*Assuming* this is accurate, we don't have as much of the top draft talent as our biggest opponents this year, but we still found a way to win. We should have a lot of Round 3 through 7 players get drafted.
Zinter would have been a top 2 round guy.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:40 AM ^
He may still be.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:46 AM ^
Zinter will still go in top 2 rounds. He didn't tear any ligaments and was a clean break - "best" type of injury you can have. After rehab and regaining strength and flexibility, should have no long term effect. Should be completely back, at worst, midway through next season, but probably 90% much, much earlier.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:44 AM ^
Let's hope that's how it will playout.
December 26th, 2023 at 2:25 PM ^
I figured Zinter would have been late 1st round.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:30 AM ^
I heard that every Buckeye with available eligibility is returning to Columbus for another year.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
Is this sarcasm? Because that isn’t happening,
December 26th, 2023 at 10:49 AM ^
Not because they are enrolled at SKOOL.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:49 AM ^
I don't think it's sarcasm- in the sense that there have been OSU "insiders" claiming to expect all these people to return because of crazy NIL packages.
But I agree that it's definitely not happening.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:50 AM ^
Approximate annual value of rookie contract in parentheses. Unless a player expects a marked jump in draft status, seems like NIL would have to at least come close to this for a player to even entertain returning and even then player is leaving value in the table ( still 4 years away from 2nd contract, risk of failing draft stock...)
#3 MHJ WR ($10M)
#25 Emeka Egbuka WR ($3.5M)
#26 Michael Hall DT ($3.5 M)
#34 TreVeyon Henderson RB ($2.5M)
#38 JT Tuimoloau DE ($2.5M)
December 26th, 2023 at 11:47 AM ^
Also risk of injury.
December 26th, 2023 at 12:07 PM ^
Intended that that would be under falling draft stock, albeit a potentially extreme version thereof.
December 26th, 2023 at 1:34 PM ^
I preface this comment with I completely do not believe it. A relative who is a huge Buckeye fan claims there is a NIL package of around $20 million being constructed for Harrison Jr.
December 26th, 2023 at 1:20 PM ^
11w reporting Harrison with team but not practicing today. All other draft eligible juniors are practicing....
December 26th, 2023 at 11:35 AM ^
Fine by me. Michigan will get to give them another L in Columbus.
December 26th, 2023 at 1:35 PM ^
As of right now I would put:
MHJ (95% chance of leaving)
Burke (95% chance of leaving)
JTT (90%)
Sawyer (80%)
Egbuka (65%)
Stover (50%)
Henderson (40%)
December 26th, 2023 at 10:30 AM ^
ZZ is almost certainly a first or high second round pick. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Lions draft him as they will need a replacement for Jackson.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:49 AM ^
It would be fun to see him and Graham Glasgow playing together.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
Osu continues their tradition of accomplishing less with more!
December 26th, 2023 at 10:59 AM ^
Absolute paper tigers. Maybe Ryan Day really is just that shitty a coach, but if its not a WR, I'm not trusting OSU recruits.
JT and Sawyer? These guys getting drafted on their recruiting rankings? JT is a good run defender, average pass rusher.
How much better does he grade out than Jaylen Harrel?
Sawyer? Didn't hear his name once the past 3 years in the game.
Henderson is basically Donovan Edwards, but hurt more. Sprinter with meh vision.
Hall over Jenkins?, lol.
MHJ is legit a special talent - the rest are guys with great "potential"
December 26th, 2023 at 11:07 AM ^
I think you’re missing the fact that the NFL drafts largely on potential and measurables. Not college production.
You’re trying to compare Sawyer/JTT to Harrell… those guys are 20-30 lbs heavier than Harrell and are true DE’s. Harrell is basically a linebacker and the biggest knock on him has been his pass rushing ability. Not sure what we’re doing there.
OSU recruits guys who project as NFL players. Michigan recruits good football players and turn many of them into NFL players. I’d rather get the guys who win in college, I don’t really care if or where they’re drafted. But I don’t get the surprise when OSU gets more guys drafted early.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:16 AM ^
Coincidentally, osu recruits perfectly to this model - Lots of potential, just not productive of big wins.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:23 AM ^
I wouldn’t go as far as to say that. They’ve lost 3 in a row to Michigan, and we’ve essentially tailored our entire team around winning THAT game. We’ve been successful in doing so. OSU was also a shanked field goal from beating Georgia in the playoff last year and, in all likelihood, winning a national title.
They haven’t won fewer than 11 games (excluding going 7-1 in 2020) since 2011, and 2008 before that. They haven’t won fewer than 10 games since 2004. OSU has won a lot of games with their strategy, and won a lot of big games along the way. They’re an extremely talented program with a Michigan problem, not a winning one.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:40 AM ^
You're absolutely right. They're a great program. Which makes it even funnier to watch them tie themselves in knots about having a problem exclusively with Michigan. McCord went 12-1 as a starter and was basically run out of town to Syracuse for it! What a mess.
December 26th, 2023 at 12:01 PM ^
They would have been ion the 4 team playoffs every year for the last 3 except for Michigan beating them. And they may well have won one or more. Last year they would have beaten eventual champ Georgia if their field goal kicker was competent. They can play evenly with all the elite teams in the country. Except for Michigan, That makes it even more satisfying when we keep them out of the playoffs!
December 26th, 2023 at 11:41 AM ^
My point was exactly that. Harrell has been good against the run and a meh pass rusher. JT and Sawyer have been the same...therefore, Harrell is a much better value pick in round 5 or 6 than JT and Sawyer in round 1 or 2. If a DE hasn't flashed as an edge demon pass rusher in college, very unlikely it happens in the NFL.
IE. JT and Sawyer should go ahead of Harrell due to size and measurables, but don't give the value of a 1st or 2nd round edge.
Chop Robinson, on the other hand is worthy of a 1st round pick. He's no Micah Parsons, but he's disruptive as hell and teams need to plan for him.
The last truly impactful DE's at OSU were on Meyer's teams...both Bosa brothers and Chase Young.
Hutch and Ojabo are better than anything OSU has put in the league at DE the past 5 years.
December 26th, 2023 at 1:31 PM ^
But again, you’re basing your analysis of two (well, three) different players who play different positions on what their college production was like. Why are you comparing a quasi-linebacker to two true DEs in the first place? Apples to oranges.
You’re entirely ignoring that the NFL values measurables, they value potential, they value how you project to the NFL game. Not what you did in college.
You then go on to cite Hutchinson and Ojabo, who are exactly the type of athletic specimen/high potential guys the NFL craves. Not sure what you’re trying to say there.
December 26th, 2023 at 2:45 PM ^
Glass houses too - we had Rashan Gary who had college stats similar to those guys in college but has been unleashed in the pros and hit his potential. People wondered why he was drafted so high vs other guys with more college production - well some dudes in the NFL like the measurables as you cannot teach those.
As others have noted these 5* are special athletes. NFL GMs salivate other them. Many of them and coaches think they can get the most out of them as the ball of clay is bursting with potential. Jacksonville GM took Walker over Hutch based on that (Walker was a top 5 guy overall in his class)
Unrelated - I know he was a rental but who the hell had Mike Danna being such an impact NFL player on draft night?
December 26th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
Osu has all the talent and all the losses. You love to see it.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:42 AM ^
Charlie Campbell is a complete joke just like his pal Walt. Always claiming to have the most accurate mocks lol. They have zero sources. They always randomly refer to team sources they have no access to. They’ve been banned from the combine as well lol
JaCorey Brooks just transferred to Louisville after having a 3 catch 30 yard season for Bama. Always on top Chuckles keep those accurate mocks coming. Clown show
December 26th, 2023 at 10:43 AM ^
Fashanu is not falling to 11
December 26th, 2023 at 10:49 AM ^
Why? I don't understand. I don't think I've ever watched him be anything more than average but he gets insane hype.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:33 AM ^
He has given up 1 sack in 3 years. Stop it.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:41 AM ^
Did you watch their offense? They couldn't run the ball with two superstar RBs and they got the ball out quick because they couldn't pass block/had no WRs. Overrated.
December 26th, 2023 at 1:54 PM ^
I’ve watched Fashanu and that stat seems misleading. He’s let up a fair number of pressures and I’ve seen sacks that are his fault. Also, whenever he gets beat he just holds his guy to prevent a sack
December 26th, 2023 at 1:52 PM ^
He’s a good pass blocker but a pretty average run blocker. Dude has been riding draft hype inertia this whole year and is pretty overrated now imo
December 26th, 2023 at 10:50 AM ^
Fashanu is no Jake Long. He can easily fall into the teens. Excellent tackle, but not a no brainer pick.
December 26th, 2023 at 10:47 AM ^
-Checks Alabama twice *sigh* of relief no DT's listed in first (2) rounds of NFL draft.
December 26th, 2023 at 12:41 PM ^
You can’t go wrong with a Bama DB, I hope my Lions take Kool Aid in the 2nd.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:00 AM ^
How can Mikey not be in the top 2 rounds?
December 26th, 2023 at 11:27 AM ^
He’s a 5’10” (if that) nickel corner.
December 26th, 2023 at 12:00 PM ^
Yep, too short so he can't play outside in the NFL. Getting him drafted at all is a huge accomplishment. He's obviously going to blow away everyone with his football IQ, leadership, any kind of interview or written test, etc. But the measurables just aren't there to be drafted on day 1.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:09 AM ^
i'm already sick of mock drafts. four more months of yammering.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:26 AM ^
I like it.
JJ going #10 means we win it all and he lights it up in his final two Michigan games.
NFL GM's would be fools not to take Zak in the top 50.
December 26th, 2023 at 6:34 PM ^
I love Zak Zinter, but to me picking a guy who is seriously injured to end their college career in the first round is taking on risk that is too high. A big part of drafting high is taking players that are certainties. Coming off a major injury makes that certainty less, even with a great player like ZZ. See Williams, Jameson as one example.
Obviously, sometimes injuries heal and the player is great. That’s why it’s a risk question not a hard and fast certainty.
if I’m the Lions I’m thrilled to get ZZ in the 4th. That’s a great risk reward.
December 26th, 2023 at 11:54 AM ^
Even with his injury surprised Zinter is not in the top 2 rounds.
December 26th, 2023 at 12:04 PM ^
We have a ton of older players who have somewhat maximized their ability and don't have the same upside of talent. There was a lot of talk last year whether this was true for Hutch as well. We have a ton of players who will be drafted in rounds 3-7 and especially UDFAs
2025 though we will have a few at least 3 1st rounders though: Will Johnson, Graham, Grant.
Next year we will actually be loaded still - except for the mysterious position of QB. Will JJ come back? We will get a high end transfer? Could Jaden Davis be able to play as a Fr? Do we have that guy on the team already? Is it possible Orji could have a huge role and we'll look like a very different offense than this year? If we can answer this question, next year could be as big as this year.
December 26th, 2023 at 12:16 PM ^
If only coaching, culture and weight training had some effect. Nice rims seems to be working.
December 26th, 2023 at 12:45 PM ^
I would love to see the Lions draft draft Jenkins with their first pick.
December 26th, 2023 at 12:54 PM ^
The love for fashanu is bizarre. I don't understand other than the desperate need for tackles. So many teams have whiffed in desperation. 1a to the desperation for quarterbacks
