I’m interested…what is your problem with what I said? Why do you think an extension didn’t happen in the off season? Is the possibility that Harbaugh might still have a desire to return to the NFL really a crazy thought? Or is it just that you don’t want to think about that possibility, so no one should talk about it?

And let me throw out one more bit of reality that will no doubt bother you…I bet the humiliation of the university forcing him to take a pay cut to keep his job after 2020 still weighs on the ultra-competitive Harbaugh, and he’s not going to forget it. That doesn’t mean he would never sign a big deal to stay on, but his loyalties are to the players and Michigan football, not the people running things.

I've upvoted your posts--seems a quite reasonable take.

To answer your question about what may have changed for the timeline (because I agree--this could easily have been done this off-season if Harbaugh wanted it done): there's a chance, competitive as he is, that he is having too much fun/ease of family life to leave. The Lions are doing well, so you'd need to move your family away. Between his parents, his son and his family, and his own family and kids, that's a lot of people to move away from their relationships. Maybe he likes how some of the young players are buying in to become the future Sainristils, Jenkins, Zinters, Corums, etc.

That’s certainly a possibility. Moving isn’t easy on a family and he’s gone through a lot, including nearly losing his job, to achieve what he’s built at Michigan. If he were to go to the NFL, he’d be starting over with a bad team. It’s good to have options. I just think he might want to keep his options open until the season is over. The good news is this will be the year it finally gets decided. Either he leaves or stays and signs a contract that makes it clear he isn’t going to leave.

I'm not sure what a strawman is, but I think you're close to, if not right on, the button. Nothing you say bothers me because, contrary to what you believe, nothing you say is novel or insightful in the slightest bit. Do you really think you're the first and only person to think Harbaugh may still want to go the NFL or may harbor a grudge against the administration for various reasons? Do you really think no one thought that one of the two quarterbacks was likely going to leave after last season?

The only reason you bother me is that your takes come across as arrogant and condescending. Clearly I'm not the only one. Perhaps you should consider that bit of reality.

I really really hope this isn’t a deliberate leak from U of M. Because the only reason I could think of to leak something like this is if Harbaugh’s not sure if he wants to sign a long term extension.

Harbaugh doesn’t seem like the type to enjoy being strongarmed nor politicked.

Also, I hope that contract includes a TON of money for the best assistant coaches and analyst staff

This came up in his press conference today.

Harbaugh's response was basically:

"You want to be somewhere they want you and appreciate the things you are doing"

"Once that is there, you just have to get it into a contract"

A follow up question was asked about if he felt wanted at UofM:

"Uhhhhhhhhhh....yeah, I feel wanted here"

"Just need to get it into a contract"

This is exactly why JUB had to post a statement. Someone asked a question, JH answered honestly, and to avoid speculation JUB said he talked to some people in the admin and they're working on it. It's not the administration forcing Jim's hand, it's not Jim's people forcing the administration, it's someone in the media who asked a question that distracts everyone from this magical season we're having.

I still don't understand the "Harbaugh will be leaving for the NFL after this season" comments.  The NFL is a league for younger coaches, and Harbaugh reaching 60 does not fit the mold.  He is a perfect fit for Michigan, and if the University and AD would allow a little more flexibility on NIL, then he could definitely be the next Saban of winning national championships for a decade, of course without the shady shit.

My opinion is that if we win a NC, Jim will have reached the top of the mountain in CFB. All that would be left is a SB. Of course I hope to be wrong....but I'm sure a few NFL teams would want him with his NFL track record.

Last week a few Raiders fans were screaming "fire McDaniels, hire Harbaugh" at Mark Davis while he sat in his suite. He will have suitors.

How can you not understand it? He’s taken NFL interviews the last two off seasons. He’s said winning a Super Bowl remains an unrealized goal. This is his best Michigan team and his best chance to win it all in college, so of course he’s taking that shot, but Michigan for various reasons, is never going to be what Alabama was or Georgia is. He’ll never be a more attractive candidate than he will be after completing his third outstanding season in a row.

He is a perfect fit for Michigan.  Michigan may not be a perfect fit for him, in that he wants to win a Super Bowl.

If he decides that winning an NFL title is the most important thing he wants to do, then there's no amount of money, cover-from-NCAA-bullshit, NIL-support or other benefit they can offer to get him to stay.

I don't view this as a negative thing, not one bit.

After 2020, the administration wanted results.  Jim produced results.  Give the man his due - if he doesn't want to sign it now, he can wait a few months.  It's the administrations duty to try and retain, arguably, the best coach we've ever had.  Very happy to see this materialize.

I'm more interested in the length of the contract.  The money will be there.  My question is, what is the length of the extension?

Is it a 3-4 years extension (not preferred)?  Is it some goofy 4 year with an "auto" 1 year consistent renewal (again, not preferred)?

As a HUGE HOMER, I want a lifetime contract with a $1 billion dollar buyout, put all this to bed and know that we have the best coach in the land with us for another 10 years...

The Harbaugh wager GoFundMe account was drained to zero after you'd received your two dollar payout ($1 plus damages and interest) when Gimpy The GrownOld refused to pay you his $1 in a timely manner. This next payout to you has to come straight from his yachting budget. 😉

Thinking about Harbaugh's career trajectory, I'm sure the temptation to go win a Super Bowl in the NFL must be very great.  But at the same time, with the re-alignments and future revenue-sharing coming to CFB, the next 5 years are going to be as pivotal as any this sport has seen in the last century.  The teams that are strong coming out of that churn will be set up for a long run of success.

I think a lot about how the last great sea change in CFB happened in 2014, the first year of the 4 team playoff.  And OSU won the whole damn thing while we suffered through terminal Brady Hoke.  Success in the first playoff year set OSU up for a decade of things going their way, and conversely it has taken us the better part of a decade to climb out of that deep (self-dug) hole.

Michigan may be looking at an opportunity like that.  I love that people like Ackerman and Ono are out in front of everyone else on revenue sharing, because we need that next sea change to happen ASAP while Michigan is on the top of the mountain (or at least maintaining this high altitude we've enjoyed for the last few years).

Harbaugh's accomplishments to date make us talk about him being the "new Bo."  If he sticks around and Michigan comes out of re-alignment and revenue-sharing on top of the mountain, he could be the "new Yost."  That is what's on the table for him.

If they get this done and Jim is committed to staying at his alma mater for whatever duration they choose for a term, this will single-handedly take our program to a level I don't think any of us has ever experienced.  Recruiting will begin to take its course with no Harbaugh leaving distractions and our coaching tree will continue to be a revolving door but will remain at a level that is elite in college football.  Jim Harbaugh is the best coach this program can currently have and it is yet to be determined if he will finish as the best coach we have ever had.  We are going to have a lot of attrition at the end of this year, but we still have some studs coming back next year that I am positive Harbaugh can keep rolling with.  Please let this news be true and Go Blue!

Jim should remember his thoughts last winter: "Don't try to out-happy happy."

He's untouchable at U-M now, and can only add to his legacy from here on out.
