2022 Recruiting Ranking - The "Schiano Effect"

Submitted by PerfectPair on April 23rd, 2021 at 1:20 PM

Yes, I am aware it is still "somewhat early" on the 2022 cycle, but I was shocked and disheartened to see RUTGER with the NUMBER 6 ranked recruiting class:

I know Schiano did a really good job at Rutgers previously, but wow.

I am sure there will be a gravitational pull back to the mean, but 2021 (41st - and Schiano's 1st class back at RUTGER was as high as 21st before dropping), 2020 (61st), 2019 (65th), clearly there is an uptick in Recruiting under Schiano (2021).

He so far has convinced 4 4-stars to come to or stay in the Garden State.

Maybe a sleeping giant has been awoken in the East?

Perhaps you missed this part:

"I am sure there will be a gravitational pull back to the mean, but 2021 (41st - and Schiano's 1st class back at RUTGER was as high as 21st before dropping), 2020 (61st), 2019 (65th), clearly there is an uptick in Recruiting under Schiano (2021)."

Or perhaps you missed the comparisons to previous classes.

You may not be impressed with 4 4-stars and 7 3-stars, but in 2019 AND 2020 as an example they had ZERO 4-stars.  4 > 0.

Signing day for 2022 for early entrants is December 2021.  Not that far off.

If you're going to make a post about the "Schiano Effect" then basically say "it's early and not actually that good" then why even post? Schiano was brought in to be a better coach than Ash and so far he's been better, but it's also not saying much

I never said it was actually not that good.  Perhaps you misread what I said, or misinterpreted my statements.

I acknowledged it was SOMEWHAT early but also acknowledged what he has been doing, which is markedly improve recruiting.

Did you miss the part about the trends?  65th to 21st last year is no minor thing, and he is trending to keep his class in top-20 which is unheard of since Rutger joined the B1G.

Thought that was pretty clear, but apparently not.

But they didn’t finish 21st last year. They finished 41st. Which 65th to 41st actually IS a pretty minor thing. Those classes are all virtually the same. Those classes are typically separated by getting an extra four star or high three star.

If we’re arguing Schiano is our recruiting lame-duck Chris Ash, then fine. Water is wet. Bears shit in the woods, etc.

He’s not actually doing anything amazing though, and certainly won’t maintain this ranking as players actually commit to other schools. Maintaining a top 20 rank isn’t that likely either. With their average recruit rank, assuming they maintain it, they’re more likely to finish in the mid 20’s than top 20

I’m not sure why you’re being negged. Yes, it’s a little premature (which you acknowledged in your post). It’s not like he has 20 low three star recruits. They have 11 commits and the average recruit ranking is .880 which is a top 20 type of class. We are talking about Rutgers. The perennial bottom dweller of the Big Ten East.

I think the point of what you’re saying is that Schiano is building some momentum and it’s worth keeping an eye on since they are in our division and are located in an area that we recruit pretty well. If so, I completely agree.

Yeah early signing period is pretty much here already. I’m sad Michigan is stuck with the number 16 class and didn’t manage to recruit half their needs, and won’t be signing half their needs. Too bad we are stuck with this 7 man class of commits. Wish the staff would pull their heads out of their asse/s.

It’s hardly even spring and plenty of kids are playing football seasons right now. It just snowed the other day. December is a long way off. Stop eating the paint chips

And Alabama!! They are ranked 12th! I never would have thought that in this( or any other) universe would Rutgers would out recruit an Alabama team that just came off a national championship! I guess it's over for Saban!

I think the Schiano Effect is like the Coriolis Effect where recruits get sucked into the Rutgers vortex and can't escape no matter how hard they try!

Their average rating is 88, not a representation of a rising juggernaut.  This is simply the result of having a few extra recruits early, nothing more.

A better title might have been, "Rutgers off to a decent start with Schiano...meh".

Seriously, recruiting rankings don’t mean much until everyone is signed. This happens every year as the blue chips tend to wait things out more as they have more options to mull over. They won’t finish anywhere near top 20 IMO but 4 4* is an improvement for them so I’ll give OP that.

Mediocre and getting better.

I'm not necessarily "nervous", per se.  However, we've plucked quite a few excellent players from New Jersey since Schiano left and he now seems to be placing a higher priority on "Fencing the Garden" again.

A solid to good Rutger isn't the best news for our East Coast recruiting.

Even average rating has its flaws. Can be skewed by a few outliers. Or in the case of a class being small, a single outlier. Michigan, for example, tends to take 2-3 fliers on low ranked kids that lowers our average a fair amount.

Go back to the 2019 class, Michigan finished with the #1 class in the B1G. Critics claimed this was simply because Michigan took more players than OSU and pointed to their average being higher. However, if you took Michigan’s top 17 recruits (which is the amount of players OSU brought in) then our average was actually higher. But due to Michigan bringing in additional players and some of those being lower ranked guys, it dropped our average below OSU.

To bring it all back around to Rutgers, Schiano goes and picks up a top 100 QB with a pretty unimpressive (for a top 100 guy) offer list and without him, that drops their overall rating to 149.55 (11th nationally) and their average recruit drops from 88.08 to 87.28. As you mentioned, mediocre.

I'll wait for the translation to games before seeing Rutgers as a threat. It will take a long while to forget 77-0. Like... decades I think.

Did he actually go for two? I remember the play, and it seemed like it was an audible of sorts by the players that they were coached to execute when faced with a specific (empty middle) look.

They lined up as if they were going for the XP.

I'll wait for the translation to games

I took 2 overtimes for Michigan to beat them last year. Blowing off a program that played Michigan neck-and-neck last year is a very Michigan thing to do.

Just like how Indiana wasn't a threat til they were.

Your hyperbole is noted.

Apparently recruiting trends that indicate improvement AND can potentially impact UM recruiting are of no concern to you.

Excellent work commenting on something you don't seem to care much about.  Kudos.

Dude, it was a joke and wasn't even directed at you.

But in any event no, I am not really concerned about it's effect on UM recruiting. Unless Rutgers *really* turns things around and/or UM tanks, I don't see us losing too many head-to-head battles against them. Do you?

Rutgers is going to have a raised floor with this kind of recruiting. The more impressive thing is they managed to land high 4 star QB Gavin Wimsatt out of KY. That can really help a class. But still long way to go to fill out the rest of the class.
