Trente Jones declares for NFL
January 15th, 2024 at 2:14 PM ^
That’s surprising

“With that being said…”

That's disappointing. I'd BET more on upgrading my draft status were I he.
And to be honest he's probably going to make less in the NFL in 2024 than he would in NIL.
This is the closest to the Chris Hinton decision I've seen since then. A bad business decision.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:47 PM ^
Not even close.
Trente would have been a 6th year senior. Hinton was a junior - one who would have gotten usurped by Mazi Smith and Kris Jenkins the next year anyway. Using that example sort of shows you have no idea if this is a "bad business decision" or not.
Posters here criticizing a dude that just balled out for not coming back for college as a 24-year-old is insane to me.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:54 PM ^
But is Trente really considering what's best for me??
January 15th, 2024 at 3:15 PM ^
Yeah, how selfish of him...
OK, in all seriousness, every player from the 2023 Wolverines has what I call "Janice Rossi Status" (think GoodFellas, with Henry and Jimmy beating on Henry's mistress, yelling "Janice can do whatever she wants... GOT IT??")
BUT, I am legitimately surprised this time as Trente seemed prime to emerge into a top option next year.
So be it. Janice Rossi status and all...

Between 20-30 offensive tackles will get drafted. With all due respect to Trente, he is definitely not in the top 30 of draft rankings at his position. The chances of him getting drafted are pretty damn slim.
From a "business" standpoint, it would almost certainly improve his draft stock to show what he can do as a starter all year and hopefully actually get drafted.
January 15th, 2024 at 3:24 PM ^
Yep, i do not get this one at all. He was not a starter for us (until injury provided him with starts). But yeah, he is ready for the NFL.
He would have been the stud next year, and learned so much. His draft stock would have been so much higher. I do not get it.
January 15th, 2024 at 4:18 PM ^
He looked pretty darn good when he came in after Zinter went down, enough to think he will make a NFL roster. But yes wish he'd stay
January 15th, 2024 at 7:06 PM ^
His pass pro was awful just as bad as 73's. Neither could protect JJ in the Washington game (although Jones was decent vs Bama) both got beat easily several times immediately which got JJ lit up. This to me is the #1 reason we couldn't do play action down the stretch. I believe 53 got Cade injured too.
Now having said that 53 is an incredible run blocker with excellent length, to me, he just needs reps.
I believe he's probably wanting NIL and hopefully he's just negotiating but idk
January 15th, 2024 at 8:22 PM ^
So if that true what is going to change in his 18th year on campus? At some point a guy is a guy. 22 year old guy is not going to suddenly change into Trent williams at age 23 despite the protests on this board.
"He needs reps" - an amazing coaching staff got to see him for 5 effin years. He got reps daily. He is what he is. Wish he came back but this nonsense these guys will take major leaps in age 23 are just that. By year 2 most players not on a line will show what they are. No one is taking a huge leap in year 6. Hell Grant and Graham even on the line showed out in year 2.
January 15th, 2024 at 5:37 PM ^
He should've been a starter all year if the coaches knew what they were doing!
/s just in case it's not obvious
January 15th, 2024 at 6:25 PM ^
Lose the /s - he was quite clearly a better OT than Barnhart. Barnhart did perform admirably at OG!
January 15th, 2024 at 5:52 PM ^
His pro football focus grades stack up very well. I'm betting that he makes a roster. Great kid too.
January 15th, 2024 at 6:26 PM ^
Trente would fit the Niners scheme beautifully - but strongly doubt they take him before the 5th
The upside is how well they've done picking 5th rounders!
January 15th, 2024 at 6:57 PM ^
Guys declare it's our job to sit them down with the NIL cannon and bring them back. At least that's what's happening at other schools. No, I haven't seen Michigan do that but it's possible.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:20 PM ^
If only he had film against Alabama for the NFL to review which is akin to Georgia as the closest 2 defenses that are NFL like (aside Michigan this year). Oh and practiced against an NFL defense daily.
January 15th, 2024 at 6:23 PM ^
Sorry you're so bitter van, but if you bothered to read what you so readily bashed, I said I believe Michigan NIL could well surpass what he's likely to earn in the NFL at his draft slot. I haven't said this about any other who's declared for the draft, nor said any who've entered the portal should've stayed.
In addition, with a full year as starter he would have the opportunity to greatly improve his draft stock. In other words turning down a chance to get paid to increase his value. Ergo, bad business decision.
In fact, your assessment that Chris Hinton "bailed" because he would certainly, in your view, have been surpassed by others actually gives me optimism Trente may feel exactly the same!
January 15th, 2024 at 3:01 PM ^
Would he have made $800k in NIL in 2024? Even a practice squad player in the NFL will make over $200k for a full season.
January 15th, 2024 at 3:51 PM ^
Hunter Dickinson and Blake Corum made 30K in NIL FWIW. I got this from someone who works with Michigan in NIL.
January 15th, 2024 at 4:10 PM ^
How did Blake buy an apartment building and start the charitable foundation on only $30,000?
January 15th, 2024 at 8:25 PM ^
Vacuum cleaner sales - RCMB and 11Warriors
January 15th, 2024 at 10:04 PM ^
Don't shoot the messenger. This is what he told me and his company works closely with Michigan in NIL. They have agents and lawyers navigating it for the student-athletes.
There's no chance that Trente would've earned more money than being a PS. He's an OL and OL isn't marketable.
January 15th, 2024 at 3:27 PM ^
Sometimes guys are just ready to move on. And I’m sure he’s in a mindset where he wants to bet on himself.
The good thing is we have guys waiting in the wings on the offensive line and they should be ready.
January 15th, 2024 at 3:44 PM ^
boy the dumb shit people say on the internet, huh?
January 15th, 2024 at 4:23 PM ^
NFL rookie minimum is $750k per year. You think he was making more than that in NIL??? Based on what we know of Michigan's NIL, that's delusional.
January 15th, 2024 at 6:31 PM ^
Then I guess the question is how high could a year of starting have gotten him in the draft?
I've heard JJ made a lot in NIL, hard to believe Blake got 30K!
And the pot is sweetening. Certainly hope it is!
January 15th, 2024 at 7:29 PM ^
JJ might have made a million. He's also the starting QB and a very recognizable and marketable name. Trent Jones, currently, is not. I think he probably should have come back and improved his stock as a starter, but the idea that these guys are going to make more with Michigan's NIL than they would in the NFL is frankly ridiculous.
January 15th, 2024 at 8:26 PM ^
Yep go see the powerpoint slide posted a few days ago. Michigan is in tier 3 slugging it out with vanderbilt on NIL. $750K is a fifth of their damn budget sadly.
January 16th, 2024 at 3:51 AM ^
But...but...but...The MONEY CANNON!!!
January 15th, 2024 at 2:45 PM ^
A very bad surprise. He would have been the only returning starter with an opportunity to really show what he could do. Mystifying.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:51 PM ^
Agreed, I don't really know what's been going on with off field rumors, but seems like he would've come back and likely been almost guaranteed the starting RT job. He performed well the last 4 games of the year, but having a full year of tape and NIL probably would've been a better option than probably going in the late rounds this year. I guess Gentry - El Hadi - Crippen - Priebe - Hinton it is
January 15th, 2024 at 4:19 PM ^
Who is Preibe ? I haven't even heard of him today and now he's slated to start?
January 15th, 2024 at 4:50 PM ^
Transfer coming from Northwestern
January 15th, 2024 at 6:32 PM ^
At least no one negged you for asking!
January 15th, 2024 at 4:23 PM ^
That looks like the correct starting five going into Spring Training. The only one I question is Gentry as have not seen info that says he has the mobility and athletecism to block the blind side. He was a top recruit so hopefully will fit there.
January 15th, 2024 at 4:06 PM ^
Minor threadjack… does anyone have UFR or PFF grades and snap counts for all players and games? Would love to try to quantify how much production we’re losing.
January 15th, 2024 at 4:49 PM ^
Man I really wanted Trente back and I do think another year would have been great for him.
However, his tape against PSU, OSU, Alabama and Washington is probably off the charts really good and maybe that is all he needed to make this decision.
I wish him all the best. He was my favorite player on this team down the stretch.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:15 PM ^
Maybe a sign that offensive coaches might be changing? Hope not.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:24 PM ^
Don’t know why you would get downvoted but that absolutely looks plausible. Harbaugh is definitely gone and that shakes everything up
January 15th, 2024 at 2:26 PM ^
Definitely gone?
I hate posts like this.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:27 PM ^
"Harbaugh is definitely gone"
Uhhh, no. He might leave. No more smoke than any other off-season and he hasn't left yet.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:29 PM ^
He would have if he got an offer. It isn't up to Harbaugh, its whether the NFL wants him or not. If they offer he's gone
January 15th, 2024 at 2:35 PM ^
You’re right. Isn’t up to Harbaugh at all.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:36 PM ^
Denver offered him last year
January 15th, 2024 at 5:56 PM ^
It isn’t up to Harbaugh if he leaves for the NFL? What is the NFL, the mob?
I know you’re an idiot. That much I’m sure of.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:55 PM ^
Denial, denial, denial.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:31 PM ^
-250 to stay at Michigan on DK.
Gone down slightly in the last couple days, but by all means go take Vegas’s money if you think they don’t know better.
January 15th, 2024 at 2:33 PM ^
oh, do better.
