Yes. It makes no sense when you consider Michigan's on field and player development success. Alumni base, education and brand recognition are elite as well. The fact that, in the end, top 100 players dismiss the wolverines is concerning. Eventually, this will weigh the program down. Pray that harbaugh never leaves.

“Going into the visit, my fam was heavily set on Michigan. Throughout the (Ohio State) visit they were really still set on Michigan. But towards the end of it, coach Johnson sat us down & went over an in depth plan that they had for me.”

lol "in depth plan" means gave him a huge bag of cash. I'm sure one little convo at the end of a visit would totally completely flip one's opinion. Johnson's "plan" hasn't worked for anyone since Chase Young

Looks like I was right

Johnson has three guys being mocked in the first round of next year’s draft. Mike Hall, Jack Sawyer, and Jaylin Tuimoloau. He’s elite, his track record speaks for itself, and Penn State should’ve done whatever was necessary to keep him.
People keep talking about $ like it’s still illegal. It’s not. If we want a top five recruiting class, we will have to buy it like everyone else. If we don’t, then this year is probably our last real shot at a national title. We might be able to knock off OSU with less talent, but we’re probably going to have to beat the top two SEC teams that are loaded with five stars once the playoffs expand to win a title and I just don’t know if we will have the depth to win 3-4 games in a row against superior talent.

That’s not necessary. We all know that the pay for play is illegal, but easily circumvented. NIL/Money is a part of every recruitment for big time programs now. If we aren’t mentioning it and discussing opportunities with our recruits, then no wonder why we are missing out on most of the elite talent we have pursued.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding and people are saying that OSU/Georgia/Alabama are still handing bags of cash to recruits, but I thought we were talking about NIL since it’s legal. It seems crazy to break the rules when there’s a perfectly legal way to offer cash once they are on campus. You don’t have to give it to them now, just let them know what opportunities exist for players of their caliber once they are enrolled and participating with the team.

Yeah, but then if there's legal ways to do it, then you can do more by doing it legal + illegal, resulting in a higher sum.

If they don't get paid until on-campus (which used to be illegal but now is legal), then you can pay a bit for the verbal commit, pay a bit for the visit (it's not like they don't already spend pretty for that, it's just now more direct, less proxy, and thus in some ways more honest and up-front), etc.

It might sound messy, but the truth is it was always messy, now at least the pretense is qualitatively different, so the quantitative part is a matter of degree as opposed to binarily off or on.

And then like that screenshot suggests, OSU's willing to overpay at this point, to stem the bleeding.

We demoralized their 5-Stars last year, and we demoralized their 5-Stars the year before that, we can do it again this year.

But the game will change after this year, when they go to the 8 or 12 (far too many, should be around 8 imo), the coaching and personnel will have to be far more dynamic and swiss-army knife-like gearing up for the expanded playoffs, as every game will prove less do-or-die than we are used to in CFB. So let OSU buy out their players for now because their DL coach seems to have lost touch with the game, all while Michigan does more with less and marches forward into whatever the hell wacky funhouse hellride CFB is going to turn into as we battle against classic Big Ten Conference Rivals such as....checks notes...UCLA and USC?!?!?

It is illegal for the schools to pay money to recruits so yes it is still illegal.   BUT I bet some schools have some fake NIL thing going for it is money directly from the school or boosters.  Boosters can give money to recruits but they can't be promised better seats or given special treatment for them giving the recruit money.

The tweet doesn’t even make sense. The quote says that Johnson is about to miss out on his top targets even with the NIL collective willing to over-spend, but the tweet is about them landing 5 star Justin Scott.
Also the quoted, but unnamed insider may not be the best source of information because they are expected to land top 100 DE Marquise Lightfoot tomorrow, crystal ball favorites for five star Eddrick Houston, and just received a few crystal balls for five star Dylan Stewart.
If landing three five stars and a fourth that’s in the top 100 is missing out, then I hope we miss out at every position.

5* requires seven figures.  It’s as simple as that.  OSU will do anything to beat Michigan, and they know how to throw money at recruits.  Hopefully our new NIL setup will help us catch up on the bag front, if we want the 5* athletes.

My guess (obviously need time to compile the data) is Elston > Johnson over the last 5 years or so in development.  I suspect more than actual development won the day for OSU.
Johnson has been underwhelming with the numerous 5* and high 4* recruits - especially the DTs where Johnson previously excelled.
The obvious question: what is different and better about their “plan”?

Only reason the last few recruiting misses feel bad is because they were in the positions we needed to have.  We need Secondary help and missing on an elite Dlineman always sucks.  Most kids get new cars when they go to Bama or OSU or other SEC universities.    I think at one point this article I was reading about  recruiting in the SEC said there were over 22 Dodge Chargers with rims in the Bama football players parking lot.  All brand new or late models EDIT ( TO Clarify what I said was taken from the article they were saying they were 2023 models or 2022 models as in new or the newer models. It could have been worded better but the point was how do all these football players all of a sudden can afford brand new cars with rims and subs in them?  They didn't get those cars until they came to campus).   It sucks be suse I don't want college sports to be about who can give the kids the most money to get them to play sports.  It is going to take away everything that was special and what made college sports more fun to watch than pro sports.

Justin Scott- originally trending for ND for a couple of months, then trending for UGA, and all of the sudden commits on a whim with OSU? Lolol 🤷🏽‍♂️

Wow…so osu just flipped the script and got Justin Scott and trends for Stewart all of the sudden. Seems they may have figured some things out.

Much like Wimpy UM FB will find that offering "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today" is an ineffective pitch to most people.

As bad as this one is, I’m still more concerned over our lackluster corner recruiting. Aaron Scott is most likely going to commit to OSU and there is nobody else on our board at the position.

Someone’s not getting the job done recruiting cornerbacks. I’m pretty confident in  Clink but if little Harbaugh is involved maybe that’s the problem. He’s coached so many positions. Good at coaching several positions but a master at none.

Someone is gonna get a bad grade in the recruiting department.

We are striking out left and right after all the visit hype.
