Big ol' welp right here:

That has to be a record for the fastest a Michigan OL has entered the draft. Even if there had been a season Mayfield would have entered as a redshirt sophomore, and I can't recall anyone who'd managed that before. Taylor Lewan was the only guy in spitting distance in the last decade.
There is no content after the jump.

This one hurts, but best of luck to the man. Get that bag!
August 19th, 2020 at 2:02 PM ^
He could have gone to NO$U or the $EC and got the bag sooner...

Congratulations. God speed.
August 18th, 2020 at 5:28 PM ^
The 2020 dick punches continue at a record clip.

Roll dick punches, roll
August 18th, 2020 at 5:29 PM ^
Good luck Jalen! We barely knew ya but once a Wolverine, always a Wolverine.
5 new OL next year. Warinner will have his hands full forming this new line. Hopefully some game experience from Hayes and Stueber can help anchor the line and help them gel together.
August 18th, 2020 at 5:52 PM ^
A total OL rebuild and I'm most confident in....the tackles?
Wild times, indeed.
August 19th, 2020 at 1:11 PM ^
At one point we had Lewan on the left, Schofield on the right, and turnstiles in between.
August 18th, 2020 at 10:44 PM ^
Good thing that Hayes has game experience and is the most experienced OL returning. As for the other 4, it's going to be tough to fill the OL holes full of dudes who got drafted or will be drafted.
August 18th, 2020 at 5:32 PM ^
<sad trombone>
August 18th, 2020 at 5:32 PM ^
Not a surprise, he's a first rounder, Thank you Jalen and Good Luck!
August 18th, 2020 at 8:11 PM ^
I'll take that bet
August 18th, 2020 at 5:34 PM ^
OSU should lose about 50% of their starters. Will they? Who knows, shit always seems to fall in place for them. Their underclassmen will probably end up being better anyways.
Hoping this 1 year pause fucks up their mojo though.
August 18th, 2020 at 5:46 PM ^
Seems like the Buckeyes tend to have lots of players stick around probably because they know they've got another good shot at a national championship.
August 18th, 2020 at 8:09 PM ^
Or the rookie wage cap means a paycut.
August 18th, 2020 at 9:47 PM ^
Obviously!
August 18th, 2020 at 5:48 PM ^
At the rate they keep upgrading we’re only a few years away at most from the first dozen NFL draft picks to all come from OSU. By the end of the decade everyone on their two-deep will be an NFL HoFer.
Nothing bad ever happens to that program.
August 19th, 2020 at 1:05 PM ^
Considering their best player is not doing this, and spearheading the effort to play this year, I wouldn't bet on it.
August 18th, 2020 at 5:36 PM ^
Is there a reason why the announcement is happening now? Timing feels unnecessary, unless I'm missing something? (Not hating, very happy for the young man and wish him the best. I just was curious as to what benefits, if any, there are with announcing this now.)
August 18th, 2020 at 5:39 PM ^
Probably would have opted out regardless - his stock was high.Kids don't come to Michigan anymore for Michigan; just use it to get to the next level.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:10 PM ^
He could continue training for a season that isn't going to happen while taking virtual classes from a college he's unlikely to graduate from, or he could just start training full time for the next stage of his life. Or just keep taking virtual classes while training for the next stage of his life. Sticking around at college probably isn't worth as much if you're not going to get the full college experience.
August 18th, 2020 at 11:35 PM ^
Is he dropping out of school altogether or just quitting the team? He has a long time til the draft. Assuming he is not enrolling it seems like he’d have more than enough time to get a semester of classes in without fall football and still be plenty prepared for the draft. we are doing a hell of a job of devaluing an education around here though. Hopefully he’ll stay enrolled for at least fall semester. There isn’t anything else to really do with covid anyway.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:11 PM ^
Michigan is using fall to practiceuup for whenever there is football. If you're not going to be part of it why work on Michigan's plays and take up snaps from the next guy when you can work on being a pro and maybe make some money in the process.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:36 PM ^
The only argument for sticking around that makes sense to me is if the guy can't afford training that is comparable to what they'd get at school.
August 18th, 2020 at 6:56 PM ^
But now he would be able to sign with an agent that could take care of all that for him.
August 18th, 2020 at 7:53 PM ^
Yeah but the kids who are going this route are being looked at as first or second round picks for the most part. Meaning an agent would be willing to pick them up and foot the bill because they’ll make the money back after they sign their rookie deal
August 18th, 2020 at 8:11 PM ^
Every mock draft has him as a top-15 pick at this point, so he fits the bill.
August 18th, 2020 at 8:56 PM ^
No they don't. Only mock I could find that had him in the first round was Walter Football. ESPN, PFF, and 247 don't have him in the first round at all. I stopped looking after those three. PFF also doesn't have him as one of the top 5 OTs either.
August 19th, 2020 at 6:09 AM ^
Well that’s just blatantly false... he’s absolutely not a top 15 pick on all the major mocks. Did you look at only 1 or something?
August 19th, 2020 at 10:55 AM ^
Actually PFF doesn't have him going in the 1st rd.
Kwity at 15 tho!
August 18th, 2020 at 5:36 PM ^
Certainly can't fault the kid. Best of luck to him, bet he'll make a great pro. This is a blow but there are a lot of good OL on the roster. Whenever a season actually happens, maybe they can even kick the tires on Jeffrey Persi...
August 18th, 2020 at 5:37 PM ^
Seems a little quick to make a decision, Mr. Wade hasn’t even landed in Chicago yet.
August 18th, 2020 at 5:37 PM ^
Next up, Harbaugh (citing a will to coach somewhere that allows football - my guess is Offensive Analyst for an NFL team this year with a jump to a head coaching job after the season).
August 18th, 2020 at 5:43 PM ^
Hope he earns a meaningful degree before he leaves.
August 18th, 2020 at 7:54 PM ^
Eh. Why? He can come back and finish his degree at any time.
August 18th, 2020 at 11:40 PM ^
Can he? I thought the point behind a scholarship was the education. You know, if football doesn’t work out. The only thing he WAS guaranteed was an education. He isn’t guaranteed his health, draft pick, or contract. Perhaps his family would still be able to support an education out of pocket but most people don’t have that luxury.
August 19th, 2020 at 6:11 AM ^
Psst. The school honors the scholarship even after you leave. Just stop. This was a bad take.
August 18th, 2020 at 5:51 PM ^
In normal circumstances I would say he was making a mistake. With no season .. I don't know. I expect he will be a mid round pick. Best of luck.
August 18th, 2020 at 7:55 PM ^
He’s being talked about as a first rounder right now. Since there’s going to be no season, not sure what will happen that drops him to mid round.
August 18th, 2020 at 8:21 PM ^
Nothing, except a crappy combine and interviews which he is now spending an extra 4-5 months on.
He has proven he can play at a high level, has one season less of mileage and is very young (doesn't turn 21 until next May). Frankly, I think this is exactly what an NFL OL coach would want--take the talent and mold it as opposed to trying to break a full 4 years of potentially bad technique.
August 19th, 2020 at 6:27 AM ^
From literally everything I've read and seen, that is precisely the opposite of what NFL coaches want. They want polished, pro-ready players (though they'll spend picks on obvious talent). College is very much a free minor league for the NFL, and they take it for granted. They don't want to spend any time coaching anyone less than HoF talent out of bad habits. There are exceptions, but they are exceptions.
Mayfield's exit makes sense in the context of B1G's cancellation, but otherwise, early draft entries generally don't go well. Too much to take in at once, if you've got technique work on top of learning the scheme.
August 18th, 2020 at 9:48 PM ^
Mock drafts this time of year mean less than September Heisman talk. Unless he blows up at the combine, he doesn't have the tape to push him into the 1st round.
Now if he shows off at the combine, then all bets are off and I could possibly see him take a Ruiz like jump in the draft. But he isn't some 6'7" 330 lb monster with quick feet that you take solely based on potential.
August 19th, 2020 at 6:13 AM ^
If he has the tape to be considered first round right now, why doesn’t he have the tape to be considered first round in the spring?
Again, there isn’t going to be a season. Nobody is going to have new tape. So what exactly do you think is going to happen between now and the draft where scouts are all of a sudden going to not like the tape they already like?
August 18th, 2020 at 5:51 PM ^
Best of luck to you Jalen! Hope you can continue the tradition of Michigan Offensive Linemen in the league. Sucks that we hardly know ya'.
August 18th, 2020 at 5:52 PM ^
Tell me again why Spindler opted to go to Notre Dame? This Warinner guy can coach some OL! Plus there are now 5 open spots on the line.

"Academics are very important to me and my family."
August 18th, 2020 at 5:59 PM ^
Like I want to be classy and wish him luck and say all the right things, but boy does this ever feel like a huge mistake, virus or no virus.
August 18th, 2020 at 7:55 PM ^
.... because?
August 18th, 2020 at 8:14 PM ^
because he's not that good?
August 19th, 2020 at 6:14 AM ^
But he is that good. So.....?
