Alabama G Nimari Burnett transfers to Michigan
Burnett was a top 40 combo guard who started his career at Texas Tech then transferred to Alabama and is now making his way to Ann Arbor

Sounds very talented. I am a little worried this is his third stop. I hope he can gel with the team because we could use his help

I could see why he might want to get away from Alabama...
March 30th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^
Why? Asking as I'm an extremely uniformed fan when it comes to recruitin. Why did he leave TT?
Hopefully Michigan can give him what he needs - and that he doesn't need much.
edit - answer is one post below!

Could be the murder.

Everybody murders
If one of my teammates killed somebody and another teammate brought the gun to do it with, I'm probably looking for new teammates.
So he’s not the best shooter on Alabama’s team?
Damn.
"Not everybody’s the perfect person in the world. I mean everyone kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me, whatever."

Alabama 6'4" combo guard. Was a role player off the bench for them this year.
Played in 27 games, 14.6 minutes. 37/32/78 shooting splits, for 5.6 points.
Was a McDonald's All-American, went to Texas Tech, transferred after a year where he was at the end of the bench (12 games, atrocious shooting), got hurt and missed 21-22.

After all the fake news on twitter (Hunter, Edey) I am hesitant to believe this.
If true, love it for guard depth. Need to have options to keep the team running smoothly.
Edit* No I don't know who Tipton Edits is, my dude, but Seth says it's true so I believe. Problem is he implies that Kobe is going to get the push to go pro, so seems like a net loss overall.

The tweet is from Tipton Edits, not some random account, and there's a link to an On3 story about it with quotes from the player my dude.
FYI - Tipton Edits does the graphics for all LOT of kids commitment announcements - not just Michigan .
Thus he/she probably has pretty good sources - i.e. the kid asking them to make the graphic --and must have a good record of not letting out news prematurely to have so many recruits/players trust them.
I believe they also create multiple graphics if the kid is still on the fence. They do great work.

What's the appeal on our end for a shooting guard who can't shoot?
“Michigan is the best place for me to thrive, offensively and defensively,” Burnett said to On3. “I’ve known coach Juwan Howard for a long time now, ever since I was a kid. I’ve always had a good relationship with him and I just felt it was the best place for me to be.”
Oh.

He is a good defender and if you can convince Kobe to come back there aren't that many minutes at the guard spots where you are getting an elite guy.
If this is the guy replacing Kobe its a step back for sure based on production to this point

Maybe he is more of an Isaiah Barnes replacement, but one who will see the court. Depending on skill level/development, maybe it provides Michigan with a bit more of the roster flexbility we had hoped for with Barnes.

Well stated, Think Burnett is a much more seasoned and experienced piece to play Barnes' role(or what I think the coaches hoped his role would be this year).

Right place right time?

If that isn’t a blast from the past lol. Hope he learns to shoot better. Wonder if this means anything for Kobe.
I would imagine this is the smoking gun for Kobe leaving. Why else would he leave Bama, just to just part time minutes elsewhere. He is coming to start...

Alabama was good at basketball this year.
Just not quite as good as SDSU

With a Nate Oats team he can always have the best talent and team and screw it up

I like this pickup
March 30th, 2023 at 11:48 AM ^
Well then! I know he has Chicago ties and Juwan recruited him heavy out of high school. But as far as impact this is on the Joey Baker level of transfers. Good for guard depth, but not anything that will swing the pendulum next season.
March 30th, 2023 at 12:14 PM ^
Completely disagree with you on this. What he can bring defensively far outweighs anything Joey could bring offensively. He will be a tough minded guard that Michigan has missed since Chaundee.
I think you are both right. This addition does not significantly change the outlook for MBB next season on the surface. However, adding a TALL guard with the ability and interest in playing tough D adds a dimension M has been lacking since Chaundee. Bigger bump if Kobe stays around obviously but probably a net + compared to Kobe on the Defense regardless.
This is a good piece added to a more complete roster

As much as we want to hate on Juwans in game coaching abilities he is having no problem getting good players to come play here. But you still have to win with these players otherwise its pointless. 2023-2024 will be a big year for Juwan
March 30th, 2023 at 12:16 PM ^
Burnett has not been good so far. Hopefully he can start to live up to the hype he had as a recruit. Still a stellar pickup if Kobe is gone considering his potential. Now get a proven 3/4 (or a couple) and next year isnt looking so bleak.
Maybe good is the wrong word. Athletes with high potential or highly ranked recruits
This was going to be my point exactly. Juwans problem has been with roster construction.
His recruits either tend to be one and dones who don’t develop quickly enough to help the team win in their first year, or tweener types who don’t have enough skill and/or athleticism to fill in the gaps. They also tend to overlap such that we have a glut of the same type of player and lack a true cohesion of skill sets.
March 30th, 2023 at 11:52 AM ^
Career 34.3% from the field and 29% from 3. Higher TO rate then assists (1.1 to .8).
One positive is he appears to have a good FT percentage, which tells me he is actually a good shooter who either takes bad shots or is forced to do too much.
I don't think this is what the team needs, but their is some severe upside if he can play in a system and under control.
March 30th, 2023 at 12:56 PM ^
Shooting guard = can't shoot
Point guard = lots of TOs
Umm...
Still better than playing forwards and wing players with poor ball handling in the backcourt.
We found a better guard than TWill!!
Poppycock, there is no guard better than TWill !
March 30th, 2023 at 11:52 AM ^
Nice to have a guard with some size. Won't have the crushing expectations here. If he learns to shoot, this could be good. Low-risk, high reward, IMO.
March 30th, 2023 at 11:53 AM ^
Hopefully his credits transfer in. Committing is just step 1 for transfers.

Let's hope this doesn't turn into another Terrence Shannon situation.
March 30th, 2023 at 12:09 PM ^
Right. Until he's completed his requirements and graduated this is definitely just a "commitment".
March 30th, 2023 at 12:29 PM ^
He's in a similar spot academically so that would be a concern. Shannon never got as far as committing to Michigan though so I do have some more confidence in Burnett ending up here.
March 30th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^
Boom! The Dug-Burnett-Tschetter-TWill-Hunter lineup will be top 3 in the B1G

I laughed

You know nothing RickSnow.gif.
There is a guy in a Michigan basketball facebook group (admin) that still thinks Michigan is the best team in college basketball. He cherry picks stats after every loss to show how great Michigan basketball is. Your post reminds me so much of him lol.
That guy must be 65 years old because nobody younger than that should be on Facebook
