall of fame induction ceremony for their interaction. I hope Woodson is like, “man, this is a really special award. I’ve received a lot of them through the years but this one is really, really great. I’m going to put this trophy right up front... *pauses and looks at Peyton*... next to my Heisman”.

Is there something you can accomplish on a football field at any level that he didn't do?

H.S.: 1st Team All-American on every list, Mr. Football in Ohio

College: All-American, Heisman Trophy, National Championship

Pro: All-Pro at 2 positions, Def Rookie of the Year, Def Player of the Year, Super Bowl ring, Hall of Fame

Talk about checking every box.

Marcus Allen technically has a better trophy case, IMO.

Allen basically has all of those (admittedly Allen played but was a back-up on the 1978 USC National Title team), PLUS an NFL MVP and a Super Bowl MVP (things it's harder for a defensive player to win, although it has been done).

But still --- it's an INCREDIBLE trophy case for Woodson.

CWoodson was such an unbelievable player.... he was pretty much a lock, but its still great to watch his notification video (not the same as years past, but still very cool).

Also I think its awesome to see him and Peyton get inducted in the same year on the first try... Forever linked  by the Heisman, both get into Canton the same year.

Its amazing really

Congratulations Charles. Well deserved. He was so much fun to watch.

I think the shirt was “water covers 71% of the earth, Charles Woodson covered the rest. “

All the above ^ ^ ^  and thank you for the great stories.

His pass defense was obvious (and fun to watch) for an average football fan like myself.  What shocked me while reviewing he career stats at Michigan was that you couldn't really run to his side of the field either.  His run defense was just as impressive as his pass defense.  (I think yards per play on the ground to his side of the field was something like half of what it was to the opposite side of the field.)  He took away half the field in the air and on the ground.  (There are plenty of highlights of him making a TFL after shedding a block but apparently those don't make the TV highlight reels.)

Like more than a few of us, I was teenager during the Bo 1980s - and even though we had tremendous talent & results - the perfect season eluded Michigan.  It was the heartbreak we all shared.

1997 was Woodson's magnum opus.

He picked up the team in every situation where in seasons past, Michigan would have garnered that one loss or tie. Woodson was not to be denied.  The punt return against osu was gold-dust.

It was if Bob Ufer and Fielding Yost looked down upon Michigan Stadium that day and said....

Charles Woodson - you are the greatest Michigan football player ever.

Then, unlike so many "highly touted" college players, Woodson made good in the NFL building a legendary career and so thankful the dude got his SuperBowl win.

"You Know The School" was the greatest shout out as well.

Great HoF inductee and Go Blue!

My favorite Michigan player! Loved watching him in the NFL. When Charles was at Fremont my brother had to play against him when he was at Bedford. My brother got burned a lot.

My Top 10 list of very best guys I watched play college football, not in any order - CW included:

Charles Woodson

Earl Campbell

Anthony Munoz

Deion Sanders

Lee Roy Selmon

Vince Young

Herschel Walker

John Elway

Lawrence Taylor

Bo Jackson

Honorable mentions: AC, Desmond, Ed Reed, Barry Sanders, Warren Sapp, Kenny Easley, Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Archie Griffin (grudgingly), Ronnie Lott, Manning, Billy Sims, Rod Woodson, Chris Spielman (again, grudgingly), Hugh Green, Marcus Allen, Michael Vick, Jack Tatum (ugh).

Before my time by a few years, but heard enough about to name here: Jim Brown, OJ Simpson, Bubba Smith, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus.

Talking only about college, not pros. Lots of guys didn't quite make my cut that are surely deserving. Probably most controversial on my list is Vince Young - but damn, his performance against All-time great USC team was maybe the best game I've ever seen anyone play.
