BPONE* Impact for Michigan Men's Basketball 2023-24 Version

Other than possibly Tarris Reed, Jr. and Dug McDaniel, would any of the other players on that roster be expected to be regular starters for any other Big Ten team that would be contending for post-season play this coming season?

If there are no further additions to the roster for the upcoming season, then there could be at least five scholarships available for the 2024-25 season, depending on whether any current players might enter the transfer portal.

Considering the weakness of that current roster, would the expectations for the upcoming season be so low that any finish better than 13th in the Big Ten and at least 12 wins for the season with at least four wins in Big Ten games be considered enough for Juwan Howard to be given a chance to build a roster through admittable transfers and high-caliber freshmen for the 2024-25 season? (NOTE: Last-season's 13th-place team in the Big Ten was Ohio State that was 5-15 in Big Ten games and 16-19 overall. Chris Holtmann did not lose his job as Ohio State's coach.)

Another tough break, wonder whether admissions is the culprit again (probably). If so, it is imperative that the coaching staff does ultra-due diligence before trying to add someone in the future, as it has happened multiple times now (plus with HS recruits). We haven't seen this problem with the football team at anything close to this level (with plenty of transfers coming in), so there is clearly a way to navigate this and a way not to. Want to hope for the best, but having a hard time seeing how this is going to be a successful or even decent upcoming season, just doesn't seem to be enough there, there (talent wise). Things being this disjointed and un-optimistic should not be acceptable going into year 5 of JH, especially considering the strong infrastructure that was in place beforehand

There are some aspects to the UM that are as essential to its identity as the Complete Package among universities.

As essential as the helmet.

If you’re going to get on your high horse about M education you should probably acknowledge that most of the football and basketball players aren’t making it in on grades alone. So…either we hold those standards across the board and become U Chicago or we recognize that football and basketball student athletes bring a different set of skills that still contribute to the university.

I tried to warn y'all. Got negbanged for not outing sources, which I understand, but wanted to lessen the blow for when this happened at least.

Things go up and down. But man, when there's a bad spell, we're quick to insist that Michigan is operating at a profound systematic disadvantage, and will never compete at a top level again. Remember when everyone here was convinced that we couldn't get the kind of recruits we needed to beat OSU in football?

And now it's "we're screwed because of NIL" (as if every other school in the world is recruiting five stars left and right), and "our admissions standards are unreasonable and impossible!"

Eh. As much as people are convinced that Michigan's high academic standards and reluctance to compete directly in a pay-per-play race to the bottom with other schools dooms us, I think it also makes us a damned attractive place for players coming from families that recognize the value of a Michigan degree and an honorable/ethical environment. It's a positive as much as a negative.

We'll get back into it. Maybe not 2023-24, but eventually. I'm a big fan of Juwan's, and I don't think creating an environment of hostility around the coaching staff is likely to help us recruit better. Go Blue.

Hate that Michigan has these types of problems. If a coach wants to go get a transfer they should not have to wonder and worry if they will be accepted into the program. As long as the athlete does not have some sort of criminal charges they should be allowed in. This bs about credits transferring is ridiculous. To pretend that we care about academics in sports is a joke. Just win and stay out of trouble. That may not be a popular take but it’s the truth.

It's probably not "credits not good enough"

It's probably too many credits.

Michigan requires that you get at least 50% of your credits from Michigan.

No matter WHERE you are transferring from - they are not going to let you transfer in more than 60 credits. Not from UNC, or Harvard, or MIT, or Princeton.

Doesn't matter how strong those academic programs are - if you want a Michigan degree, you're going to have to earn more than 50% of it AT MICHIGAN.

Either a school decides to sacrifice its academic standards for the sake or it doesn't. I can't disagree with the school that decides it's not worth it. They are schools, not sports incubators.
