Brian Griese Says Big Ten Made a Mistake By Cancelling the Season Early

Brian Griese says that the kids are ones who are suffering because of the decision to cancel the season early, and says he never would have been drafted or even met his wife if he hadn't been allowed to play his senior season.

“It’s that game of sliding doors that is real for seniors that are playing in college right now that are not potentially going to have an opportunity to fulfill that dream, and that’s what bothers me the most.”

I agree with Brian 100%...Taking an entire year off would be absolutely devastating to these kids and their future careers and social life, not to mention the Michigan football program itself.

I get it, he's a guy who needed his senior year of football to basically change his whole life. If I remember right, he was debating quitting football and working at a bank his brother was at or something. Now he's doing Monday Night Football, after being a Pro Bowl QB and winning a National Championship in college. That's how important a year of football is to him.

I don't think he's wrong here. It's not a stretch to think that guys willing to risk CTE don't give a damn about a virus that barely affects their demographic.

I also understand that it's not just about the guys on the field. It's a huge problem with no clear answer. Griese isn't 100% right, because no one is -- but his point is definitely not wrong either.

He’s right. It was premature. They should have waited at least another two-three weeks before making a decision. This will mean long term damage for the conference. What a shame.

Schlissel had to cancel football so that the attendance streak would not end.

It's really that simple. He doesn't want to see football played in an empty stadium.  If there's not 100k+ fans is it really Michigan football?

Those individuals who want to participate should be able to participate.

Those that don't should have zero consequences for not doing so.

Some might want to still practice and workout with the team and some might not. That's fine.

Anyway, I watched a few minutes of the Navy BYU game and it was lame as hell. Completely sterile.
So I don't really care if BIG plays or not and I have been a HUYGE college football fan for 40+ years.

Schools are halting practices and that is without playing each other. I was against the postponement when it happened. Now we see the problems of containing the virus and potential long term effects to athletes. It wasn't a mistake to postpone and put the health of the players and their families first. This is going to be a week by week evaluation. We shall see how the conferences who play are fairing in several weeks.

Okay the unspoken thing here is that it was politically incorrect for the SEC/ACC/Pac 12/Big 12 to take any decision other than the ones they took. Pac 12 member school's state governments would have never allowed them to play no matter what the league office did, and Big 12/ACC/SEC state legislatures/governors would have never allowed them to not play.

That's the thing people need to get a grasp on in Big 10 land: the ACC/SEC/Big 12 didn't leave them twisting in the wind because the admins of those schools don't believe in science, they made the decision to go forward because the state governments of their member schools would not have allowed them to postpone with the exception of a handful of schools in each league. I'm not sure why the Big 10 thought they could lead the power five into a postponement to January and have the entire P5 just play a delayed season complete with bowl games when that was obviously politically untenable for 3/5 of the P5.

FWIW (which is pretty much nothing) I agree with Brian Griese.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed my experience at UM, I can imagine that without the oversight of a team, these young men may be more likely to put themselves and others in harm's way at various parties and events.  Meanwhile, I believe that a football player that is responsible for his team's health through his actions is more likely to make the right decision away from the field.

I continue to believe that our coach has the best interest of his players in mind and thus far the facts bear him out.

Brian is correct! The over blown myocardial rate, which the B1G used to shut down the season, that stated 30 percent of COVID patients would end up with the virus affecting the heart was wrong! It is less than 5 percent from many other studies. If the B1G does not start football in October they're screwed and will be waiting around for the PAC 12 to start their season, may be in January to have the Rose Bowl in March and dumb bowl games with other PAC 12 teams.
