Also in 1986...

Submitted by readyourguard on

The basketball team grabbed its first outright title since 1986, which was my junior year at Michigan.

Know what else happened in 1986?

We got a new offensive coordinator. Moeller moved over from DC/LB coach to OC (yes, Bo still called the shots).  Lloyd went from DBs coach to DC/LB coach (along with Jim Hermann).

And?  We won the Big 10 title in the Harbaugh "guarantee we'll win" game as Matt Franz shanked a last minute FG attempt at the Shoe.  We went on to play Arizona State in the Rose Bowl.

Other OT happenings in 1986:

Chernobyl

Space shuttle Challenger explodes

Kentucky winner Ferdinand.  Also, Ferdinand Marcos flees Phillipines.

Oprah Winfrey show debuts on national television

Song of the Year: We are the World.

I not only know every one of those songs, but I can sing them (some of them in tune).  From 1985-1990 I spent every second of every summer swimming in my pool while 103.3 (Kalamazoo) played top 40 on loop.

Also during that time:   I wore out the following casettes (for the young kids:  a casette is a "tape" that has MP3 music inside of it):

-Mister Mister "Welcome to the Real World"

-Bon Jovi "Slippery When Wet"

Top Gun Soundtrack (i.e. - Kenny Loggins and Berlin)

-Bangles "Different Light"

Also, I am still in love with Suzzana Hoffs

Such a fun, fun team to watch and unfortunately the 86 team, despite it's #2 seeding - got knocked out by ex-coach Johnny Orr's Iowa State team in the second round.  This was the second year in a row Frieder didnt advance to the sweet 16 losing the year prior to the eventual national champs Villanova in the round of 32.

Rumors abound that one of the "issues" this team faced internally was their over-indulgance in a certain popular recreational drug that had recently become quite prevelant in sports nationwide.  But man oh man - when this group was on....they were ON!

Gary Grant and I had become casual buds and I thought he was a pretty cool cat. Butch Wade was also a very chilled out brother. He drove a big ole Lincoln Continental that drew a few raised eyebrows. When the team gathered at Liberty Street pizza, it was a fur coat convention. I always said the bball team marched to the beat of their very own drummer. It was such a contrast to how Bo ran his program.

Franz's missed field goal is one of my earliest memories of Michigan footbal.  Kolesar had a great game, if I can remember correctly.

I was playing with my toys as the game was on in the background... I remember stopping (probably setting up some attack formation with my army men) to watch that final kick.

I can still remember the joy I felt knowing that UM just beat Ohio State.... an "ah-ha" moment

Along with "Somewhere in Time" from Iron maiden! Also, I remembered reign in blood by Slayer, peace sells but who's buying by Megadeth, ultimate sin by Ozzy, turbo by Judas Priest and inside the electric circus WASP.

except for Michigan's big-time athletic programs. I'll take it.

Seriously, though, Chernobyl was, and continues to be, a horrible disaster. If your heart (no pun intended) can take it, Chernobyl Heart is an incredible documentary. Tragic.

passing within 12 nm of Sevastopol. Yorktown had been there before and done it before and they didn't like it too much and warned us off. When we maintained our track as was our international right, they pulled up along side and side swiped both USS Yorktown and USS Caron.

They did it on purpose, and it was a little tight there for an hour or so. Armed Hinds flying around us and a good portion of the Soviet Navy.

The back story is our CO and the Russian CO met years later in diplomatic roles and had a good time talking about the whole thing over a few drinks.

Anyway, this was my point: they didn't like us getting too close to their only warm water port, so they for damned sure aren't too keen on civil unrest in the vicinity threatening their winter access to the world. I am not surprised in the least by their response.

Chernobyl was made even more horrible by the way the Soviet Union cleaned up and sealed it. They calculated the maximum exposure an individual could take without dying in the short term, came up with the number of people needed to approach the core, pick something up or later place part of the seal, and then turned to the SSR's and provinces and demanded their proportionate share of people to participate. Many died. It is, of course, leaking now.

1986 was a pretty difficult time, though the domestic economy was taking off, near the end of that year we had Iran-Contra, and the sheen was definitely off the Reagan presidency by that point.  I graduated that year and applied to a phd program at Michigan, one bright spot for me.

was celebrating the 10 year anniversary of his Internet hit.  Unfortunately, it would take another 20 years for the Internet to actually discover and catch up with this classic.

Also, the centennial of the Statue of Liberty was that year.  As a native of New Jersey, I'm proud to say that even though the original islands remain New York territory their location is on the New Jersey side of the state line.

How could you mention Bill Buckner and not mention the Mets, 1986 World Series Champs?!

That was the year I bought my first, and last, Apple computer. I remember inserting, and re-inserting, floppy discs so I could just play a f------ game.

I believe it was also the birth year of LISTSERV, a forerunner of what everyone is doing here.

It was a great day for the finals of the state basketball tournament held in Crisler Arena that year.  The Class A final featured Michigan-bound Tery Mills' Romulus team  over Detroit Southwestern [wait -- I thought it was Derrick Coleman and Detroit Northern, but my memory apparently has misled me.  Perhaps that was the semi].  The Class B final featured a 70-ft buzzer beater that allowed Saginaw Buena Vista to beat Flint Beecher, 33-32.  Pretty sure Roy Marble played on that Beecher team.

Graduated high school in June and started my freshmen year at U of M that fall. What I remember most about that football season is being undefeated and ranked #2, I believe, and losing AT HOME to a fairly mediocre Minnesota team. Still stings to this day.

I went to the game expecting Michigan to blow out the gophers and stay right at number 2. Did not expect Foggy being a one man wrecking crew!  I think if the team was up for the game they would still have won it. It looked as if both the offense and defense were sluggish, just like they were going through the motions until it was too late!

When I saw RR team lose to Toledo, I knew they should have won but I knew that team did not have much talent on offense.

Buck Strickland hired me away from Jeans West and I started at Strickland Propane. Peggy and I got Lady Bird which loosened my urethra just enough to get Peggy pregnant with our first and only child, Bobby.

My wife and I had season football and basketball  tickets that year.  What a lot of fun.  Crisler was a much different environment in those days.  Much darker light-wise and not nearly as noisy for the most part.  I once saw some guy in the blue seats reading the NY Times during a game.  We were sitting in the blue seats behind the basket opposite the tunnel side, and actually were one of the loudest sections most of the time.  The center court areas were loaded with old people who sat on their hands the entire game.  After the Ohio State game ended late in the season, our section had cheered so loud, that Bill Frieder came up into the stands and thanked us - shaking a lot of hands including mine.  Pretty neat of him to do that.

Roy Tarpley was an All American Center on that team and Glen Rice was a freshmen playing big minutes at Forward.  Basketball team started 16-0, then lost to Minnesota.  They were #2 at the time.  Won Big Ten but lost in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournment to Iowa State, a year after losing in the second round to eventual champ Villanova.  They were Big Ten champs the year before also.  Good teams bu very disappointing NCAA performances.  The same school year the football team finished 10-1-1 with their only loss at #1 Iowa, 12-10.  That Iowa game was the most disappointed I have ever been watching Michigan Football.

Just because I was young. I started 1980 at 16 and ended the 80s at 26!  I got 2 BS degrees and started graduate school. I also left the state and have lived outside of Michigan since 1989.  I got to do a lot of stuff. If I were young in this day and age, I probably would be on my computer all the time!
