Michigan 72, Penn State 63 Comment Count

Penn State really needed a big win to bolster its NCAA Tournament resume, and Michigan’s trip to Happy Valley on Senior Day gave them a great opportunity to ease their way up the bubble. Michigan played excellent defense in the first half and built a sizable lead, which was quickly erased by Tony Carr and Lamar Stevens early in the second half. The Wolverines responded, mixed in some different 2-3 defenses that threw Penn State off balance, and a couple Moe Wagner threes helped Michigan pull out to a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. Solid free throw shooting down the stretch (9-10 on intentional fouls) staved off a Nittany Lion comeback and Michigan escaped with one of its best wins of the season against a desperate team that was on a hot streak.

Despite a few indifferent late-game possessions. Carr and Stevens - arguably the best guard in the conference and a very capable sidekick - scored 40 points combined, but it took them 39 shot equivalents to do it. Carr was held in check in the first half with solid defense from Zavier Simpson and timely double-teams; he knocked down a few threes of varying difficulty and got to the rim in the second half - finishing with a 21 point, 5 rebound, 6 assist line. Stevens was often guarded by Duncan Robinson when Michigan played man-to-man, and Robinson made him work for many of his points; the Wolverines initially allowed him too much room in the middle of the zone, but adjusted to harass him into a couple key mistakes.

No other Nittany Lion scored in double figures. Their best center, Mike Watkins, was injured while contesting a Charles Matthews layup, and only played five minutes on the night. That loss came early in the game, as both teams struggled to score: Michigan had five quick turnovers, and Penn State futilely tried post-ups on most possessions. Jon Teske had some impactful minutes on the defensive end in the first half after Wagner picked up his first foul. Even after Wagner returned, Penn State labored for good looks until a late burst by Stevens.

The Wolverines were able to build their initial lead with scoring off the bench from Robinson and Jordan Poole, who combined for 20 of Michigan’s 34 first half points. Robinson hit his first three-point attempt after screening and popping out of Michigan’s side curl action, had a nice cut for a layup, got Stevens to bite on a pump fake and knocked down a two-point jumper, blew by him for a layup, and hit another three. Poole made a corner three off an extra pass, had an absolutely ridiculous dunk over Julian Moore for an and-one, and got an easy transition layup. The freshman had a few rough moments, but his scoring was an upgrade over Matthews, who had his worst game of the season.

Michigan led by 13 at one point, but Penn State was much better out of the halftime break, scoring on their first four possessions: Carr got Simpson on his hip and took him to the rim for two, Michigan helped too far off Stevens for a three and gave Carr another one on a bad scramble situation, and Josh Reaves blew by Poole for a layup. Penn State took the lead before the first TV timeout, and it looked as if Michigan might get run out of the gym. John Beilein eventually turned to the zone, which was effective. The initial zone was spread too thin, but Michigan adjusted to sink into the high post when the ball was entered into Stevens.

Wagner made some big plays after that. He had made a few early threes (including one on the first possession of the game), but too often would pump-fake and drive into traffic for worse looks in the paint. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman made a play late in the shot clock to find Wagner for a corner three to break a Penn State run; shortly after, Matthews found him on the wing for another on a pick-and-pop - and instead of driving it on Stevens (a stretch-four who was guarding Wagner in a small-ball lineup), he hit a three over him. Penn State and Michigan traded buckets and stops for a while, until Wagner hit a tough layup on a drive against Moore and Poole nailed another corner three to trigger a Penn State timeout and give Michigan a 54-48 lead with seven minutes left.

Out of the timeout, Nazeer Bostick threw it right to Abdur-Rahkman in the zone, and Simpson scored an absurd swooping sky-hook over Carr on the next possession. Michigan had a few empty possessions from there, but stops on the defensive end - including Wagner drawing a charge on Stevens, Robinson emphatically rejecting a Stevens dunk, and Carr missing a couple threes - helped Michigan hold onto the lead. The Wolverines were up four with under three minutes left when Abdur-Rahkman hit a very tough layup over Reaves (maybe the best perimeter defender in the Big Ten, who helped force Abdur-Rahkman into an uncharacteristic four turnovers), Bostick missed a wild layup attempt, and Robinson hit a transition three for the dagger.

It was mostly a free throw exhibition from there: Robinson made both, Wagner made both, Simpson made one of two, Livers made both, and Poole made both. A few uncontested Penn State buckets were interspersed in there, but a comeback wasn’t possible. Michigan overcame an unusually high level of turnovers and a negative shot differential, mostly because they made 10-21 three-pointers (all but one came from Wagner, Robinson, and Poole). Robinson had a great game - in addition to his team-high 19 points, he had three blocks and a steal. Wagner put up 18 and 8 rebounds. Poole chipped in with 13 and played 26 minutes to Matthews’s 17. Simpson and Abdur-Rahkman each had their struggles against a tough defense, but each scored nine points.

Michigan’s record improved to 23-7 (12-5 in the Big Ten) and is moving its way up the seed line. They still have a chance at a double bye in the Big Ten Tournament if they beat Maryland and Penn State beats Nebraska this weekend. Even though Matthews was held scoreless, the Wolverines dribbled out the clock on the road against what was a Kenpom Top 25 team. Robinson and Abdur-Rahkman are rounding into form as their careers wind to an end, Poole has played two really good games in a row, and Moe Wagner is consistently punishing teams with the mismatches he creates. This win against Penn State was very impressive, and Michigan looks like they’ll be a very tough out in March.

That seems like a lot for a weeknight game. I didn't read them all. I am guessing there were a few derogatory comments made towards the officials. But my main point is that this team is playing relevant games in late February and people are paying attention. Good win. Go Blue.

We got lucky when Penn St center went down with injury.  Michigan has a lot of problem against teams that play a smaller and quicker lineups (like Nebraska).  It seems that our offense stalls when the opponents can switch man-to-man and stay in front of Moe Wagner.

And you managed to undermine an excellent effort by our team against a very hot Penn State team on the road. Double fail.

First you say that we got lucky that their big man went down, but then you say we have trouble matching up with teams that play small. Penn State played small today, and we seemed to do just fine. I got unlucky, I read your post.

23-7 with the last game at Maryland to come. Moving solidly towards a 5 seed.

I am greedy. i want that win at Maryland Though its on the road, we have a shot at that 4 seed. Nebraska can lose to Penn State.

Even if we get the 5, we have a weak game vs the Iowa/Minnesota winner, then can get revenge vs Nebraska in the Quarters.

A win vs the Huskers gives us a Michigan State rematch in the Semi Finals!! that would be tough as they want revenge for our win in Breslin.

That would be a great game in advance of the NCAA Tourney.

I like a 5 seed, and I dont know if a 4 is possible.

after our 4th Big Ten game, at 3-1 i looked at the schedule and predicted we could go 24-7. i cant believe a win at Maryland and i will be on it!

Go Blue, Gonna be a Fun march. Lets try to make the Sweet Sixteen!!

Now can someone do an article on MGoBlog on what happened to Charles Matthews? is it just a new kid adjusting roughly to the BIg Ten season and having a drop off from the preseason?

If we can get that type of output in the tournament with Beilein's best defensive/maybe worst 3-point shooting team, we will be tough to knock out.  I hope the guys will keep an eye out for Duncan flashing open for 3's on the fast break.  He could be lethal in transition.

we have four Q1 wins, i.e. wins in which we've played like a top 10 team.

This is only DRob's second good game out of the four.

He had just 3 points in 18 minutes against MSU.

4 points (two of which were late game gift FTs) on 0-3 shooting against OSU.

The other was a solid game against Texas.

It is extremely nice to have Drob hitting his shots.  And if he's going to play a lot and shoot, we obviously can't afford him missing a lot of his shots (as happened against LSU, UNC, OSU1, and Northwestern2), but this team can and has played some of its most impressive games with very little contribution from him.

The coaches of done an excellent job of putting him in the right spots and he's done a great job of getting his defense to an acceptable level.  But there will be games in the future in which it's better not to even have him on the floor much, depending on matchups.

To think that a 23-7 Michigan team with Ws over MSU, OSU, UCLA and Texas could be staring down a 7-seed just seems unfair. That said, JB needs to stop scheduling Indiana Basin Silt College and Alabama Gulf Coast St. A&M and start playing some decent mid majors. (And for those who say "John has his reasons for scheduling only sub-300 teams", maybe so, but he's wrong and we might have to play Kansas or Duke in round 2 as a consequence.) That said, great win for the guys over the eternally shameful Penn St!

Torn between wanting to play MSU in the big ten tourney or not. Want to play them because we are playing great ball right now and a chance to beat this MSU a team twice would be AMAZING. On the other hand if we play them it gives them a shot at revenge. What do you guys think? Which are you rooting for? p.s. thank you Coach Beilein for being so freaking great!!

Well, simply because us playing them means we didn't lose to Nebraska or Iowa/Illinois, then I choose that. Michigan State is supposed to be a National Championship contender and they got beat handily at home by us. Even if they got revenge in the BTT, that won't take away that fantastic nature of the win at the Breslin.

I would have preferred Purdue to have the 1 seed so an appearance in the semis would mean a rematch with them, but since it has to be MSU, I absolutely want to get there to play them again.  Definitely don't want to lose before the semis.

I do think we match up well with them and can beat them again, but yeah, I wouldn't have minded leaving this season as a win at Breslin to call it good.

for a good portion of the game, the sense of loyalty to play Matthews just for the sake of it wasn't a factor and that was the right thing to do for the team's sake, he was pretty bad in this game, I just wonder if he has a confidence problem right now. He makes so many boneheaded decisions.

The team played great in the last 10 minutes when Matthews was on the bench, certainly not a coincidence. I hope he picks his game back up cause we'll need him down the stretch at some point.

Regardless of all of that, that was a great win, Go Blue!

Duncan Robinson's emergence on defense, and the overall team D in general, has been remarkably pivotal.  And his shooting seems less streaky too - more consistantly good than going from white hot to ice cold as it did early in the season and his career.

In two months, when the house of cards for so many programs comes crashing down, we will be even more incredibly proud of Coach B and the incredible job he has done here. I'll fight the next person who suggests we get rid of him.

His development is really something.

Defense...Creating his own shot...Taking it to the rack...

Just another Beilein special.

My only concern now is Livers.  We need him to get more than 8 minutes.  He's more valuable than Matthews.

Livers has a role on this team and he will continue to see minutes, but when Duncan is playing like that it’s hard to find the minutes for Isaiah, specially with Poole playing so well to take most of Matthews minutes. We will see plenty more of Livers

Not that I expect much from BTN announcers in the way of coherance, but did anyone understand the repeated reference to the PSU bench as "Roman Catholics?"

I confess, normally I am infallible in my ability to divine the meaning of these kinds of things...

PSU has four players from Philadelphia Roman Catholic High School -- Tony Carr, Lamar Stevens, Nazeer Bostick, and Shep Garner.  Think Detroit Catholic Central, only less obviously a school, as opposed to a religion. :)

Carr, Stevens, and Bostick are all sophomores, so expect to hear it for the next couple of years.  Garner is the senior 3-point specialist who made his first off-balance three and then tried four more on the assumption that it wasn't a fluke.  It was.  (He scored PSU's first three points and was held scoreless thereafter).

If his assumption was bad, can we say he is not an ascending player? Our team played an immaculate game. The zone was a great conception by Beilein. It would have taken multiple Hail Marys for PSU to beat us.

Neither is currently effective on offense but are good defenders/rebounders.The HUGE difference between the two is Livers rarely forces it and thus doesn't negatively effect the offensive flow.Take note Charles!!! Stop forcing it and work on being able to use your left hand & driving left.Defenses have adjusted,I have no doubt he will be a much improved player next year but right now just stop forcing it.

Not to be mean, but don't know if I have seen a D1 caliber guard/forward be so weak with their off hand. Teams have definitely started to notice and block him going right. Needs major improvements on shot, dribbling/driving left.

I was unfortunately driving down Mound road this morning and I couldn't help but wonder which is worse, the potholes on Mound road or Charles Matthews game right now...I'll stick with the potholes but it's close! I hope he finds his game soon, we need him!! Go Blue!!

I wasn't buying into the Penn State as favorites for this game. We are far more talented. This is a typical middle of the conference ceiling Penn State team with one really good player and a bunch of role players without a ton of talent.
