What just happened (TL;DR): Michigan was shut out at the Frozen Four for the first time ever. BC’s stars came to play, contributing on all four goals. Will Smith had two. Cutter Gautier and Gabe Perreault each added another one. Ryan Leonard added an assist. Frankly, Michigan didn’t play badly, they just made too many mistakes against the best college hockey team I’ve ever seen. While certainly disappointing, it wasn't really unexpected. This BC team is awesome.

Forward Notes.

-Numbers don’t tell the story of this game. Michigan had fancy corsi and shot totals, but I can remember like three good scoring chances at even strength. BC got the lead early, added to it, and then finished the game in the third. Once they were up three (and four), they just sat back in their phenomenal defensive structure and handled everything Michigan threw at them. Their elite talent made plays and got them the lead, so they didn’t need volume attempts or to take many chances all evening.

-Michigan’s Hero Line and Second line (Dylan Duke, TJ Hughes, and Garrett Schifsky) did create some chances throughout the game. They forechecked fine and did turn the Eagles over at times. They just couldn’t beat Jacob Fowler. Part of that was just missing the net with their chances. It was also not getting enough dangerous ones. Finally, Jacob Fowler was really good, and honestly made it look pretty easy. The Wolverines needed a subpar performance from Boston College. Instead, they got an A level effort and performance. It was always going to be tough to beat that.

-Alex tweeted about this, but I was noticing it as well. BC’s defense is just awesome. They’re so well-drilled and organized defensively. It seemed that every time Michigan would make a couple of nice passes to get a decent look, an Eagle moved into position and blocked the shot or got his stick in the passing/shooting lane. Offense is fun, but it does appear that once again, defense does win championships. This is the next step for Michigan to take. Look at how BC can still skate, pass, and score…but still be extremely defensively sound, protecting their goaltender.

Defense Notes.

-Michigan’s in-zone defense was actually pretty good on Thursday night. While there were some whiffs and DZTOs, Michigan also wasn’t living on the edge, asking Jake Barczewski to save them. They could not survive that way, and they didn’t have to do so. That’s a positive at least. They only gave up fourteen shots in the first two periods. The problem was that they did get beaten in transition by some Super Fast Eagles.

-Ethan Edwards got a little unlucky on the second goal. He was tying up his guy in front of the net and the puck was thrown into the crease…and hit off both of his skates before squeaking though Barzo’s pads and into the net. It was a very unfortunate occurrence and hard to really put much on Edwards for that. Aside from that, he skated and created well.

-Seamus Casey returned to the ice…and looked a lot like himself. He got beat positionally by a couple a bigger, really talented dudes. He also created in the offensive end. While nothing resulted in a goal, he did dangle a few Eagles and create chances. It was good to see him back after not seeing him much in Maryland Heights.

-Marshall Warren did not get the result he wanted, but I thought he played well. Warren looked good on both ends of the ice, and even drew iron with one shot. The thing to remember about him is how he progressed throughout the year and was one of the main pieces of Michigan’s defensive turnaround late in the season and in their tournaments. It’s too bad he’s out of eligibility. I’d like to see him in a second year in this program.

Power Play. Michigan got one real power play and a couple of pieces of advantages. It’s hard to do much with a couple of 30 second chances, but on their one legit opportunity, Frank Nazar has the best look and ripped it high over the net. BC has a great Kill, and they mostly exacted their will upon the nation’s leading power play. Most of Michigan’s numbers came on their last power play when the game was 4-0, and BC took a penalty to prevent Michigan’s best scoring chance of the evening.

Penalty Kill. Michigan was actually very good on the penalty kill on Thursday night. It wasn’t really a game for special teams, as each team had two split man advantages. Still on BC’s full power play, Michigan mostly just shut it down. This is more of a testament as to how far this unit has come. Once an abject disaster, it now locked down one of the best power plays in the country. Point for the coaching staff and players involved.

Notes. Jake Barczewski started in net and was…fine. Much like the rest of his season and Michigan career. It was good, even maybe exceeding expectations a little bit at certain times. Honestly, it didn’t matter how good he was because it’s impossible to win a game with zero goals. To his credit, he did make about 3-4 Hero Saves, including a couple of stretching pad saves at the post. I didn’t love him on the second and fourth goals. While the second was super unlucky, I never love pucks dribbling through goalies legs. He overcommitted a little on the fourth goal, getting outside the post…which in turn didn’t allow him to get back across to the far post on the wraparound. Not great, but it wasn’t wasn’t well-defended either. The first and third goals are highly dangerous OMR rushes. Should he save them? Not necessarily. Could he? Sure. Has he normally this season? No. Did he need to in order to give Michigan a chance? Yes. That’s why it was widely stated across Michigan Hockey coverage that Barzo would have to have the game of his life. He did not. That’s…okay though. He was good for the team, this season. He came up huge a couple weekends ago. He’ll be fondly remembered. He’s just not an elite goalie. Not everyone is. Thank you, Barzo, for Maryland Heights.

Notes. This is where the game was lost. BC generates a lot off the rush with their elite forwards. Michigan has been better as of late at preventing that. They were NOT on Thursday night (for the second straight year). BC got out early and often in transition and scored on their first two OMRs. After Casey was caught up ice in the early moments of the game, Ryan Leonard found Will Smith on a 2v1 (partially due to Truscott’s inability to take away the pass) for an easy chance to open the scoring. Cutter Gauthier also beat Casey into the zone and then fired the puck through Barczewski to make it 3-0, effectively ending the game. To Jake’s credit, he did shut down a breakaway later on in the third, once the outcome was decided.

BC got out in transition, but they also didn’t let Michigan do the same. The Wolverines created one 4v2…that ended up on Luca’s stick. His shot was deflected. That was it for Michigan. One rush. This is just another area that BC was definitely better and dominated. They’re the best for many reasons.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Eh. I’m disappointed, but I’m not surprised. That’s seems to be the theme of the night. When the better team wins, it’s probably good for sports. There’s a reason some teams are better, and if they didn’t win enough, what would be the point? Sure, Michigan could have played out of their minds, BC could have laid and egg, and puck luck could have just been Maize and Blue. But…that probably would have been a fluke…and definitely a long shot. In the end, Michigan had a successful season. The loss in Boston is still crushing. Tampa…frustrating. This one? It feels apropos. Michigan got better throughout the season, got robbed of a Big Ten Tournament Title, but got revenge in Maryland Heights after a memorable win over a great North Dakota team. Then, they ran into a Death Star and lost. This wasn’t their best team, and in the end, they overachieved…with one longshot at glory. While I’d like to win one of these at some point, ending the season at the Frozen Four every year? Not too bad.

Nice write-up, and good perspective in the "Final Thoughts," David. Agree on all counts. A Frozen Four for this team, this year, exceeded almost all expectations. Disappointing in the moment, but definitely a surprising and exciting last few weeks to the season. Way to Go, Blue. Let's get back next year!

Great achievement getting to this point in this particular season.

That was somehow reminiscent of losing a game to the '94 Penguins.

Game felt like 2022 UM vs OSU. Michigan was aggressively trying to control possession, refusing to bend and hoping to never break catastrophically. I liked the gameplan a lot, throwing pucks at the net is often a recipe for success and Barzo (or any other goalie, really) wasn't gonna be able to hold up against that level of firepower given an average number of chances. The path forward was narrow, BC got the bounces that UM was hoping to get. It is what it is, not upset about it. Making the FF was a bit of an overachievement (though they smashed MSU), and they were playing to win with house money. Great season, can't wait for next year.

Definitely felt like it could have reasonably been 1-1 or 2-1 in the 3d period.  (a breakaway due to a player with the puck just falling down.  Grrrr.)  OTOH, 4-0 didn't feel too far out of place either.

We definitely aren't here saying 'but, the refs' or 'good grief, that was all plinko', which is a nice change.

I feel about how I thought I would feel: sad that it's over. Happy that it happened.

It really looked like this team was going to crash out without a tourney bid not that long ago. But then they put some things together, went on another good B1G title run, and performed brilliantly in a stacked (but not elite elite) regional. Beating our arch-rival to go to the FF? Always wonderful.

And the hope is that, after many years where the flukes went against us, maybe it's our turn?

Nope, still not. And there were some bad breaks in there; the ice around the blue lines appeared to be terrible, directly affecting Michigan's gameplan of getting long-ish pucks in on goal looking for bounces and deflections. Had to be 10+ whiffs and blown tires out there, and one of them led directly to the third BC goal.

That was also on that unjust 4-on-4 after they called the phantom penalty on Duke, taking away a PP. A 1-0 tight game turned into a 3-0 shellacking. I don't like that, and I'm annoyed at whiffing issues...

But you can't complain that the breaks and a bad call cost you a game where you scored 0 goals. The better team won. As David says, sometimes it's good for the sport when the better team wins. Like in football this year.

Is it a cope to keep going back to the football team and remembering that?

No. It's real, and it's spectacular. Michigan hockey is, once again, Sisyphus watching the rock roll back down the hill. This time, though, we're looking at the other hill, the bigger and harder one, and there's a massive boulder anchored on top, carrying an inscription that says "15-0."

No matter. I got to go, take my daughter. Her second time ever hearing a Michigan band in person; they gave her a picture, too. Saw a few mgobloggers, including (for the first time) Craig and David. My gratitude to those who made this possible is significant.

Memories forever. Michigan forever. Go Blue.

It was frustrating to watch the young, super NHL talented team play killer defense and then burn you the other way. Never felt like we played defense like that in '21 or '22. Also frustrating that we just couldnt buy a goal - if anyone did fancy stats for college hockey, it felt like the expected goals for Michigan should've been at least 1 or 2 given the chances down low...then you're playing a great game and BC comes down and gets a series of rube goldberg deflections to get goal #2. They played a good game and just had zero puck luck last night to give them any help

i rarely watch non-UM hockey, so hadn’t seen BC at all this season.

single-game caveats apply, but that’s as great a team as i’ve ever seen, just an absolute buzzsaw.

Nice write-up.  I assumed BC would win; I thought people read too much into their (relative) struggles in the regional but as a current resident of Boston I've seen BC (and BU) on TV a couple of times and they are terrifyingly good.  UM wasn't built to grind them down and pull an upset, and so sometimes you just lose.  It sucks, but this wasn't supposed to be a great team this season and they overachieved to get this far.

Next year, assuming they get a goalie in the portal, will feature a ton of talent and depth that'll once again make UM a death star.  Doesn't mean they'll win it all but the direction of the program is still up and that's exciting.

Credit to the players for getting this far and let's run it back and try to pick up some conference hardware next year as well.

A much better tournament run than expected, given how the regular season went. So kudos for that. Got some revenge on FYS. Then got got by the bear, at the last.

Man, if we could get a goalie to stand on his head in the tourney ....

Right out the gate, Michigan was buzzing and I thought:

"wow, we can really win this."

Then the Casey pinch, Perrault chips it out, and the 2 on 1 goal with Leonard and Smith happened:

"oh, this is how this is going to go."

Michigan really controlled the game, kept themselves in it, and had a chance even though BC collapsed the middled and limited on man rushes. Then the phantom Duke penalty... Then the oh boy bounce of the puck of of both Edwards' skates and five hole on Barzo. Then 40ish seconds later a McGroarty from the o-zone blue line shooting directly into the most dangerous player in College Hockey (Gauthier) that gifts them  a 2 on 1 that Gauthier buries. After that short sequence Michigan played deflated:

"that's about it. Nice turnaround to our season. Only wish the hockey gods could bless us with some ref and puck luck one of these post seasons."

Now, it'll be interesting who goes pro, who stays, and who hops over from the portal. Next year's class looks stunning too.

I will remember this as one of my favorite seasons.  This team had serious issues in the first half of the season, but the effort was always there.  Just when I thought "welp, we are what we are" things began to click and a remarkable stretch of improved play ensued.  It was a pleasure to watch this team always work and be rewarded with the growth in their game.  I salute the players and coaches for blasting through their perceived ceiling and reaching their third consecutive Frozen Four.

According to KRACH, Michigan had a 38% chance to beat NoDak, a 34% chance to beat MSU, and a 22.5% chance to beat BC.  That they won the first two was a nice reminder that odds are not destiny, but this game just felt utterly like it was holding back the tide for as long as they could until the could not any longer.  But given that they were on the outside of the tournament looking in at a very late moment in the season, the way they rallied to even get to this point was remarkable.  BC's been the nation's best team this year, and once again they showed last night why people have said that over and over.

Suuuuuper casual M hockey fan here, and just very grateful for this season, this team, and the awesome run the players and coaches put together.

Dang, those BC kids Smith and Gauthier were … dang. I guess they’re pretty good at hockey, huh. Maybe they should think about doing this full time or something.

Even if some of this team leaves after this season, it definitely feels to this casual fan like the program’s heading in a very good direction. In the meantime—a team, and a run, to remember.

Across all sports since 1960, I’d bet no other school in the country has had as many close-but-no-cigar seasons as Michigan.

Thanks for the recap David, and definitely kudos to an amazing BC team. Just so dominant, and it shows how a team of fab freshman can buy in to playing stout defense. The offense was as high level as I've seen, but the defense is what won the game.

Proud of the team, I'm hoping that the staff & returning players take away the example of the highest level of hockey they participated in. And implement some improvements, develop that chemistry a little more. Go Blue, so proud of the season.

BC just felt so fast. On offense they pushed the tempo. On defense they always got into position to block or disrupt our shots. Just a different animal than we’ve played all season.

We needed some puck luck and bad calls to go in our favor to win.

Instead, BC - who definitely did not need it - got the puck luck and bad calls to go in their favor.  And it happened early in the game.

Forget it.  It was all over when that went down.

Was this an exceptional Michigan team? No. That said, as John U. Bacon pointed out on Friday speaking w/Sam Webb, we have now gone to NINE (9) Frozen Fours since we last won a National Championship and come home empty. Call me spoiled, but I have long since grown tired of "close but no cigar."
