Also in 1986...
The basketball team grabbed its first outright title since 1986, which was my junior year at Michigan.
Know what else happened in 1986?
We got a new offensive coordinator. Moeller moved over from DC/LB coach to OC (yes, Bo still called the shots). Lloyd went from DBs coach to DC/LB coach (along with Jim Hermann).
And? We won the Big 10 title in the Harbaugh "guarantee we'll win" game as Matt Franz shanked a last minute FG attempt at the Shoe. We went on to play Arizona State in the Rose Bowl.
Other OT happenings in 1986:
Chernobyl
Space shuttle Challenger explodes
Kentucky winner Ferdinand. Also, Ferdinand Marcos flees Phillipines.
Oprah Winfrey show debuts on national television
Song of the Year: We are the World.
I started kindergarten that year. Good ole 1986.
a soph. in high school. I remember doing a spreadsheet on the computer for March Madness. In those days, Michigan could never get past North Carolina for some reason. Seems so long ago.....
Apparently someone familiar was just a year ahead of you guys...

We haven't won an outright Big Ten championship since 1986. I think @JustJMo was a junior in high school back then.
I was supposed to do those but I was too distracted playing Oregon Trail. . .
Top Gun
Danger Zone!
allow me to say...
but...but...Top Gun is only for NAVY pilots. See?
that's not even how the REAL Navy pilots dogfight, either.
"I CAN'T....LEAVE....MY WINGMAN."
Puuuke.
You mean they don't fly upside down and give the enemy pilots the finger during active engagements!?!
actually that part is true.
the polaroid!
that's classified.
How about those "MIGs" that were actually F-5s?
the MiG series is actually an odd numbered series, i.e. MiG 15, 17, 19...etc.
My whole point is that the TRUTH to that world is actually a lot cooler and more exciting than the movie made it out to be. They could have just made it a little bit more realistic and it would have been a lot better.
Hot Shots! was just as realistic as Top Gun? I had always had my suspicions.
Kent Gregory: "I'm cruisng at 500 feet"
Topper Harley: "I'm at 5th and Main".
/massive paraphrasing as I don't recall the exact quotes.
" Jim 'Wash Out' Pfaffenbach: I just got kicked out of the unit. My flight status has been withdrawn. I'm through, Dead Meat!
Pete 'Dead Meat' Thompson: What happened?
Jim 'Wash Out' Pfaffenbach: It's my eyes. I've got walleye-vision.
Pete 'Dead Meat' Thompson: Isn't there something that can be done?
Jim 'Wash Out' Pfaffenbach: Well, there's a delicate corneal inversion procedure... a multi-opti-pupil-optomy. But, in order to keep from damaging the eye sockets, they've got to go in through the rectum. Ain't no man going to take that route with me!"
was a Pfaffenbach!
But adding realism would have eliminated the tacked on love story with Kelly Mcgillis. Which leads me to another question: are active duty navy pilots allowed to date civilian contractors?
I hope so. The contractors is where all the "talent" is...ifyouknowwhatI'msayin.
Upvote to you sir for the info.
From what I've read, and this makes sense to me, getting real MiGs back then would have been impossible...so yea, wrong aircraft, but it kinda had to be that way?
Whaddaya expect? It was written by Jackie Epps, a Michigan State grad!
Actually Jack is a really talented and bright guy, was a friend in my teenage years and lived down the street on Strathcona in Detroit.
He succeeded in spite of the obvious obstacles he was forced to live with: good looks, wealth, and being very intelligent.
But he never flew jets.
DAMN RIGHT HE DIDN'T!!
I was finishing 2d year Michigan Law School (when the basketball team won the championship) and starting 3d year during the football season you mentioned.
Len Bias died suddenly that summer. I'll never forget that shock.
second grade at that point. Do you guys remember all the horrible jokes that came out after the challenger explosion? Back then it was all word of mouth, but somehow they spread like wildfire across the nation. It's crazy to me that Oprah started that long ago. Thirty years on TV is quite an accomplishment. I can only hope that our Football program finds itself this year, and our young guys start to gel on the offensive line. It all starts and ends with the big uglies. Go BLUE!!
Our class had Atilla The Hun for a teacher and wouldn't let us watch the launch. The other 3rd grade class had a cool teacher and they did watch it. I remember vividly one of my friends from that class meeting us out at the monkey bars and nonchalantly as talking about a sandwich saying "yeah, the shuttle blew up". He kept right on climbing like it was no big deal. Took me a while to realize how big of a deal it was based solely on his reaction. Weird stuff.
We were waiting in line to leave the classroom for lunch when another teacher came and told our teacher what had happened. The explosion happened at 11:38am, so it's possible this was just ~20 minutes later. One of the other sixth grade teachers had been in the running for Teacher in Space so that added to the impact. A very quiet lunch period. My best friend was immersed in Top Gun pilot space camp astronaut flagwaving patriotism at the time so he was particularly subdued.
and was working in Venezuela, teaching English. I remember I had just returned from work and the family I was staying with said "Hey, your shuttle just blew up." They didn't seem anywhere near as concerned as I was, but they were not unkind about it.
remember watching the space shuttle disaster over and over again on the TV in my apartment on Geddes like it was a week ago.
I remember watching it in my girlfriend's room in Bursley...
remember when Ferdinand won control of Kentucky.
I was still just a twinkle in my dad's eye in 1986.
Me too. *internet high five*
Aww yeah! Year of the Tiger/Wolverine.
The Muppets Temptation rendition was celebrating it's 10th year of existence?

Also, I was 2 months old.
That was 3rd grade for me. I remember as it if it was yesterday that our teacher had set aside time to watch the Challenger launch because she was pretty excited about the whole Teacher In Space idea even though no one in the Northville district was in the program, as I recall. In any case, our class sadly got to see the whole thing transpire live on ABC - I still remember that the live audio from Mission Control stopped soon after someone said, "negative contact and loss of downlink". Funny how little things like that stick with you.
I graduated high school.
"We are the World" was not the song of the year.
song of the millenium!
to all the hoops games back then. Loved watching that team. Back to back Big Ten Champs! (I graduated a few years earlier, but had friends still in school that hooked me up with tickets!)
On TV, Fox was just getting started, with their top show Married With Children. The Tracy Ullman Show would ultimately give birth to The Simpsons. ABC had a strong ratings lineup with Who's The Boss, Growing Pains, and Moonlighting. NBC really dominated with shows like The Cosby Show, Family Ties, Cheers, Golden Girls and Night Court. Dallas and Falcon Crest sustained CBS, along with Murder She Wrote and the stalwart 60 Minutes.
In motion pictures, Stand By Me, Top Gun, Aliens, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Platoon, Pretty In Pink and Crocodile Dundee were among top performers.
Many great albums from that year that did not get mainstream airplay, of course, but as far as hits went if I turned on the radio I was pretty likely to pop in a cassette after one or two songs. For every Sledgehammer we had two On My Owns. I pinched this from Billboard:
