It's a garbage article with a misleading lead. The only worthwhile info is taken from another article by Dan Wolken, who goes into a lot more detail. There are no OSU sources, just people speculating who might be candidates, just like we've been doing here.

That would be a pretty sensible hire for them though a bit surprising with him just walking away and making a big deal of the fact that he just wanted to lay low in his house in Chicago’s Gold Coast with his wife.

Can imagine why he would be tempted. Though his legacy is pretty solid and not like he needs the money.

I completely disagree that this is a "sensible hire" to the point where I had to sign up to chime in. From a strictly football standpoint, sure. Having said that, you think Ohio State, who would hypothetically have just fired a coach for a domestic violence coverup, would be able to turn to Bob Stoops?

Let me remind you of somebody by the name of Joe Mixon. Do you think Ohio State would want this plastered over the media after they "cleaned house" following Meyer's firing? For the same reason they couldn't allow Wilson or Schiano to be the temporary replacement and instead went with the extremely underqualified Day, they certainly can't pick Stoops as a permanent replacement. It would be a PR nightmare. "Ohio State once again placing winning over human decency! They've learned nothing! Culture of abuse enablement continues!"

This is also in the hypothetical event that Stoops returns. Also remember that his dad died at age 54, younger than Stoops is now, one of the big reasons that he retired and wanted to prioritize his family.

He didn't underachieve at OU. He had a top 10 team 11 times, 14 double-digit-win seasons, a national championship, and won his conference 11 times. The team he built went to the playoffs last year. Outside of Saban, he is about as close to Urban as they could get.

Morons say Stoops underachieved when he literally has one of the best resumes in college football in the last 20 years other than Saban and Meyer. If Stoops underachieved what in the hell have we done for the last 30? Because that's how long you have to go back for us to have won the number of conference titles OU has since 2000. Most of them in a conference with a championship game.

Because duh, of course. The choice is obvious. Whether he’ll do it is something different. If urban does get fired I guarantee it’s him because OSU is never going to have to wander in the wilderness like literally every other program has had to do. It’s sickening

Let’s be real here, anyone short of Nick Saban, Bill Belichek, or Dabo Swinney would be a step back. Meyer might have the most punchable face on the planet but the motherfucker can coach/recruit. Not that I would want my kid playing for him, but the point remains.

I dont think he gets the axe, but if he does, there is damn near 0 chance Ohio State gets to hire a coach on his level.

No way in hell.

1. Stoops is not coming out of retirement for any football job other than the one he just left (which now has a good, young coach who wouldn't leave OU and who Stoops groomed, so nope). The only thing he would come out of retirement for is the Oklahoma AD job.

2. Stoops is older than Meyer and has already abruptly retired once. Why would Ohio State hire a coach they can't count on to be there for 15-ish years?

3. Stoops is, IMO, not "new school" enough for the game anymore and Ohio State should know this. I know that he's only a few years older than Meyer and Harbaugh, but when Stoops took the Oklahoma job, Meyer was a WR coach at Notre Dame and Jim was still the QB for the Chargers. Stoops is a bit in the previous generation of coaches, and wouldn't be able to keep up with Jim and Franklin at Penn State.

It's going to be Day, unless he tanks and goes like 8-4, in which case they will hire Matt Campbell.

Nope. No way. People tend to forget that the reason he retired is that his father died from a heart attack while he was coaching at the same age Stoops is now. Stoops has heart disease. He doesn’t want to suffer the same fate.

Matt Campbell (Iowa St) had to address this with the media before camp started, as his name is swirling around somewhere about taking the job if Urban gets fired.  I've always like Matt Campbell.  Seems like a good coach and a solid dude.

I tend to agree.

If they were going to fire Meyer there would be more stuff leaking out by now.

There have been some claims in Reddit that Meyer would be fired or resign today or tomorrow from posters that have some plausibility as credible sources.  But such claims have been few.  No more than a couple.

Seems like if it had been decided there would be more leaks.  Not a super strong indicator.  But the lack of leaking info suggests no internal decision to fire Meyer, at least not yet.

Yeah, of course it takes more than 48 hours.  And it remains possible that he could still be fired after a more protracted investigation.

But...depending on the facts a firing can occur before the full investigation is complete.

If it were as simple as (1) Meyer admitted that he knew in 2015, and (2) admitted that he buried it in 2015, and (3) OSU President (and it is the President not the AD that will make the call here) already decided that he can't tolerate that...then a very plausible timeline is that Meyer is out by the end of today (even though the full investigation continues).

If it does not happen today or tomorrow, then then it suggests for any number of reason that Meyer's probability of keeping his job goes up, perhaps because the facts are sort of muddy and/or OSU is searching around for some plausible way to keep him.

And...the lack of leaks of an imminent firing points in the same direction.

Just depends on the facts.  If it is pretty simple, then it does not take very long to figure out if Meyer did something that the OSU Pres considers a firing offense.

If the whole thing is muddy and ambiguous, then it takes more time to do the investigation.  And it also probably provides more ways for OSU to find a version of the facts that allows them to keep Meyer.

Internet says it took 9 days to fire Petrino at Arkansas, FWIW.

I doubt Stoops will ever coach OSU.  This isn't the same as when Urban "retired" after UF and fell into OSUs lap.  Stoops retirement is legit, and while he is from Ohio I never got the sense he idolized OSU like Urban did.

Just a click bait article.  Sources are 'unnamed college football insiders.'

Nothing wrong with that.  Just means Wolken spoke with a few random people around CFB and they gave their opinion the Stoops would be an obvious name to put on the list.

Not really any more relevant than asking random posters to MGoBlog what names would be obvious choices to replace Meyer.  Just people speculating about an obvious name to be considered.

Stoops is a logical choice.

He's a big name. He can recruit. He knows how to work with smart coordinators. They don't need a guy to be there for 20 years, they need a guy who can keep the machine rolling, and he can do that.

He would be a good choice. I'd feel marginally better about our rivalry if he's at the helm than Urban, but that's true of almost any coach they could hire.

If any of these “candidates” are leaks from OSU insiders, that’s pretty silly. You don’t want to give off the impression that somebody is available so you went ahead and pulled the trigger on Urban vs he’s leaving because human decency. That would be tone deaf. Which maybe makes me think they’d do it

He’s not leaving retirement.  Why would he walk away from OKLAHOMA just to then go to Ohio State?

I mean, I’d be fine with it.  Stoops’ defenses are typically not great.  But I don’t wanna have to hate him.  I like Bob.
