Jay Harbaugh to Chargers
February 1st, 2024 at 4:36 PM ^
Took long enough. This has been the slowest process ever for literally no reason.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:39 PM ^
not every decision needs to be communicated to you immediately.
February 1st, 2024 at 5:05 PM ^
As of yesterday Jay was still handing out offers so I'd say this is a bit more than us just not being in the know.
February 1st, 2024 at 9:40 PM ^
I also expect he told those he offered that he was at least highly considering going to LA. I imagine he unwrites his dad’s forthrightness about his future plans
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:35 AM ^
Funny, that's not at all what people said when Harbaugh wanted to pursue his nfl options.
People kept repeating "this has to end and now."
February 1st, 2024 at 4:45 PM ^
Yeah, it's definitely been frustrating that it's been this painful trickle of info. Sure, there's negotiations to do and such but ugh.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:46 PM ^
I don’t understand why it’s taking so long to lock up at least the current staff members? I can get a couple of positions where we have vacancies but you’d think assistants like Bellamy, Campbell, Clink and Elston would already be locked up. Not all of these are moving into coordinator roles so lock the ones up that are going to be positional coaches and the go after the vacancies and coordinators.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:52 PM ^
Honestly if Harbaugh took Bellamy I wouldn’t be mad at all.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:59 PM ^
His WR recruiting would probably equal there.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:59 PM ^
Campbell at least is still under contract for another year. Signed a 2-year deal in February of 23.
I believe Clink and Elston are still under contract through 2025.
February 1st, 2024 at 5:24 PM ^
I mean, are any of those guys not under contract now? Honest question. They're clearly still out working and I assume they're doing so because they're under contract.
February 3rd, 2024 at 9:47 PM ^
Guessing that when the HC leaves, it doesn’t void everyone else’s contracts.
February 1st, 2024 at 6:24 PM ^
I would think the coordinators need to be hired first and then they can have a say who they want working with them? I could be wrong though.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:55 PM ^
maybe the job had to be posted for 7 days...
February 1st, 2024 at 5:29 PM ^
The degree of neurotic entitlement here is. . . impressive. Sherrone was hired six days ago. Hell knows, he might even want to think about it. Spend careful time working these things out.
February 1st, 2024 at 6:38 PM ^
From the day Saban announced his retirement, I believe Bama was fully staffed, if not close, within 5 days
February 1st, 2024 at 6:43 PM ^
Well, it helped Alabama that Saban didn't go to an NFL team and immediately begin poaching members of Alabama's remaining staff.
February 1st, 2024 at 7:07 PM ^
UM>>Bama
February 1st, 2024 at 7:37 PM ^
And Bama also lost key contributors to the portal. To be honest, I'd rather lose coaches than players.
February 1st, 2024 at 8:57 PM ^
1. We kicked bama's ass.
2. Saban likely knew he was done and told those that needed to know.
3. Bama doesn't operate like UM so either get used to it or get over it.
February 1st, 2024 at 11:38 PM ^
Bama knew he was retiring in the fall.
February 1st, 2024 at 7:37 PM ^
During his press conference today in LA, Jim didn't confirm the hiring of Minter or his son. Not that I don't expect that they won't be, he just didn't confirm it.
And he did confirm Herbert's hire.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:39 PM ^
Missed opportunity for Jay to leave the nest, or coop as it were for the Harbaughs.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:53 PM ^
Just like NFL strength coaches aren’t a thing
February 1st, 2024 at 6:08 PM ^
No one said they weren't a thing. What was said was that going to be a strength coach in the NFL is a step down. The money and impact made for that position is at the college level. Top NFL guy was making $750kish ballpark.
February 1st, 2024 at 6:39 PM ^
Was. Until Herbert showed up
February 1st, 2024 at 4:39 PM ^
Good for him and good luck Jay
February 1st, 2024 at 4:41 PM ^
Not necessarily about Jay in particular but I have a question for the “They just won a title crowd”, how long does that last? 1 year? 5 years? Were the Rich Rod years okay because there was a title in 97?
Why can two things not be true? It is great to have a title and celebrate while at the same time expressing concern for the future.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:45 PM ^
For me, I'd like there to at least be another game played before my focus shifts to doom and gloom. I'm basically in we'll see what happens mode until then
February 1st, 2024 at 6:22 PM ^
Good lord--can we get to Spring ball at least?
February 1st, 2024 at 7:15 PM ^
I'm with you there, but I also am in favor of discussing everything that's happening.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:46 PM ^
I was a teenager when they won in 97. I only had about 8-9 years of conscious Michigan fandom at that point.
I'm in my 40s now, and just spent the last 26 years (well over half my life) cheering for a team that seemed to be unable win the big one.
Well, they just won the biggest one. As far as I'm concerned, I'm good for life. You all can do all the panicking about the little things going forward. Me? Consider me good. Anything else good on top of this going forward is just icing on the cake.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:58 PM ^
Until next week.......; )
February 1st, 2024 at 4:58 PM ^
Almost exactly the same here.
I'm not sure many people appreciate the improbability of this year's championship.
I'm looking forward to following a new regime (Sherrone's).
February 1st, 2024 at 4:59 PM ^
I'm just hoping it's not another 26 years before we win another one. I'll be 74 yo then and still probably whining on MGoBlog lol...
February 1st, 2024 at 5:26 PM ^
Yeah, well some of us will be dead.
February 1st, 2024 at 7:17 PM ^
If you can hang on just a little bit longer, we'll upload your consciousness to MGoBlog.
February 1st, 2024 at 11:07 PM ^
Oh, that's just great. Reminds me of a James Tiptree story...
Must he and all dead life be borne back each time helplessly to suffer, to jerk anew on the same knives and die again until another energy exhumes him for the next performance?
February 1st, 2024 at 7:22 PM ^
Eat at Arby’s.
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:21 AM ^
"Sir, this is a Wendy's."
February 2nd, 2024 at 12:12 AM ^
Yep! In 26 years I'll be 86 or dead. Hopefully, I'm not 86 and in severe pain or had develop dementia!
February 2nd, 2024 at 8:53 AM ^
Yeah, I'll probably either be taking a dirt nap or coloring with crayons in a senior home by then. But at least I'll have seen two national championships in my time as a Michigan fan.
February 1st, 2024 at 8:03 PM ^
Still no functioning mobile app and points don’t work in 2050….
February 1st, 2024 at 5:19 PM ^
After 1997, seeing as how Michigan hadn't won since the 1940s, I figured I'd be good for life. What brought me down were the losing streaks to Ohio. Carr didn't have it any more, I was willing to give RichRod a chance (even thought he deserved 1 more year), then Hoke gave momentary hope, but then Meyer kept winning, and then Day. And again, I thought Harbaugh deserved a chance after the Covid year.
Then Harbaugh pledged "we're gonna do it, or die trying", and the last three years happened, gloriously. I doubt the regular season games will ever have the same sting or joy to them (for me, at least) with the expanded playoffs. So I again think I'm good for life. Ask me again, however, if Ohio ever beats us 6 or more times in a row.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:46 PM ^
I mean, a hell of a lot more time than a couple weeks. Jesus, some of you really aren't capable of enjoying shit are you?
Things aren't 100% perfect. But if you're not still walking on air I feel bad for you.
February 1st, 2024 at 4:55 PM ^
I remember in 2021 we were very concerned about Giles Jackson and staff moves like Mo Linguist, and that was after a pretty demoralizing season. In 2022 we were worried about Gattis and Macdonald. Obviously, different today with Harbaugh, but also we know Moore was an architect of that too and a good gameday coach.
I'll be happy about this natty until at least August. First game I'll set my expectations for this season, and my hope for every team used to be the Big Ten 'ship but moving forward it'll be a playoff appearance, and of course the result of our rivalry games. So...when I think we're falling off that mark - which won't happen until the first game - my concerns will be more than just a head cocked to the side.
That or a starter transfers. I'd be more than just concerned at that point.
February 1st, 2024 at 5:41 PM ^
Remember when there was a lot of grousing about Sherrone Moore being moved from TE coach to offensive line? There were a lot who thought the loss of Warinner was going to be significant, and he was being replaced by some random new guy, ie SM. The result? Two Joe Moore awards, and a third line that probably deserved it. Point is, we don’t know what’s going to happen. Period. We’ll just have to wait until next season.
In regards to Jaybaugh, this has been in the works for a while. My son’s friend works for the Jaybaughs-she was informed 3 weeks ago (yes, before the Chargers hire was announced) that her services were not going to be needed because they were moving to LA. No idea why Jaybaugh hire wasn’t announced earlier.
February 1st, 2024 at 5:43 PM ^
Adding to this - I think in 2006 and 2007 I entered the season wanting a natty. Same in 2016. The only other year I've thought this way since becoming a fan in 2004 was this year. Most years a good season would be beating Ohio and/or winning the Big Ten - something we didn't do in my fandom until 2021.
So...I'm very happy. From 2014-2020, the kings of the sport were Bama, Clemson and OSU - in that order. From '21-23, it's just us and UGA - and unlike them, we didn't lose to Bama. I care about next year but I am still just enjoying my victory lap. WE ARE THAT TEAM. and it's not a one-off, we are undoubtedly one of the 2 best programs in post-Covid CFB. We had a freaking era. Would love to keep it going, but we are that team right now. And this was an all-time great team and an all-time great defense. Yea, I'm going to enjoy it.
February 1st, 2024 at 5:06 PM ^
There are three sides to the fanbase on this. On one side you have the “I’ll be satisfied for the next 20 years over this title” and on another side you have the “sky is falling crowd and that title is now in the past” and in the middle you have the rest of us that are elated with the title but also see that Harbaugh is the one who got us there with Ravens d coordinators, there are portal changes, conference realignment, an antiquated university perspective on Nil, a lackadaisical AD, an incomplete staff currently and are genuinely curious how this thing is going to go in the next few years. The middle is where I’m at currently.
February 1st, 2024 at 6:40 PM ^
I think I fall solidly in between but I do not have anxiety about any of the things you listed. It's not because we won a championship, but because we're defending national champions. I also believe that Sherrone Moore had a lot to do with that and I'm optimistic about recruiting considering our national championship and the expectation of stability at head coach.
I'm middle aged and in my lifetime we have won just as many championships as Ohio State, despite their vastly superior roster for the majority of my life, 7 years of terrible coaches at Michigan, the COVID year, and the late Carr years when we were behind strategically. All things considering, things have worked out pretty well for Michigan recently.
I refuse to start prognosticating about the future until Sherrone has his staff put together, and I don't think that it's a crisis that he hasn't figured it out in a week.
