2018 OL two-deep?

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

OK, so this seems like a worthwhile distraction at this point... what do you think will be the make up of the Offensive Line two-deep?

Drawing from the following depth chart-by-class pool:

Freshmen

Sophomores
(c/o 2021)
Juniors
(c/o 2020)
Seniors
(c/o 2019)
OT
OG
N. Rumler '19
A. Vastardis*#

C

Replacement(s) required for exiting seniors: Mason Cole (LT), Pat Kugler (C). Despite his level of performance, it doesn't seem like UM can afford to not give JB-B a fifth year. Here's my SWAG, which leaves Bredeson at OG to bring Filiaga up at OT, but YMMV:

Starters
Backups
OT
G. Newsome
C. Filiaga
J. Bushell-Beatty
A. Stueber
OG
M. Owenu
B. Bredeson
S. Spanellis
J. Runyan Jr.
C
C. Ruiz
(a starter from above)?

It's looking like early playing time may be a key factor in securing Emil Ekiyor in the upcoming recruiting class.

I would not include newsome as a starter, he just started walking, running, rehab, I don’t think he would be performing at an elite D1 level in 9months

I don't think he will ever play a game. I respect the hell out of him for trying and think it is definitely what he should do if he has the heart for it. He had a limp and looked to be a little unsteady changing direction just walking. He looks great running in a straight line but I question his ability to move laterally as a LT.

Newsome is out until proven otherwise.

His knee injury was catastrophic. How many surgeries did they say he had? 30? That's insane.

Now if it was to fix nerves and arteries, then his performance may recover 70-90%, but if it was for a meniscal root, PCL, muscle/tendon repair, then it's highly questionable if he can ever play again, but for his mental health and for morale it is great to keep him on.

As someone who's suffered two major orthopaedic injuries (sking and car/front-windshield accident) and spent years recovering and returning to exercise/daily living, I'd L-O-V-E nothing more than to see him return.

But because we don't know the specifics of the injury (besides the 30ish surgeries he said he had), it's not clear what he'll be able to do. And the two data points we have are the video (which look like a global cruciate ligament tear) and the 30 surgeries quote.

Love to see it, but I think it's more wise to count him "out" until stated otherwise, rather than "in" until stated otherwise.

The first 2 recuiting classes (2016 + 2017) also a whiffed on a few top OL reruits that commited elsewhere (with some now quality starters) as well. Would have liked to see a few more OL and few less WRs.

this year, but if you're still blaming him in year four of the regime...you clearly have no clue.

This staff took 0, that's right ZERO OTs in the 2016 class, and only 3 TOTAL OL, despite having a 28 man class, and knowing that it was the primary position of need.  We elected to take just as many TEs (!!!) depsite the position only fielding 20-40% of the players at any given time and despite already having Ty Wheatley, Ian Bunting and Zach Gentry on the roster.

I have very few beefs with this staff, but they are too obsessed with blocky-catchy types, especially when they have so many on the roster they can't even get many of them (who would be fine starting, but don't because of the existence of the others) snaps or routes.

Feels about right. Could see JBB taking one of those tackle spots.  Scariest thing about your lineup though is that OL is FR (RS)* / JR / SO / JR / FR (RS).  That sounds like a recipe for sadness.

*Stueber actually played on special teams the first game of the year for some damn reason, so he would technically be a sophomore. But I'm sure they'll get him reclassified due to some "injury" and a medical redshirt

According to Michigan’s official site he played on special teams vs. Florida. And that’s the only note they have for him. And unfortunately one dumb play on special teams counts as a burned redshirt. Although like I said, they’ll probably claim he got “hurt” and missed the season with injury to get him a medical redshirt.

That looks a lot closer to right than Newsome coming back as a starter. The only difference that might happen is Runyan taking an interior spot. Ben would be pushed out to right tackle and then it would be a battle between the two young guys for the LT spot.

My goodness... now Filiaga is a OG  ?   I guess the new strategy is to recruit only OG and no OT.  Every time they'd get a OT recruit, I'd hear....oh he is better slated to G.    So far... Hall, Filiaga, Hongiford, Spanellis....    And to think we paid good money for a personnel employee...

we have at least one, probably two TEs that would be better suited as OTs, but we don't switch them over.  Frey even has a history of turning more athletic guys and TEs into OTs.  I'm shocked that hasn't happened yet.

I do think James Hudson has all the tools to be a great OT.  We'll see if he can put it together and how long it'll take.

Also, not that surprised CF is moving to OG.  His recruiting profile suggested as much.  Not good in pass pro, no kick slide, better with his hands on a guy moving his feet, etc.  And if that's the case, he won't see the field until Bredeson or Onwenu are gone.

We've got Hall, Stueber, Spanellis, Honingford, Ruiz, Runyan, Filiaga, and maybe James Hudson on the bench now with another year to get better (odds are they're young enough to do so). That's a lot of raw material for Frey and Drevno (if he stays) to whittle into a couple good players. Onwenu and Bredeson will likely improve as well, even Ulizio (although maybe not at tackle). JBB is the only guy that's probably hit his ceiling. They might not be dominant, but the woe is me pessimism is not warranted.

The football gods really hate us. If newsome doesn't get injured, we probably win the b10. Speight gets injured,Black, and we lost to MSU... All this while fucking jt Barret has been at osu for decades running around and barely getting injured... Fuck man.

All American... Jon Jansen or Steve Hutchinson type in that 2 - deep....

..at least not for next year....

throw in a possible first year starter at QB or a limited ability Speight and recipe for mediocrity continues... sign..

Is filiaga hurt? We've seen runyan in a couple times this year. And with RT being weak we never say him. But when runyan was in it looked like he made the most of his snaps. He helped with a huge hole and score against Purdue. Owenu is a monster but needs to shed a lot of weight cuz he's slow. He can't ever recover.

No idea on Newsome's prognosis. But the second team OL in practice right now is Filiaga Ruiz Spanellis Runyan Ulizio from left to right. I have no idea what we will do at tackle next year but we have a solid number of guards and centers with bredeson, onwenu, ruiz, runyan, and spanellis returning
