Unverified Voracity Is Whatever About Suspension Comment Count

Sponsor note. Hey, folks: Tom Brady is on the hunt for the biggest Michigan fan other than Seth. We posted a set of trivia questions from Autograph a few weeks back and we're back for more. First, check out the Leaderboard from round one, which we'll be updating all year.

Then hit up the second set of trivia questions, which we'll be posting weekly through the end of September. Our friends at Autograph and Valiant will offer access to purchase unique rewards and experiences throughout the season based on your performance and participation.

This set of trivia questions closes Friday at 5 PM, so get on it.

I mean, whatever? I suppose I have to dredge up an opinion about Michigan self-imposing a three-game gameday-only suspension on Jim Harbaugh. Here goes: darn it.

The only part of this that matters is that it might piss off Harbaugh to the point where he gets more serious about going to the NFL. You or I could coach Michigan against ECU, UNLV, and… whoever is the last nonconference opponent. Ah. Bowling Green. Anyway: you or I could guide Michigan to three wins in those games. (Mel Tucker, on the other hand…)

So on one level it's smart to get this junk out of the way now because Texas, an actual power conference opponent, is on the schedule next year. On another level it's deeply annoying to cave to an NCAA kangaroo court that is busy violating its own guidelines because of what's clearly a personal vendetta against a coach who can't be bothered to pretend they're relevant anymore. There's a lot of sturm und drang on the message boards about this because of the latter, but… this does not matter. Michigan's chances of success this season have not been altered even 0.01%.

So, whatever. Double whatever.

[After THE JUMP: OSU's got an issue or two]

Trouble in paradise? Michigan had a quarterback battle go into the season last year, but that was a guy who'd won the Big Ten getting passed by JJ McCarthy. This one seems a bit more ominous:

This is a bit sunnier take from Day than his previous comment on the QB battle:

"I don't think it's right now we have two guys who are just blowing it out of the water and you're like 'Oh my God, I don't know who's gonna play,'" Day said. "But it's also not like they're not doing well either...Now, were just looking for the consistency."

Seems like whoever it is will be a major step down from CJ Stroud. Here's to seeing OSU's offense outside of the SP+ top ten. Or at least somewhere other than first.

The pads go on. Jadyn Davis experienced a steady slide over the course of shorts-and-skeleton season. But maybe he's one of them gamer guys:

Providence Day looked the part of No. 1 team in North Carolina in a 42-35 victory over Northwestern (SC) on Saturday night. Providence Day held a commanding 42-21 lead with eight minutes left in the game and Northwestern scored two late touchdowns. …

Providence Day was led by outstanding performances by 4-star Michigan quarterback commit Jadyn Davis and 4-star North Carolina wide receiver commit Jordan Shipp. Davis' final stat line was 24 completions of 35 attempts for 456 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions.

A fair chunk of this highlight reel is Davis doing stuff:

Anonymous NIL takes. On3 has series of anonymous coach quote articles, which are always pretty interesting. This one focuses on how NIL has affected college basketball recruiting:

A Coach in the Big East: “The ‘process’ begins (and almost ends) with the financial benefit of the school. If it was even part of the process, it was nearly last (or non-existent) pre-NIL. The money/NIL has no equivalent now in the process, and there is almost no way to overcome a substandard ‘offer.’ …

A Coach in the A10: “NIL has significantly changed how we recruit. If we know early on that the decision is all bout money, we may choose to move on. We have a solid collective; however, we don’t think we want to ‘outbid’ anyone. We think our program’s history and the university have a lot to offer; unfortunately, a lot of kids, agents, and advisors only care about the bottom line. I think recruiting is mostly about two things, 1) role definition and 2) NIL, “Will I play and how much will I get paid?

“I think the common thought in college is you want to get old and stay old. But I think there’s a valuable opportunity for mid-majors to get slightly better talent than before the portal era. I believe you take the guys that can help you win. They can come from a local high school or be playing 4.000 miles away if they can help you and fit your culture, you take them.”

I assume this is less drastic of a change in football since there are fewer football recruits who are obvious program-changers than in basketball, what with 85+ man rosters versus 13. I do agree with "get old and stay" old after Michigan's experience with Moussa Diabate, Caleb Houstan, Jett Howard, and Frankie Collins. In all four of those cases Michigan spent a bunch of minutes developing substandard players* only for all of them to bolt. They're probably going to get more out of Nimari Burnett than any of them.

*[This may be somewhat controversial but Michigan was ~7.5 points better per 100 possessions with Howard off the floor last year, and Howard was probably the best of the four.]

Football is back soon, and it brings with it Indiana Signmaking. Say what you want about the Crossroads of America, but never say they can't apply pigment to a large piece of cardboad:

They'll always have that, and when you have signs who needs bowl bids?

Etc.: Proposed prices for first round playoff games next year have yet to find a broadcaster because the prices are sky-high. CBB burnout at all time high. McCarthy, Zinter, Jenkins, Corum, Edwards make Dane Brugler's top 50 prospects for the upcoming draft.

Unfortunately I have a lot of see it to believe it with them after seeing their 3rd string QB come out and beat us a decade or so ago. So much talent, it'd be nice to see a struggle.

I also want them to do well and lose to us and lose in the playoff, and put pressure on them to fire a coach who is winning 90+% of his games only to make a completely horrible hire, that causes them to struggle a little bit as Michigan continues its football dominance under Harbaugh into a smooth transition into his replacement he's been grooming for years.

I understand the thought of firing Day if he loses three in a row to Michigan was slim and silly (fans are nuts) but there is no chance they fire him when he's leading the nation with the most 5* recruits in the country. This week they just pulled their fifth and he's from Georgia. It's crazy to me the amount of talent they are pulling in this class...so glad we've seen Michigan crush them the last two season.

They are rallying the “recruiting efforts” to shore up Day’s status. OSU is a win-at-all-cost program, so 2 in a row to UM and the threat of slipping from the elite are anathema to OSU.

Beyond the reasons/methods for the recruiting wins, their class is very impressive and quite strategic. They no only added elite talent but they went all in on Aaron Scott and Justin Scott, who were supposedly UM leans and key pieces in the UM class.

Agreed about Harbaugh being annoyed by the suspension and thus having an increased willingness to interview with more NFL teams. This is troublesome as you cannot easily replace a Jim Harbaugh.

I don't really think it will annoy Harbaugh as much as others think. Is it annoying? Yes. But Harbaugh has always been vocal about how many future HCs he has on staff and this gives them an opportunity to show some things. Harbaugh can still coach practices and this suspension during 3 cupcakes should put all of this to bed

The stupid thing (aside from the NCAA itself) is that the NFL isn't without its own ludicrous dysfunction.  The dude already fled the NFL once.

By and large, professional athletics (and let's be real: college football is a pro league) are run by aristocrats.  If you can't stand being moshed around by petty, entitled, imbecilic psychopaths, you're going to struggle wherever you are.  Heck, come to think of it, youth leagues are polluted by these sorts.  He might as well stick to college if he wants to coach.

Coaching football without dealing with industrial quantities of bullshit?  Doesn't exist anywhere.  You'd have to switch to something like women's curling to find inner peace, and I'm not even too sure about that.

I can't say I'm surprised about the burnout among college basketball coaches.  They were already dealing with one-and-dones, and now the portal takes things to another level.  The offseason calendar could be reworked a bit, but even if the NCAA creates more mandatory dead periods, there's still going to be the stress of potentially having to revamp your roster (and protect it from being poached) every offseason.

OSU's offense will be "fine" this year regardless of who's at QB because much like UM they can out-talented 9/10thd of the opponent they'll see pretty handily.  But I do think both Brown and McCord were going to be a step down from Stroud even at the top of their projections and now it's clearly going to be a bit more.  It'll be interesting to see if the lean into the run more early on or if they try to fake it til they make it in the air.

My general feeling about NIL talk with basketball is that it really only matters to a subset of guys because at some point you're only going to get so much of an offer.  Sure, if you're a top-50 guy you might be able to command a bit more of a bidding war but some 3.5* from suburban KC isn't likely to be a program changer early on and smart teams will instead (a) try to recruit those guys and build them up over years or (b) just pluck them from the transfer portal after a year or two.  In fact, I wouldn't be shocked in CBB starts to look a bit inverse, with a bunch of small programs having a number of 1- and 2-and-transfers while the bigger programs have older rosters with some young studs and then a bunch of guys who've stuck around the college game a bit.

There's less value in getting first-year guys who just haven't developed as much now, and as we saw with Howard you can wind up with a guy who does one thing really well (shooting) and not much else and you're stuck having to play him because you can't really develop those areas in-season.  Better to get those guys a year or two later with lower ceilings on any particular skill but overall more complete players.

The punishment for Harbaugh is whatever; the NCAA comes across as feckless so often that while I'd like UM not to give them a win it's unlikely to mean much.  I do think Harbaugh will be heavily eyeing the NFL this offseason; we'll see if anyone bites but at some point a bad team with a desperate owner will throw money at him to fix their problems and he'll jump.

I'm sure that Brian and many others here know more about this than I do, but the voluntary suspension doesn't bother me. It sounds like Michigan concedes that there were technical violations, and while it's infuriating that there's one standard for Tennessee and another for us the reality is that in many regulatory environments 5-10 violators go unpunished for every one who faces consequences.

Now if NCAA asks for anything more (or anything more than one additional inconsequential game) I think Michigan should challenge that in every way possible including ignoring any "gag" orders.

To be fair though, if we're looking at the apples-to-apples comparison (i.e. penalties for the coaches), did Tennessee get a different standard? It's not like Pruitt got off scot-free; he got a six-year show-cause penalty, and a number of other coaches/staffers got penalties as well (including show-cause). Where there might be a different standard would be the penalties for the schools--Tennessee itself got off pretty easy, when they should have gotten absolutely hammered. Now if the NCAA comes back and tries to vacate wins, impose bowl bans, that kind of shit, then it's time to bring up the double standard...

I've never really considered the Harbaugh is going back to the NFL chatter as credible, but recent events may have slightly changed the circumstances. He's been scrutinized rather heavily over minor issues so it would be understandable if he feels there isn't much hope for the state of the game in CFB and heads back to the NFL where the playing field is somewhat level. Nick Saban and Urban didn't look so great when they had a salary cap and only 1 first round pick.

Harbaugh is gone to the NFL the second a team interviews him and has a top 5ish franchise QB or the top draft pick with a supposed "generational" QB in the draft.  Until this happens, I don't see him leaving.  The good thing about this is teams with top 5ish franchise QBs usually have a coach that is not getting fired anytime soon and choosing a QB high in the first round can be quite the crapshoot.

This kind of thing seems particularly relevant for an OSU program that Ryan has basically made into a turbo passing team. They're not great on defense. They're not great at running the ball. If your whole identity is super reliant on being prolific at passing, you'd better find a good QB for that.

Now, like Michigan, will any flaws really matter for 90% of the season? No, but for a fanbase that expects to beat Michigan and win national titles sometimes, I don't think Day is building a very balanced program which may be his undoing eventually

CompleteLunacy

August 24th, 2023 at 2:09 PM ^

It won't matter for the majority of the season, but there will still be games here and there I will be interested in seeing how OSU handles. The ND game is early in the season. In October they play Maryland (tough opponent, especially earlier in the season when Taulia is healthy), at Purdue (OSU's kryptonite), Penn State, and at Wisconsin. I think there's a decent chance they lose at least one of those 5 games. At the very least it will NOT be a cakewalk.

The basketball comment is so on point...the best year of Howard's tenure had older players -- Chaundee and Mike were great finds, Eli and Livers were grizzled but poised, and the talented youth filled in.  Franz may have been a sophomore but he'd already spent years playing old man ball in Europe.

I'm looking forward to this year with more seasoning and athleticism on the roster.  Remember, it took JB a few years to build rosters of his players, and while he dealt with players leaving earlier than they should have, he didn't have the massive roster upheaval of NIL.  I think Juwan (like Harbaugh) will soon find his best talent mix and start to redirect the program arc.

It seems like with the playoff games not finding a broadcaster and the PAC-12 not getting a deal, we might be at an inflection point with rights fees. It will be interesting to see if the B1G and SEC can keep getting their deals going forward. There's a limit to everything.

AZBlue

August 24th, 2023 at 1:17 PM ^

First of all I hope the Playoff rights $$ continues to be an issue as that is mainly a NCAA cash cow ala the hoops tourney -- because screw the NCAA.

I do think that there will be a "right-sizing" of TV payouts because the rush to grab the only programming that people will consistently watch live - aka Sports - has led to a lot of TV networks making poor financial decisions.

However - I think this will affect "lower quality" offerings faster and harder.  I.E. --  Not an NBA fan but, I don't think NBA regular season games drive enough viewership/ad revenue to justify the $2.66B per year payout by ESPN - no matter how many Laker or Warriors games they show or hours of analysis shows designed to piggy-back off game viewership.

High End CFB (and the NFL) will remain the most valuable assets to any TV provider but the rise of Friday games and Night Games show the strain the TV folks are having finding enough hours of programming to fit in all the ads they need to sell.  Therefore Brian's desire for soccer style ads during play isn't going to happen....unless it is in addition to the current ad load.

I would guess that things like MAC football etc. are probably much more profitable to the networks going forward when you compare the costs to the relative revenue -- maybe ESPN overpays for the SEC deal because sickos like many of us on MGo would stick around after "our" game just to watch more football once we are already tuned to ESPN.

Last thought -- with the (relative) return to financial sanity we have seen from the Tech giants recently I think there is less of a threat of price pressure on TV providers --i.e. Amazon or Google offering to hugely overpay for rights just to drive traffic.

It seems like with the playoff games not finding a broadcaster

This should be clarified: ESPN has the rights to all the quarterfinal and semifinal games and the final.  The rights to four first-round games are currently up in the air, and apparently the CFP is currently asking "exorbitant amount" for them ... but it's safe to assume they'll reach a deal.

As for the Big Ten, as long as 15-17 million people are going to watch the Game, it will be worth a lot.

A Coach in the Big East: “The ‘process’ begins (and almost ends) with the financial benefit of the school.

I didn't need a Big East coach to tell me this. It became blatantly clear when in a matter of months the first and only schools top basketball recruits were taking official visits to were SEC schools that have zero basketball pedigree

The thing about the Michigan/OSU game is that any first-year starter is VERY experienced by the time the Game rolls around.

My theory is that the two teams’ play styles gives OSU a learning curve advantage. They are very much a “every down is 1st and 10 and our strong preference is to pass” team…meaning that the QB has had a LOT of reps with the full playbook.

Contrast that to Michigan, where the offense will be shut down as soon as the win is “clinched” in Harbaugh’s mind. I do NOT subscribe to the “holding back the good plays for the big opponents” theory - year after year we see that that isn’t the case - but a newbie Michigan QB has played a lot less football by The Game.

Interesting, because I would actually argue the past two years have shown that Michigan finally demonstrated a willingness to plan specific wrinkles for the OSU game that paid big dividends in high leverage moments: The Henning TD sweep (set up by Edwards' bevy of receptions in the Maryland game), the 2021 flea flicker, the Mullings pass to Loveland, etc.

Would be great to see this continue as long as Michigan can take care of business against the rest of the schedule. Have to think they'll need to get a bit creative against PSU on the road, though.

I can't remember for sure, but I feel like somebody (maybe Seth or Brian) noticed that Michigan used a lot of routes and WR hijinks that they hadn't shown all season which is partly why the safeties for Ohio State were so bamboozled.  Apparently, they kept a large portion of the passing playbook in the shed, only pulling it out in Columbus.  In fact, I think Sherrone said at one point that they had even more stockpiled that they never even got to use because the base plays were already devastating their defense

What was the over/under on the number of years Harbaugh would coach at Michigan when he was hired? At the time he said he wanted to be here for a long while but his prior success coaching in the NFL meant that if he restored Michigan to elite status he would get another NFL coaching opportunity.

I don't know that the NCAA nonsense will alter his thinking about leaving for the NFL; I think by the end of this season he will have achieved pretty much everything he set out to do at Michigan (especially if they win the National Championship).

The word was that if he got an offer after either of the last two seasons he would have taken it. After this coming season it seems even more likely that there will be NFL interest and that, once again, if he gets an offer he will accept it. Thankfully if and when that happens we have Sherrone Moore ready to step in as an internal hire and proceed as we are--as an elite program.

I'm not sure why so many UM fans seem excited about the prospect of Moore taking over as head coach at Michigan.

Moore has no head coaching experience which, to me, should automatically preclude him from consideration to be the HC at Michigan. UM is far to good of a program to be rolling the dice on a first time head coach. I would even balk at hiring a guy with head coaching experience at a team in a group of five conference.

rice4114

Moore is our best chance to keep this going. I would take 90% of what we have now vs all of Rich Rod or Hoke. Give me Moeller(bad HC record) and Carrs (no HC exp) track record over those two jokers. I don’t want new I want this extended until the end of time. Our assistants are what is making this program hum right now (thanks to coach Harbaugh) let’s bump them all up and not try something new.

Met some broncos fans this summer and they're convinced Harbaugh was offered the job and preferred over Sean Payton because the need to trade for Sean from the saints. The fans were excited about Harbaugh more than Payton. I don't think this was a Vikings situation where they were uninterested at the end.

My take on the OSU quarterback battle is that Ryan Day always drags these out even if he has a guy in mind. Maybe he's telling the truth this time. But the context of his quotes with limited chatter online does suggest to me that the overall level of play is going to be a modest stop down from Stroud

I still think whoever starts is gonna be the All-Big team QB though, along with JJ

I think their OT situation is far more dire than their QB one, personally

Here's hoping their tackles are half-cyans and their QB is just a guy
