2018 OL two-deep?

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

OK, so this seems like a worthwhile distraction at this point... what do you think will be the make up of the Offensive Line two-deep?

Drawing from the following depth chart-by-class pool:

Freshmen

Sophomores
(c/o 2021)
Juniors
(c/o 2020)
Seniors
(c/o 2019)
OT
OG
N. Rumler '19
A. Vastardis*#

C

Replacement(s) required for exiting seniors: Mason Cole (LT), Pat Kugler (C). Despite his level of performance, it doesn't seem like UM can afford to not give JB-B a fifth year. Here's my SWAG, which leaves Bredeson at OG to bring Filiaga up at OT, but YMMV:

Starters
Backups
OT
G. Newsome
C. Filiaga
J. Bushell-Beatty
A. Stueber
OG
M. Owenu
B. Bredeson
S. Spanellis
J. Runyan Jr.
C
C. Ruiz
(a starter from above)?

It's looking like early playing time may be a key factor in securing Emil Ekiyor in the upcoming recruiting class.

Bredenson has easily been better than Onwenu to me. I'd like to see Onwenu come in around 330 next season. He's very limited at his current weight. Team won't be much better next year unless we get a good QB and the O Line is better. Kugler and Cole leaving is going to mean our line is potentially worse next season.

Through 5 games I graded I have a slight edge to Owenu but I also have Owenu improving and Bredeson is not. You are right about his weight. He needs to shed at least 15lbs.

It's a very scary thought to think our OL could be worse next year but you are right. When you know OL is a major weakness you need to scheme for that. Hopefully our staff will do so. This year we have not.

optimistic about the OL improvement next year if a few things go favorably: Onwenu gets in better shape, Bredeson adds a little more power, Ruiz lives up to his potential, Steuber or Hudson can man LT. A year of experience and S&C will make a big difference for the inside guys.

LT- Stueber vs Hudson vs Newsome LG- Bredeson / Spanellis C- Ruiz / Runyan RG- Onwenu / Runyan RT- JBB vs Filiaga vs Stueber Interior could be elite, tackle will be a question mark again.

I know that his lack of strength was a concern coming in but he enrolled early and everyone was taking about how atheltic he was.  Still too early to even make the 2 deep?  He's got the height and athleticism to be a tackle.

I know it's never a great idea to count on a freshman to start on the OLine, but IF he's an EE and ready to go would it make sense to put Okiyor at LG and move Bredeson out to tackle?

Why does it feel like Newsome is OT sized, based on traditional Michigan standards, and the others we have, are not. Cole should not be playing LT...what a fail by two coaching staffs.

And Runyan is a OG, and Honigord I think is a OT, is he not?

If they keep Pep and Frye, then they have to get more athletic at tackle. Onwenu isn’t even a sure thing because he really struggles with the zone blocking schemes. I believe both tackles will be from this most recent recruiting unless they move Bredson over. Expect 3 out of 5 starters to be underclassmen next year.

Ruiz probably is center with Spanellis or Ekyior backing him up.

If Bredeson kicks out to tackle then I think JBB (with a 5th year?) and Ulizio enter the fall as 1 and 2 at the other spots. I think Honigford or Steuber wins in the end.

Ulizio could slide into the other guard spot opposite Onwenu however Runyan, Ekyior, or one of the other RS Freshmen interior guys could make more sense.

Penciling Newsome in as a starter is as nuts as all those who were hoping Antonio Bass was going to be able to come back. Newsome almost lost his goddamn leg. The only rational expectation is that his football career is done, and anything we do get out of him is gravy.

For that matter, the same assumption should be made with regard to Speight.
