Baalke, post-firing, misses SF's 2011-14 "winning culture"
These quotes, from the 49ers' now-former GM, are something (emphasis added):
Earlier Sunday, Baalke told the radio station that his firing "was the right thing to do."
"You know, I've been here since 2005, and I have a lot of respect for the organization as a whole, and the ownership, the fan base. It's difficult, but it's the right thing to do," Baalke told KNBR Radio.
Asked whether the organization needed sweeping changes, Baalke told KNBR: "Sometimes you need to reset the culture. When you have a winning culture, which we did in 2011, '12, '13 and '14, a lot of good football players. A lot of memorable games we went through together.
A strange coincidence that those four years correspond exactly to the tenure of a certain former 49ers head coach.

i'd be curious to know why. not offended in any fashion, but genuinely curious. i mean if it's just that they don't like me then no big deal, but if there is some actual reason behind it let the negger enlighten me/us.
no worries. happy new year everybody.

in some other thread, someone was actually starting to question whether "Harbaugh was the right coach for us". People are insane.

AFAIC, "that element of our fanbase" richly deserved the eight years of self-destruction. The rest of us, however, didn't...

December 2014 was a very dark time.
We had scandals from our AD, concussions, and Hoke lying about our kicker's alledged raping of a felow student - he said the kicker missed games due to family issues.
We were 5-7. Our previous bowl game saw us get annilhated by Kansas State in a lower tier bowl. We scored 1 touchdown in garbage time in our previous 3 games vs MSU. Our offense was a total joke against even mediocre teams. Our recruitng class was in the bottom three of the BigTen.
Then we hired Harbaugh...back to back 10-3 seasons with more close losses than close wins. Back to back top 5 recruitng classes. No major institutional scandals.

I have a hard time classifying any season in which Michigan is "completely robbed in C-bus" as awesome. Sure, the team was great and very successful, but that's a shitty way for a season to end.
January 2nd, 2017 at 10:01 AM ^
Many of us hoped for more with a defense like that. Yeah, we get some warm & fuzzy points for all of our loses being close, but this team should've been able to run the table into the CFP where it probably would've met its demise at the hands of Clemson or Alabama
January 2nd, 2017 at 10:45 AM ^
Indeed it should have, but feces facit. That's happened to teams before, and it will happen again.
January 2nd, 2017 at 10:47 AM ^
You really think that this team (our o-line and starting qb) was a lock? Harbaugh did amazing things with this group! The future is BRIGHT!
January 2nd, 2017 at 10:07 AM ^
Look ... I think we had a fine season. It was a lot of fun and I appreciate the efforts of everyone on the team who made it so.
Yet, given the number of seniors and experienced starters on this team, an argument can be made that they fell short of expectations ... including their own, I would imagine.
Watching Clemson dismantle OSU ... one has to be impressed with their overall size, speed, and athleticism. While we had a fine season and clearly were one of the better teams in college football this year, there is no denying the talent gap between Clemson and Michigan.
We need to continue to recruit well, and do so consistently. I have no doubt that the coaching staff will develop that talent.
This was only Year 2. A little perspective is in order. We've made great strides but have a ways to go yet, and it doesn't happen overnight.

From 5-7 two years ago to a disappointing 10-3 portends great things for the future.
January 2nd, 2017 at 12:11 PM ^
"Great" might be overdoing it; the Big Ten title was well within reach and we ended up watching a team we destroyed by 39 winning it.
But it was a good season and it's nice to have the luxury again of griping that our team "only" won 10 games. It's been awhile.

some of my first football memories centered around hearing people complain about Bo, that he was too stuck in the past, the offense needed to evolve, etc etc. Point is, there will always be people who complain. Maybe they honestly think they could do better. Maybe they paint their lawns so their grass really IS greener. Maybe their Moms didnt hug them enough. Oh well. Sucks to be them.

for saying this season wasn't great. It wasn't. We lost two of the three games which we knew would define the season, we lost to a Florida State team with a redshirt freshman quarterback, and the Orange bowl didn't feel close for 80% of the time. We had a roster stacked with seniors, and many of those seniors will be NFL players. Everyone in the preseason HTTV article said that 12 or 11 wins was the expcetation, but we won ten. This was a good season, but it wasn't great.
I believe Harbaugh is building a great team here, but we fell short of our goals this year. Saying so isn't treasonous.

with Coach Harbaugh at the helm. No, the end of the season didn't follow the script but this is just the beginning; once he gets more of his players on the team, Woah Nelly!
January 2nd, 2017 at 9:39 AM ^
They had missed the playoffs 8 straight years before he showed up - they didn't even have a winning season over that span.
You have to go all the way back to Steve Mariucci.

Apparently Charlie Waffles disagrees with you. Hard to know what his reason for negging the OP was, since he didn't deign to say why. Maybe he's angar because Harbaugh isn't being held accountable. Or something.

January 2nd, 2017 at 10:09 AM ^
And there are still options available, aren't there? Didn't UConn just fire their coach with no plan in place? He could go there for a year until the jobs are open next year.
January 2nd, 2017 at 10:31 AM ^
UConn hired Randy Edsall again. They're getting the band back together.
Although as Mike Price would tell you, you're not really hired until everyone has signed the contract.
January 2nd, 2017 at 3:48 PM ^
Or, as Charlie Weiss would tell you, everyone signed the contract. No take-back-sies!

Please don't tell me to be an OC. Or at least a college OC.
Why would he do that when he can be a head coach?
He can do the booth for a year and go around to campuses meeting with coaches as a consultant like Briles did as well.

He'll probably take a year to go do some commentary, but every college program looking for a new head man after the 2017 season will be kicking his door down to hire him. Auburn or Notre Dame might take a run at him depending on how their next season goes.
