Caleb Love De-commits
Per 24/7, Caleb Love will no longer be joining the team.
It isn't just him and Michigan struggling with the portal it is many other schools also. But when you can only choose between 10% to 20% or so of portal players where as everyone else gets to choose between all of them it puts us at a major disadvantage. I am sure Juwan thought it was all taken care of and probably was assured of Love being accepted then somewhere along the line it got messed up. It is frustrating to see this happen again and I think if a kid wants to transfer the old school and new school gives them every opportunity to make it happen. If an extra class needs to be taken then one school needs to let them take it or whatever the reason is.
Whatever bro. This shite is not on Juwan.
Bullish on in game coaching? How? Why?
I like the sets we run and we typically make solid in game adjustments. We have had trouble making things work at times but those are often due to roster construction which I said is his weakness.
Admissions strike again.
As does the"education" that kids get at UNC.
Fair enough.... but if we are going to have standards closer to those of Stanford than Kentucky, we can't get frustrated when we aren't competing for NCs.
It's stupid. UNC is a great school.
You are aware there was a scandal involving their student athletes, no? We've got no assurances that caleb love has anything resembling a proper transcript.
So now we're not admitting ANY athlete from UNC? Great argument. FOH with that.
I don't get how we get this far along and just find out now he cannot get through admissions. Just a complete waste of time when we could be looking elsewhere. Doesn't make any sense to me.
Well, it may be a credit transfer issue, not an admissions issue.
If he doesn’t have his undergraduate degree he may be losing a lot of credits earned by coming here. This is speculation, but the whole “it’s an admissions Issue” is vague and as speculative.
Plus, who handles the transfer credit verification could be a bunch of pompous professors (I speak for my clan) who don’t see an equivalent course as equivalent because of “rigor.”
All we can verify is that it fucking sucks that Love has left the arena.
Does it really matter to Love if he's academically a junior instead of a senior? I assume his goal is just to leave college anyway and play basketball and he probably wanted to be a one and done like most 5 stars.
If he doesn’t have enough credits transfer, he wouldn’t be making sufficient progress to remain academically eligible to play.
Admissions could look at his transcript and accept him. Then, he talks to the college administration who tell him he only gets X credits and he’s just a sophomore instead of a senior. That would cause me to decommit late in the process. But I’m just speculating.
What is Juwan supposed to do at this point? Everyone he recruits either leaves earlier than expected or never makes it to campus. He’s not even getting the opportunity to build a team.
If I were him, I’d head back to the NBA asap. CBB is FUBAR.
I mean part of the issue is him recruiting players who cannot get in. The admissions issue sucks, but part of it is on him
Maybe, and he has made some mistakes. But it seems pretty unfair to hire a first-time college coach and expect him to understand the admissions process, not to mention NIL. Juwan is clearly not getting the support he needs to build a successful program.
He has been here for four years. If he doesn’t understand the admissions process by now that is on him.
Why is that even under the job description of the head coach? Michigan really can’t find someone other than Howard to vet the academics of transfers?
Do you think Bill Self spends much time consulting with Kansas admissions? Is John Calipari reviewing transcripts for transfer-eligible credits? This is ridiculous.
I'm sure Howard can delegate that responsibility to someone and maybe already has. It's still part of his responsibility to make sure he's not wasting his time recruiting people who can't get in.
Why is that even under the job description of the head coach?
He coaches student athletes...
If he doesn't know the admissions process at this point, he should be shown the door immediately. That would be absurd.
You are right. It's completely unfair to hire someone who doesn't understand his job and getting paid a kings ransom to not know.
Sure, but how many of the best basketball players in the portal can reasonably be expected to get in? If Juwan goes into every offseason and never even contacts the top X amount of players in the portal because they might not have all the credits they want to transfer in, then the program is immediately lowering its potential talent ceiling. Seems like a real catch-22 situation to me.
Part of that is Juwan’s responsibility to know. He should be aware of what it takes to get a player into the school before trying to sign said player.
Juwan came into this lacking experience both as a HC and in the college game. It’s biting him in the ass.
It would probably be best for him to go back to the league. He knows it and he doesn’t have to recruit. Michigan needs to find a lifer college coach. A guy who has the coaching chops and the experience with recruiting in the modern era. Not easy to find, but this is an attractive job.
You say this like there aren't people within the Michigan basketball program who handle this stuff.
You really think Juwan or Beilein is/was responsible for reviewing course transcripts and figuring out what credits transfer and which ones do not?
You all are fucking miserable and don't have a clue.
Do you think Jim Harbaugh does this?
Michigan makes damn near $200M/year...you REALLY don't think they have a staff for this? For all sports?
My God.
Y'all will blame Howard for anything. It's his job to recruit guys...if the guys he recruits can't get in, Michigan has people on staff to catch that and communicate that. It's not a head coach's (of ANY sport) job to know if Econ 102 or Sports Business 204 transfers from North Carolina to Michigan.
Michigan as a whole needs to get its shit together...they need to be able to figure this stuff out on the fly. If there is a waiver process, Athletics needs to be able to jump the line so decisions can get made quickly.
Notice that this is always with transfers...Howard has never had an issue with high school recruits. So what is your theory there? He somehow understands high school admissions and transcripts, but not college transfers (even though he's gotten transfers every year he's been at Michigan)?
I think people are saying Howard should know because whoever actually does handle the logistics clearly isn't good or Howard isn't listening, but it's on him to figure it out.
i believe he had an issue with this incoming class...kante
Settle down. And you're wrong. He should have a pretty good idea of how the process works by now.
Yeah but we don’t know if he spoke with admissions and they gave him the okay to offer Love. It’s possible he thought Caleb would have x amount of credits by the summer to transfer and Love failed to acquire to them
Your comment makes no sense this. whole new portal thing just starting happening when Howard was hired. Granted he is a new head coach but coaches have people on the staff who find out if this guy can transfer in or not. They probably did all the research and he was good to transfer in and something got flagged at last second or something. But to blame Howard on this is just ignorance at its finest. You think JH wasted all this time not knowing he wasn't going to be able to transfer in and just thought WTF I won't go after anyone else. I am sure if he knew that Love might not qualify there would have been more out there and he would have been going after more players? Just doesn't make sense
We’re a Football School now…
Juwan meeting with admissions went well.
Thanks, Admissions! Hopefully we can get RayJ Dennis
Yeah, not optimal. I assume this is an admissions issue, which makes me wonder why they didn't flag this earlier. He's been at UNC for 3 years so it's not like they didn't know he had a bunch of credits and classes that needed to transfer.
Ah well. I wasn't over-the-moon about Love as a player (he's just such a chucker that while he'd have some great games there's also a good chance he'd net out to an average player) but this still sucks in no small part because it means they likely missed out on someone else because they thought that spot was filled.
Horseshit
I don't love it.
Pour one out for the 2-19, 0-11 from 3 performance buzzer beating loss to Indiana/Illinois/Purdue that we never got to see
I mostly remember him from absolutely torching UM two years ago but when he committed I went and looked at his advanced stats and was already dreading those types of games. Yeah guys can change with different coaches and he's still the type of tough shot taker this team needs but I think fans were going to be super annoyed with him for long stretches of the year.
I think people saw his PPG and thought he was just a great scorer. They probably didn't notice how awful his shooting and shooting splits are.
