After much deliberation, I have decided to forego the NFL and come back to Michigan for one last season. It’s my absolute honor to represent this university for one more season after everything it has done for me. Time to work pic.twitter.com/l8pb1Z4Chq
Winovich was an All Big Ten player to PFF after sharing the team lead in sacks with Khaleke Hudson with 8; he managed to outpace Hudson wsg Minnesota's Offensive Scheme in the TFL department with 18.5. His return means Michigan gets back 9 starters from the #10 S&P+ defense and should again expect to have a top ten—probably top five—defense in 2018.

MICHIGAN MAN

Winovich returning, Drevno and Pep leaving? Today is a good day for 2018 hopes.

Offense has some catching up to do.

Who slides in for McCray? There is so much nuance to the linebacker types in this defense I have no idea who is envisioned for that role. Uche? Mbem-Bosse? Anthony, Singleton, Ross, Gil?
Replacing Hurst I'm guessing will be rotations of Hudson, Mone, Dwumfour, maybe Jeter.

In his detailed pre-bowl presser, Don Brown sounded excited for the looming 2018 battle between Gil and Ross. Seeing as Gil replaced McCray in the Outback, I think it's safe to say those are your two front-runners.

Hudson is on offense (has been since spring), and will be an odds-on favorite to start at one of the tackle positions.

I knew that. I meant Soloman but typed Hudson for some reason.
Also - The UFR will show some nice snaps from Dwumfour. So nice get off for a big man.

We have a wealth of young linebackers, especially with McGrone and (fingers crossed) Reese coming in.

Pity that I have so little hair to dye.

Yay. For real. Has he ever played QB? Wildcat Winovich

What's the hurry to the NFL? Stay in Ann Arbor and have fun. You'll miss it later in life.

He can take the handoff on that fullback dive.

We know he can tackle but can he pass and catch??

Love the guys that stay. Guys like Hurst, Win ,,will long be remembered at M.
Bo's type of guys. Go Blue.

"Whatever"
January 3rd, 2018 at 11:23 AM ^
Awesome.
We have a tougher schedule next year, but all we need is an average offense not ranked 86th again...Crap if we could get our offense into the top 40 - next year we could potentially be a top 10 team assuming our defense is top 5.

was very needed for this crazy fan base. Atta baby Chase!
Should have a very nice d again, ala 2016.
January 3rd, 2018 at 12:03 PM ^
But . . but . . . I thought our fanbase was so horrible that nobody would ever want to play for Michigan.
Chase is practically Mother Theresa in a hazmat suit for coming back to this toxic fanbase.
January 3rd, 2018 at 3:52 PM ^
toxic fans are everywhere for every team.

I bet your heart grew two sizes today. Take it from an old-ish guy: you think you're going to approach M football with ennui, but you're drooling every September.

Great news!
really thrilled to hear that Chase has decided to stay at Michigan and delay the pursuit of an NFL career.

Great news - GO BLUE!

I miss her. She's been kind of scarce this season.
January 3rd, 2018 at 3:35 PM ^
She misses us too.
But rules are rules.
She only comes out for big "Yay!" moments.
Those have been quite scarce recently.

I like best about Winovich is his firepower. His passion. The way he flies around and runs -- RUNS -- off the field with a big cat-that-just-swollowed-the-canary grin.
we need a lot more of that
January 3rd, 2018 at 12:06 PM ^
Brian and Co. are going to have to scrape to find potential weaknesses on that side of the ball. Maybe depth at DT? We have a bevy of potential stars at LB to replace McCray. Secondary is loaded. Starting DL will--for the third consecutive year--be monstrous.
This is especially important for 2018, since defense tends to travel well while offenses can struggle on the road.
January 3rd, 2018 at 12:14 PM ^
We should just leave the offense at home.
January 3rd, 2018 at 12:32 PM ^
That's pretty much what we did this season.
January 3rd, 2018 at 3:38 PM ^
If only.
We brought it to visit the neighbors and it crapped all over their floor.
I swear we could have won the Outback bowl with just the offense and the field goal team.
The 5 turnovers would have never happened.
January 3rd, 2018 at 4:13 PM ^
Sorry, I still have a vision in my head of Kinnel jumping straight up for the interception on that 3rd and long in the bowl and watching the TE come across in front of him for the catch and 1st down.
January 3rd, 2018 at 12:07 PM ^
Why not? We have the next 8 months for unbridled optimism. Only up from here.

The final play at Indy where he forced the Qb to throw into the EZ for Kinnel's pick - that was probably the happiest memory from this entire season.
