24/7's 2024 FB Recruiting Rankings Are Out: CJ Carr is No. 50 Overall, No. 5 QB
I can't see that this has been posted yet, but 24/7's initial 2024 football recruiting rankings were released today. I'm not sure which guys we're in on, but I did see that Saline QB C.J. Carr (Lloyd's grandson, Chad's brother) is No. 50 overall, the No. 5 quarterback and No. 1 in the state of Michigan. He's a composite five-star and all three of his crystal balls are to the team his grandfather coached.
CJ Carr is the grandson of a legend. And he just might be one himself one day. This is a critical recruitment. Thankfully his blood type is maize and blue (MB+), the universal wolverine recipient.
Family tradition to yank the program on the way out? No thanks.
Not sure where I saw it but apparently with Dante Moore leaning ND Carr may reclassify up a grade and be the UM QB of the future. Would absolutely suck to lose Moore but that is an excellent fallback plan.
Sam Webb talked about Carr reclassifying on a podcast recently and made it seem like an idea that made sense but hadn't been explored by either CJ or Michigan yet
I cannot imagine a kid reclassifying and being ready to play QB his freshman year...though it may make for a good learning/redshirt year.
If he graduated in '23, he'd be able to learn from JJ/Cade in the '23-'24 season (unless Cade transfers and JJ goes pro). Hopefully, he'd be ready to take the reins in '24 - I assume/hope this is the same plan as for Moore right now.
Losing Moore suggests that Michigan *has* (or has had) Moore in some way. Has he ever been a Michigan lean? Didn't he spend several childhood years in Ohio?
I mean Michigan offered him 2018, MSU offered him in 2020, and Notre Dame offered him in 2021 and we may be in 3rd place among those 3 schools, so yes, we absolutely are "losing" him given we were the first school to offer him by a large margin
I don't understand your logic. MAC schools are often the first to offer players that blow up in 11th/12th grade. Does that mean they "lose" all those guys when they commit to Power Five schools?
My question, again: Has he ever been a Michigan lean? (I honestly don't know.)
How about losing out on him instead of losing him. Is that semantically close enough for you?
That'll work. :)
MAC schools are often the first to offer players that blow up in 11th/12th grade. Does that mean they "lose" all those guys when they commit to Power Five schools?
That's a purposely disingenuous comparison and you know it.
Has he ever been a Michigan lean?
With Michigan being his first offer, Ann Arbor being right in his backyard, and Devin Gardner being his QB coach, yes, we were the favorites for a while
I disagree with your first point. Being the first to offer doesn't give a team any special claim on a prospect. That's why I mentioned MAC schools.
To the second, I've seen no clear evidence that Michigan was ever his favorite. Not getting him would be rough, yes, given his proximity and the Gardner connection.
Recruiting is about relationships. Offering a kid 2-3 years before his other main contenders gives you a huge advantage that we apparently haven’t capitalized on
Agreed very much on relationships. I also agree that getting out in front on high-level prospects as early as possible is a good idea.

Here's the problem: What if the seed isn't planted in fertile ground? Dante Moore spent part of his childhood in Ohio and was a big OSU fan at one point. (Not an issue now AFAICS ...) An early move becomes an *advantage* only when the target is receptive.
It's certainly possible that Michigan screwed something up here. (Wouldn't be the first time with this regime ...) I still haven't seen anything suggesting that Dante was ever firmly in the bag for Michigan.
Remember Logan Brown ( https://247sports.com/Player/Logan-Brown-45572566/high-school-181328/ )? Maizen and his friends squealed about that one incessantly using similar language ("Can't lose this guy!") when there was no clear reason to ever think he was a Michigan lean.
Michigan *lost* Xavier Worthy. I don't think that's the same as this situation.
Victor I respect your passion and high expectations but reality is nobody hits on 100% of their targets. The Michigan win rate has been impressive.
Some kids just have other ideas on where they want to go to school.
I’m sure Harbaugh and staff are doing everything they can to land both kids.
Well we definitely aren't 3rd. MSU is not in it at all.
Allen Trieu's recent breakdown asserted we were third behind ND and LSU, not MSU
If I had to pick one of Carr or Moore, I would choose Carr.
Why?
From the limited clips I have seen of both they each move well and throw with velocity and accuracy.
Disagree, Carr looks like a great prospect, but Moore has far better arm talent imo. I've always noticed that Carr's deep balls are underthrown in his camp highlights
My Chrystal Ball says this will end well.
Ah finally Paul Chryst reveals his MGOUsername
Hey, My fan approval rating is through the roof. Jack Coan be damned.
Since Dante Moore is looking less of a sure thing to Michigan now, landing Carr might take on even more significance.
I would definitely be disappointed if the best QB in decades from my alma mater doesn’t Go Blue…but CJ will cushion that blow.
It would definitely suck to lose Moore, but if we do I’d rather it be to ND than a Big Ten team we’d play every year.
Don't worry about a competitor. If Moore doesn't come to us, he will get swooped up by Texas A&M out of nowhere.
If we lose out on Moore, it's 100% our fault. We've been recruiting this kid for like 5 years and have had an offer out for 2 years more than MSU and 3 years more than Notre Dame
Uh, football players are human beings, not Tamagatchi.
That's like calling dibs on the hot girl at the party you saw first. Just because you were the first to notice doesn't mean she's going to pick you.
Recruiting is about relationships. We were the first in on Moore by a large margin and we haven’t capitalized
Being first to establish a relationship is obviously helpful, but it's not a guarantee that you're going to land a recruit.
Big time arm
Love that you cited Chad in the OP. Go C.J.!!
He's a composite five-star and all three of his crystal balls are to the team his grandfather coached.
Well don't leave us hangin, man!
/s
He's transferring to Westland John Glenn for his senior year.
7 guys from the state of MI ranked in the top 247. Closing on most of those would set up a nice foundation for the class to build from.
It would be really weird to see Carr go elsewhere if Dante Moore ends up committing to U-M. Landing both would be amazing though.
Feels like the kid named "Winowich" is a must get
Compare that to 2023 class with only 3 from Michigan in the top 247:
# 8 Dante Moore
#223 Jalen Thompson - CB'ed to MSU
#241 Amir Herring - CB'ed to Michigan
It would set up a battle, but different than Cade vs. JJ...maybe JJ vs. JJ?
Not surprising considering that he’s received extremely positive reviews after every camp or session he’s thrown it the past handful of months.
And you’d have to think Michigan would have to do something unimaginable for him not to end up in AA.
If they land Moore there is little chance C.J. would come here.
There's a dude named Winowich from Detroit Country Day at #181. Almost freaked when I scrolled past his name.
So pumped to see coach’s son in a Meeeshigan stadium
The state of Georgia is loaded. Seems like there is a kid from GA every 5 players.
Also, what is up with Ohio? Hardly any players in the early rankings.
Wait! I thought we had to recruit Ohio heavily if we ever wanted to win anything?
JJ was ranked as QB #5 as well IIRC. Hopefully CJ is as good or better!
Trivia: The WWW says that Dylan Raiola (#1 overall) is the son of former Detroit Lion and Nebraska Cornhusker Dominic Raiola.
It also says that Willis McGahee IV (#70) is the son of former NFLer Willis McGahee (presumably III).
I'd guess there are more than a few others with famous parents.
Yes please. Would like.
