Newsome promoted to OL Coach

Not surprising but still good news!
January 29th, 2024 at 4:41 PM ^
Great news. Would have liked to seen "at Michigan" in the title to avoid the PTSD though.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:44 PM ^
Well, he wasn’t employed anywhere else so I figured that would be assumed by the word “promoted”… But hey, I'm sorry for the confusion my friend. 😊
January 29th, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
Very solid hire!
January 29th, 2024 at 6:16 PM ^
Abigail O’Connor also retained as Director of Football Performance Nutrition
January 29th, 2024 at 4:42 PM ^
So strange - it still seems like yesterday when he was a player here and had his knee destroyed by a wisc cheap shot.
I'm sure he'll do fine, but this is shaping to be a *very* inexperienced staff.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:43 PM ^
Sure, but the upside is sometimes a youth movement can help with recruiting. Newsome was absolutely the right choice in this case.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:46 PM ^
Newsome had many career opportunities. Highly intelligent man. He chose to coach football. He will be a great OL coach
January 29th, 2024 at 5:06 PM ^
Harbaugh won a cage match against Rep. Debbie Dingell (metaphorically, I know with Harbaugh that's unclear) for him.
January 29th, 2024 at 6:17 PM ^
I’m really not sure why anyone would want to go into politics right now. No matter if you’re left or right it’s an absolutely miserable field to work in right now
Grant made the right choice
January 29th, 2024 at 6:50 PM ^
Word at Schembechler is that Newsome is somewhat of a football savant. Could see him growing into an OC role rather quickly, like Sherrone
January 29th, 2024 at 8:51 PM ^
I forgot who said it, but a few years back someone close to the program or on staff said that Newsome was either going to end up a head coach or US senator. He turned down a job at Goldman Sachs to become a coach
January 29th, 2024 at 8:37 PM ^
Plus, Sherrone played OL and coached two Joe Moore award winning offensive lines. Who Sherrone decides is the best person to coach the OL should be the least of anyone's concern.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:45 PM ^
I have a high degree of confidence in Newsome, but I agree that lots of "level ups" in one year carries risk.
January 31st, 2024 at 10:28 PM ^
Moore probably hasn't had a lot of choice in the matter. Because Harbaugh took so much time to finally leave, and then took a lion's share of the staff with him, Moore was essentially left with table scraps. Plus, Moore doesn't have a lot of experience outside of Michigan and Louisville, so he hasn't had much chance to network.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:48 PM ^
This is part of why I really don't want to lose either Hart/Elston to the Chargers.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:48 PM ^
True, but its not like we promoted an analyst who played LB in college to O-line coach.
He'll be coaching a position he played at a high level, and Sherrone is still here to provide guidance if needed.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:56 PM ^
Grant didn't play *that much* at a "high level"... he played five games as a freshman and then 1+ month as a sophomore starter until he suffered the career ending injury.
This isn't exactly Jon Jansen, Jake Long, Graham Glasgow or some other long experienced guy coming back to teach OL.
Again - he's probably a great young coach, but he's not teaching from a wealth of personal experience.
January 29th, 2024 at 5:21 PM ^
I get the argument to an extent but Sherrone Moore only played 14 games at guard for OU in his career while Newsome played 10 at UM, including 5 starts before being hurt. He's not a neophyte.
January 29th, 2024 at 6:06 PM ^
Moore also had what, 1-2 years playing OL at the college level *before* coming to OU?
A bit more experienced... but also on the inexperienced side (in the greater FBS context).
January 29th, 2024 at 6:59 PM ^
He played at the JuCo level, but yeah he had more general experience but I'd argue Newsome had the higher ceiling and only played fewer games because of injury.
My larger point is Newsome doesn't strike me as inexperienced as much as quite young.
January 29th, 2024 at 7:20 PM ^
I would say it's both: (somewhat) inexperienced and (relatively) youthful.
That doesn't mean he's the "wrong" choice... just facts about the current status on his career path.
January 29th, 2024 at 5:34 PM ^
IIRC in those 5 games he was on pace to have an All-Big Ten season before the dirty hit. And like you said, only a sophomore. He worked his ass off to come back it just wasn't in the cards physically. There is a reason Harbaugh took him on as a GA and promoted him as he earned it.
January 29th, 2024 at 6:09 PM ^
Absolutely - Newsome had an amazing trajectory for his playing career. He *should* be in the NFL playing now.
I'm just saying, *compared to other OL coaches around FBS*, Newsome is on the extreme inexperienced side.
It might work out yet. I 100% hope it works out well.
January 29th, 2024 at 5:55 PM ^
If the yardstick is playing experience neither Jay nor Jessie have much of a pedigree either.
January 29th, 2024 at 6:22 PM ^
Mike Macdonald played zero (0) snaps above high school and was 33 when he was hired here as DC.
If you know ball it doesn’t really matter how much you played
January 29th, 2024 at 7:21 PM ^
I would argue that is a very atypical example, in both college and NFL.
January 30th, 2024 at 12:13 PM ^
I think we're seeing analytics on the ascendancy for OCs and DCs. You can be an analyst for a couple of years and become a coordinator/play caller because you don't actually have to know how to play a position beyond the mechanics. ...but for a position coach, I think it helps to have someone who can actually do the techniques.
January 30th, 2024 at 7:43 AM ^
* checks notes * Grant play zero Games at TE and did a good job. Having Moore there to help is important, this was the right move and couldn't be happier for Grant
January 29th, 2024 at 6:44 PM ^
Plus he coached on a national championship team with great chemistry. Keep as much of that as possible. Never heard anything but great things about him.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:51 PM ^
Newsome has Moore-level buzz around him. Said to be decent recruiter because of his age, and good communicator. Harbs loved him too. He is exactly the type of coach you keep around, develop and promote. Plus if we keep guys like Elston (and you combine that with the HC being a former Line coach himself), he has built in mentorship/help on staff.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:53 PM ^
do you want continuity or not? part of keeping the greatest number of people here possible is going to be promoting them. If this is what we want, we need to accept that it might result in some inexperienced position coaches
January 29th, 2024 at 5:00 PM ^
Hard to say - there probably is no single "correct" answer. Continuity can be good, change can be good... it all depends on *who* it is.
Let's hope it all works.
January 29th, 2024 at 5:18 PM ^
This spot is an area that makes lots of sense to me. Moore is the old OL coach, which means that there’s tons of institutional knowledge still in the room. He is the HC, which means that he doesn’t have time to coach OL himself, but he’s still nearby and can ensure that the OL continues to be taught the way he wants it. And Newsome *has* been on the staff for a while, learning; I have no inside knowledge on this, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he were already helping out a bit here, especially when Sherrone got tapped to HC in the last three games. So this seems like a sensible step up that they’ve prepared him for. Honestly, his credentials to coach OL are at least as good as Moore’s when Moore took over for 2021.
This is one of the most sensible in-house promotions I can think of. I’m more concerned about the D, since a lot of the knowledge is gone.
January 29th, 2024 at 6:37 PM ^
You know something about Clinkscale that we don't?
January 29th, 2024 at 5:22 PM ^
Newsome + Moore is pretty damned experienced. They were creating these award winning lines not anyone else on the staff. The other positions are yet to be seen but I think Newsome has been groomed for this.
That makes the rumor mill 0-1 on the day.
January 29th, 2024 at 6:09 PM ^
He played the position, and is coming from coaching tight ends. Which is relevant considering the tight ends are heavily incorporated in the blocking schemes. Also of note, that’s the same path Sherrone Moore took.
Tight Ends —-> OL
Also, Moore is there. I’m sure if Newsome needs any tips or pointers, Moore would gladly help out.
January 30th, 2024 at 9:31 AM ^
The Harbaugh coaching tree seems pretty great. Newsome has spent his entire coaching life under Harbaugh, who has very strong feelings about OL play and seems to be a big fan of Grant.
“Grant has been a positive, motivating force within our coaching staff since he joined us as a student assistant,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said in a statement. “We have had a front-row seat to Grant’s development as a coach and are excited that he has chosen to accept our offer to become a full-time assistant. He is a future star in this profession, and our players really respect what Grant is teaching on the field and the insight that he shares from life experiences.”
January 29th, 2024 at 4:43 PM ^
Luckily Warde didn’t manage to bungle this one.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:49 PM ^
beyond tedious
January 29th, 2024 at 5:00 PM ^
In the posters defense, we do not know if he didn't try to bungle this.
January 29th, 2024 at 5:18 PM ^
When its stops being true people will stop pointing it out. Right now this this the exception to the rule. Meanwhile ohio is doing push ups in the parking lot and the citizens are raising whatever money they can spare to make sure the past 3 years don’t happen ever again. What’s Warde doing to beat ohio today?
January 29th, 2024 at 6:39 PM ^
Ohio State is doing literally exactly the same thing they've always done: stockpile talent and hope it doesn't need much developing. Spare me.
January 29th, 2024 at 6:59 PM ^
Nothing is "true" here. It's all speculation. People trying to connect dots. May be right, may be wrong. We literally don't know why Herbert left, for example. It could've been the call of the NFL and the chance to continue to work with Harbaugh, who may have promised him an expanded role, given that a lot of the culture at Michigan has been attributed to him. It may have very little to do with not being offered a 10 year contract to stay, if that even happened.
January 29th, 2024 at 5:15 PM ^
It's likely because he came cheap so it was easy to say he's for Warde.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:44 PM ^
Good news. Need to get these staff members locked up quickly to try to stave off these leeches from other programs. Instead of focusing on Herbert, everyone needs to hype up Tress. All this doomsdaying can’t be helping recruiting or roster retention.
January 29th, 2024 at 4:55 PM ^
I would like to see some news on defense, though, since that is where the greatest risks are. I do not like seeing Grant follow Texas players and staff with absolutely no info on Elston forthcoming
January 29th, 2024 at 5:09 PM ^
Saw that too. That would be my next hire. I’d get DC locked down and recruit my current players first and the portal second. 24,25 and beyond can wait until the entire staff is ready as long as it doesn’t take real long.
January 29th, 2024 at 5:19 PM ^
Wasn’t grant at the basketball game with Sherrone?
January 29th, 2024 at 5:39 PM ^
He was sitting next to him, holding a Michigan flag.
Hopefully we have to Spring ball to get NIL in shape and keep the vultures at bay.
