Carter Smith (UM '25 QB commit) named Gatorade Player of the Year in Florida
Per Brice Marich. In total, Smith accounted for 48 TDs on the year.
It's one thing to be named player of the year in such a talent-rich state like Florida. It's another thing to accomplish that as a junior!
Regardless of what happens with Underwood, I think we've bagged a winner in the '25 class.

Gotta wear Shades man!
January 3rd, 2024 at 2:49 PM ^
...but will he get more stars?
January 3rd, 2024 at 3:25 PM ^
...and how's his pad level?
January 3rd, 2024 at 3:42 PM ^
how fluid are his hips?
January 3rd, 2024 at 6:07 PM ^
Does he play with great leverage?

Great ankle flexion.

247 still has him at an 89 score and 39th in the state that he was just ranked #1 by those who see him every week.
Our scouting (not to mention development) is an order of magnitude better than the recruiting "services" (they serve only themselves).

Hopefully this is a reprise of what happened with Mason Graham, who was the Los Angeles Times Player of the Year, but was an underrated recruit (ranked 19th in the state by the 247 composite).

That is a fantastic profile picture. How long have you had that?
January 3rd, 2024 at 6:15 PM ^
Sometimes I wonder why people seem to put more stock in recruiting services evaluations than those made by coaching staffs. Have any of the services ' evaluators ever played or coached college football at a high level?
I regard them as infotainment.

Coaches offer a lot of guys and never tell us how they rank them. Simple as that, if we had the Harbaugh recruiting rankings handy, you wouldn't see composite scores on this site
January 3rd, 2024 at 6:54 PM ^
Well coaches aren’t exactly putting out their evaluations on all of these players. They hand out a ton of offers and we never really get a pecking order on who they think is the best. There’s also a variety of reasons a coach WON’T offer a player, even an elite one.
We really only hear about the recruitments of players who reciprocate interest with the staff. Coaches sometimes won’t even offer a kid they feel isn’t going to be interested, it’s not worth the wasted time and effort.
There are four 5* QBs in this class, only two were offered by Michigan and neither of them were recruitments Michigan was involved in. Are we supposed to assume Harbaugh thinks two of them are no good and the other two weren’t worth pursuing? Or can we acknowledge that we received reciprocal interest from another QB and chose to make that the primary focus? Point being, Michigan taking a commitment from Jadyn Davis and prioritizing him during the recruiting process doesn’t mean Michigan thinks he’s the best QB in the class.
So unless you have a list of recruits ranked by college football coaches, seems like all we have to go on is recruiting sites.

Im not saying this is necessarily the case here, but much like you can be a phenomenal college player and not translate as a pro player, the same can be true for high school to college.
An elite WR in high school still relies on a competent QB to get him the ball. The offensive scheme you play in is a factor as well.
Cameron Martinez won the Mr. Michigan football award as a QB over Andrel Anthony and Donovan Edwards. Cam Martinez went to OSU as a safety and just entered the transfer portal. These awards are about who had the best season, not who is going to be the best player at the next level.

This is different though. Martinez won as a QB, knowing he would never be a QB at the college level. And he won Michigan football player of the year which makes him about the 30th best Florida player in a great year. Smith won the award, as a junior, playing the same position he will in college. And everything he does translates. Don’t be surprised when he moves up to a top 100 player.

Come on down…

Let's Go!
QB U!
Go Blue!

What else would you expect from a Michigan commit named (Anthony) Carter (Steve) Smith?
January 3rd, 2024 at 3:38 PM ^
I live in the area and this guy is great. Leads the team with Rushing TD's too.
January 3rd, 2024 at 6:34 PM ^
Wow! So he pitches the ball back to his RB and is the lead blocker around the corner-and sends an LB flying on his butt... and continues on-looking for the next defender to flatten. The kid is a football player!
January 3rd, 2024 at 3:45 PM ^
Let's focus on players that want to play here, especially when they are good!
January 3rd, 2024 at 4:13 PM ^
Glad he's coming to Quarterback U then.
January 3rd, 2024 at 4:14 PM ^
Prediction: Smith will get to a 95 rating.
January 3rd, 2024 at 4:23 PM ^
Agreed. And someone who wants to be in Ann Arbor. Underwood may be able to play early but there will be a learning curve if people are fronting money and top of depth chart.

His highlights look a lot like JJ. He is a good athlete who throws very well on the move. The immediate is bright and the future is bright. It is great to be...
January 3rd, 2024 at 5:04 PM ^
maybe, i dont know as i only saw his brief highlights on this site. he looked ok.
i do know mccarthy has always been accurate and always had excellent mechanics. add to his athletic ability and demeanor, its easy to see why mccarthy was highly touted

we've bagged a winner
C'mon, everybody knows Michigan doesn't hand out bags.
January 3rd, 2024 at 5:06 PM ^
Carter Smith sounds like a character in an Edgar Rice Burroughs novel.
January 3rd, 2024 at 5:34 PM ^
Because he committed to Michigan, he will drop in ranking just like Davis from the so-called "experts".
In all seriousness, I love the two quarterbacks Michigan has gotten commits from in back to back recruiting classes.
January 3rd, 2024 at 6:42 PM ^
And it works out nice spacing wise.
If JJ comes back (I know that is probably 50/50) can play Davis as much as possible this year and who cares about a redshirt.
This kid comes in in 25..Davis is a SO and redshirt Carter so he is a redshirt FR in Davis' Junior year (2026) so it gives him time to work on delivery and then play him some in 26

Player of the year in Florida is a 5 star in my book
