Umbig stated that there would be other Wisconsin or Wisconsin lineage guys joining the staff too. edit: could be just S&C support staff.

the video of herberts technique and philosophy is pretty interesting. In that video he talks about working on the lower half of players and building their strength from the ground up. thats something I think our offensive linemen have been lacking for years. it seems like they were relying on their upper body strnght to move guys and not their leg drive to move people off the ball. if that is something that can be changed here then there should be a good amount of development from the younger o-line and d-line players whch will be good for everyone

Yep, anyone who thought the Michigan OL wasn't getting push didn't actually watch the line the second half of the year.  Once they cleaned up the mental errors a bit the line would routinely get push and create lanes for the RBs.  But with a lack of passing game, there was often a safety to tackle after gains of 4-6 yards.  Not much more you can expect from the OL in run blocking.  And as you said, the issue with pass blocking wasn't due to strength.

Considering the changes in the S&C staff and Coach Harbaugh's statement about the team needing to "get stronger," I'm not surprised by this kind of speculation. Further, as none of us know what the coaches are seeing, it can't be said that strength/agility issues are not playing a role in technique issues.

S&C plays a role regardless of one's lack of understanding of how/how much it does. Yes, some put waaay too much stock into it but other's shouldn't swing to the other extreme in saying it plays a tangential role either.

sure being as they mentally had lapses at what seemed like a higher frequency then anticipated they still didnt drive teams off the ball. in their loses they average 2.6 with a long of 12, 2.4 with a long of 14, 1.6 with a long of 12, and 2.8 with a long of 24. its just the fact they didnt seem to blow the good teams off the line. maybe its something that is technique and not strength but i think that it wouldnt hurt to be stronger along the offensive front

I can see this from my section which is a good 50 yards from the play.

The guy behind me can actually see a) "effort"; b) "focus" and c) if guys have their "heads in the game". He can also tell if they need to "come on" and can communicate to the coach just by yelling "Come on, Harbaugh".

I need to up my game a bit.

I heard this guy single handedly built Wisconsin's OLine, Arkansas' OLine, Stanford's OLine, Alabama's OLine, Clemson's DLine, the Taj Mahal, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Good hire.

Our players have lacked size and strength for a long time. Our o lineman will greatly benefit from this. Heavy weights, low reps, beef and lots of sleep......let’s roll

Using the Arkansas O-line as a resume point isn't the best idea. I live in Little Rock and have watched the Arkansas qb's just get blasted over and over for the past 3-4 years. I don't necessarily believe it is the strength and conditioning program that caused this. I'm just saying that I'd slow down on anyone using the Arkansas connection as a good talking point.

Assuming Bush Sr gets safeties coach, that puts us back at 9 assistants, any ideas on who or what position will be targeted for the 10th spot? I keep reading Enos on here but not much on others.

S&C guys are part of the puzzle.  But only part.

They are not going to get you into the playoffs over winter conditioning.

Barwis was not magic nor was Gittleson as bad as people thought he was when the Barwis hype started.

Herbert will be fine, but he's not going to do anything magic.  Nor does he have to.

Herbert's received a number of accolades including being named a "Master Strength and Conditioning Coach" which supposedly is the profession's highest honor. The number of players he developed at Wisconsin and Arkansas who went on to the NFL is noteworthy.

However, this didn't prevent Arkansas from going 29-34 in Bert's four years there, which included a terrible 11-29 record in the SEC.

S&C won't by itself win championships.

your average ESPN talking head gang has to discuss the NHL or soccer. "Yeah this is good and ehhh  *desperately scans stats sheet to find something familiar looking*"

you can find posts welcoming Wellman because Barwis didn't do enough to prevent injuries, some of which was because he wasn't seen but not heard like any good S&C coach. This of course, was only after we heard how bad Gittleson was from the same bunch.

I know he hasn’t been at Wisconsin for a while but if he can get Michigan’s o-line mauling like Wisconsin’s is against Miami tonight, I’ll be very happy with this hire.

I love a good S&C thread when everyone that has ever been in a weight room is suddenly an expert on how to prepare high level athletes to compete in football.
