Lavert Hill And Josh Metellus Returning
Michigan will get two major pieces of their secondary back for next year as Lavert Hill and Josh Metellus have both announced that they'll forgo the NFL draft on social media. Hill was 8th on Kiper's CB board and would likely have been a second or third round pick; Metellus was a bit fringier as a prospect but is probably draftable.
Hill's return in particular is important for Michigan's secondary next year. Ambry Thomas is a highly touted guy entering his third year and should ascend a starting job. Now Hill will bookend him instead of a redshirt or true freshman.
Devin Bush and Rashan Gary have announced they're entering the draft; Shea Patterson and Ben Bredeson will return. David Long and Zach Gentry are still potential NFL departures. I'd been banking on four departures when ballparking the size of this class, but I also wasn't expecting a couple of the departures Michigan has suffered, so I'd guess Michigan has a couple spots they could fill in the February signing period.

Why? The CFL can be a lot of fun!

Geez, don't neg so hard. I was talking about Metellus.

You’re a dick regardless. Save your ignorant negative comments for you buddies.

Two good players and guys. I will enjoy seeing them play one more season for the Michigan Wolverines.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:25 PM ^
Should be a good secondary next year. Probably the best unit on defense.
December 30th, 2018 at 7:01 PM ^
Which will definitely be key if our DL struggles to collapse the pocket in passing downs. “Coverage Sacks” now becomes a thing, especially if Dax Hill has coverage skills as good as people say.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:25 PM ^
Good news. I'll take it today.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:37 PM ^
Glad they are both back. Secondary is going to be good.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:38 PM ^
Should they just get it out-of-the-way now though and announce whether they’ll play in a bowl game next year?
December 30th, 2018 at 3:11 PM ^
Too soon.
See what I did there?
December 30th, 2018 at 2:41 PM ^
This is huge for the program. Not only do they get a great player, but they get to let the younger develop a bit more and build up the depth in the secondary. If Long comes back, they'll have some insane talent in the back 7, and should be able to hold Ohio State to less than 62 points.

Don't get over your skis ⛷

May this humble choice of theirs be rewarded in the next season with a dearth of middle aged fat men yelling at them on twitter.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:46 PM ^
You win

Hey man, I'm eating salads now!
December 30th, 2018 at 3:19 PM ^
Hey, I'm still under 40!
December 30th, 2018 at 5:58 PM ^
I’m over 50. What’s a twitter?
December 30th, 2018 at 3:00 PM ^
I don't yell. I only use lots of exclamation points to get my point across.
December 30th, 2018 at 5:21 PM ^
Hey, man, I don’t even HAVE a Twitter account.
In related news, I’m already looking forward to hearing about which bowl game they’ll be sitting out of.
December 30th, 2018 at 6:20 PM ^
...from their parents' basements, of course.

Excellent.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:42 PM ^
I will only be happy if I see them in more zone coverage next year. Especially on 3rd and long.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:54 PM ^
I never thought I'd see the day when football fans clamor for their team to run zone coverage on third and long.
December 30th, 2018 at 5:22 PM ^
Exhibit A: 62 points.
Exhibit B: 41 points.
December 30th, 2018 at 3:38 PM ^
Like they were on 3rd and 12 and Florida threw right down the middle for 35 yards.
December 30th, 2018 at 4:53 PM ^
What defensive coverage was it on 3rd and 20 and Florida scored a TD running the ball?
December 30th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
I just stated that Michigan was in zone, Cover 2 and it didn't help.
And your counter is to ask what they were in a on the TD run? They were in Cover 2, again. Florida had three bunch receivers to the field and one receiver to the boundary. Michigan had one LB and two high safeties. Thank you for helping me make my point.
December 30th, 2018 at 2:59 PM ^
Should we read anything into the fact that Long did not announce with them?
December 30th, 2018 at 3:12 PM ^
With Shea and these two back in the fold, we have what we need to win the B1G next year. Long and Gentry would be a tremendous addition/luxury.
December 30th, 2018 at 6:02 PM ^
Having two of three State schools at home should help.
December 30th, 2018 at 3:21 PM ^
That'll work and is a good choice by both guys - they each need a little more baking in the college game to get to where they'll do better at the pro level.
December 30th, 2018 at 6:27 PM ^
Phrasing? Nick Stauskas would like a word.....
December 30th, 2018 at 3:35 PM ^
That’s good about Hill. Whatever about Metellus.
December 30th, 2018 at 6:09 PM ^
Do you realize there's a reason Metellus was starting? Are you aware that Kinnel is graduating?
December 30th, 2018 at 4:29 PM ^
Perhaps the two of them can instruct Don Brown on the zone defense concept.
December 30th, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
It doesn't matter if you run Cover 1 man or Cover 2 zone or any other zone, if you don't get pressure on the QB, you are in trouble. Michigan's weak spot all year was the interior DL.

We have the meats!!
December 30th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
Any insight on Solomon’s decision? My gut says that it’s becasue the D is losing elite talent to NFL and will be mediocre in the next couple of years. Worth it to him too sit out a year? Maybe a surgury/health would keep him out anyway? Hope I’m wrong.
A lot of transfers, mostly on offense that I didn’t understand this year. Haven’t seen a lot of follow up. We were exposed as a very thin roster yesterday...
December 30th, 2018 at 5:25 PM ^
This is how most teams live in the real world. They mitigate it by scoring more than 15 points.
December 30th, 2018 at 5:37 PM ^
good news did anybody else see long leave the game early with an injury?
December 30th, 2018 at 7:07 PM ^
Pretty sure it was just a cramp.
December 30th, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
Those who STAY will be Champions...Those that abandon the team WONT
December 30th, 2018 at 8:29 PM ^
Well, so far, no one who has stayed has been champion of anything. Not even their division.
December 30th, 2018 at 11:19 PM ^
You're not calling Bo a liar, are you?
December 30th, 2018 at 7:01 PM ^
Doom!!! Gloom!!!
or we are going to have a pretty good and experienced team next year. First with a returning QB who made an entire season with out injury.
December 31st, 2018 at 2:26 AM ^
Metellus had a terrible game against Florida. He's undraftable if anybody looks at that. He has much to work on, and hopefully will be a lot better by next year.
I hope Long stays.
December 31st, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
I thought Kinnel had a rough game compared to him, was I mistaken or did they both have rough games?
December 31st, 2018 at 7:19 AM ^
Great player, great kid. Having said that, if Jourdan Lewis is a 3rd rd pick I find it hard to believe that Hill is a potential 2nd rounder this year. He could be next year though.
December 31st, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
What are the reasons if Long were to go pro, that he would leave and Hill stay? Or conversely, the reasons Hill is staying? Just curious as I thought they were pretty comparable players, size and results.
