Who are the candidates to replace Juwan next year?

Michigan is not making the tournament this year and the team looks as bad as ever.  Who are the names to consider moving forward?

Beilein changed up his staff a few times along the way and that kept moving him along and successful here. Howard has kept the same staff the entire time, which is great for culture and continuity, but it’s not working. It could be Juwan, it could be his staff, we won’t know unless he makes changes, which should have been done after last season. He either needs to make major changes or he needs to go himself. You can have competitive teams in basketball and football.

That was the thing that surprised me in the offseason - they could have turned the staff over and that would have helped most likely.  It took Beilein a couple of years to do so; he didn't hire Yaklich despite the defense being bad for 2 years.  But Howard needs to if he wants to stick around.  Martelli in particular just doesn't make sense anymore.

This team has not been the same since the loss to Seton Hall two years ago which came on the same day Warde extended Howard's contract.  At the time it was obvious that Howard should get the extension, but after the season.  Warde seems hesitant to extend Harbaugh, but jumped the gun on extending Howard when he did.

Howard is a good coach, but not a great one.  I don't think NIL has anything to do with it, because he has had elite players play for him at Michigan with no beneficiaries of it in championships.

I do wonder if Howard and Warde come to a mutual understanding after the year given some of the struggles as well as Howard's health issues, which have absolutely affected this season to some degree, and Howard leaves.  The team has just looked lost out there for weeks now, and unless they suddenly have a turnaround it's looking like another bad year.  Maybe Warde and him give it one more go last year with major staff changes, but I thought they needed to do that this year and they didn't.  There's a tiny bit of me who'd point out that Harbaugh had some weird early struggles in close games and coaching staff and he obviously figured it out, but not to this degree and Harbaugh did try to mix it up more often.

I don't know who's the hot names but Byington at JMU is doing well, and I know Loyola Chicago has struggled a bit since they moved up to the A10 but that's a young guy who has won before.  Maybe there's some hot assistant as well?

Stick with Juwan until he decides to step down and then go with Martelli and start searching for a hotshot and Martelli will probably happily retire when we need him to.

Important to remember it's a team that hasn't played much together, and everyone is being asked to contribute more than what their history/profile suggest they're capable of. If it's ever going to work with the current roster construction, it's going to take time.

Regarding a coaching change, If M is going to do it, the end of this season seems to be the time for it. The roster is set to turn over almost completely after this year. Whether Coach Howard stays or goes, it's going to be a year zero for whoever's in charge.

Saw the first few games and they looked great.   Then I read they lost to Long Beach St and was confused....haven't seen a game since the St John's game.  What happened?  Is this when Juwan returned ?

from reading the the game wrap up.... I'm not sure how you can blame coach when we lost the game because we shot terribly from the field and missed clutch free throws down the line.

At some point, if you're losing by single digits and missing free throws, its on the players not executing, not on the coach.

Nate Oats or Luke Yaklich if Oats won't come to AA. Yaklich is in year 4 at UIC and his boys are playing some defense. Yaklich is definitely more of a risk, but you know the team will have an identity and be good at something.

I'd really like to see how this Michigan team comes together the rest of the season. I can remember many a Beilein team that was frustrating to watch in November and December and put it together in the back half of the season.

It's just frustrating watching this team struggle with the basics; free throw shooting, turnovers, and lack of rebounding/transition.

Not sure if we're gonna fire Juwan, but his health may make that irrelevant.

I was just saying to my brother during the game that this team needs Yaklich.  The Defense for the last couple years has been atrocious.  After the luxury of great D under Donlan and Yaklich during Beilein's tenure, watching these teams has been very frustrating.

If Oats would come, great, but Yaklich would be a good hire I think.

The University of Michigan should no longer hire coaches that do not have experience as a head coach. Hiring an inexperienced assistant is too risky.

Oh oh u are going to get into trouble for posting this. Very sensitive people on here when mentioning possible coaching replacements when it comes to Michigan coaches

Don't think he should be fired personally, Michigan needs to adapt to transfer portal.  The defensive issues are worrisome, but they have the personnel and I think it's really about chemistry and communication.  MSU is struggling too.

If he does get fired (and I'd understand if he was), there are definitely attractive candidates.  Given the NIL restrictions and the fact that this will always to a large extent be a basketball school, we need a coach that will emphasize spacing and take advantage of the kind of shooters we can get in the midwest while also being able to recruit sturdy bigs to handle the plodding Big Ten offenses (a lesson Beilein learned in time and that took Michigan to another level).

Wish list in tiers:

Tier 1: Make the call, don't expect them to take it

Nate Oats, HC Alabama

Bobby Hurley, HC UConn

Tier 2: Realistic gets that would still be close to a home run

Dusty May, HC Florida Atlantic

Tier 3: Solid hire with track record

Ryan Odom, VCU (previously led Utah State to Round of 64, UMBC to becoming first 16 seed to beat a 1 seed)

I was feeling optimistic after that St. John’s game.  But since then, it’s the same frustrations as last year.  We cannot win a single close game to save our lives.  And this hurts more because I really hate Indiana basketball.

I would be surprised if Howard wants to stay another year. The basketball world is different than what he signed on to, his best players are mediocre college players and one and dones, and with his health issues, I can't believe he wants or needs the stress of trying to rebuild this team after his own kids are gone.

Watching Michigan basketball the last couple years is like watching 2020 Michigan football.  Only it doesn't seem to have a 2021, 2022, 2023 season coming right after it.

This team flashes at times.  I think they will put together a strong run.  Defense does continue to be an issue though.   However, I think this can be a strong team with its current players.  Hopefully they can win enough games before its too late to matter.

Maybe we should look at Rutgers head coach.  They are currently crushing it on the recruiting trail which shows you how fucked up hoops recruiting is these days.

New Jersey is a hot bed of talent, it makes sense that Rutgers is finally starting to capitalize.  That said, I don't think Pikiell is a great fit.  His offenses are isolation heavy and rely on finding great individual talent, and I don't think that's a great fit for Michigan.  We've never been able to have much success with true one and done elite recruit types (both because they don't stick around long enough and in general Michigan doesn't have the regional or NIL ability to consistently recruit like Duke).

We need a coach who can take advantage of the strengths in midwest basketball, which is typically hotshot shooters from Indiana and strong big men. We need a creative offensive coach.  As good as Pikiell his, haven't really seen that from him.

Even though I’d usually say it’s far too early to discuss this, it feels like it’s over at this point. He might unfortunately get another season, but that’s just deepening the hole for his replacement to climb out of.

I would be very interested if they made a run for Billy Donovan if he gets fired from Chicago as expected. He didn’t do much in the NBA, but the guy is an A+ college coach.

Outside if him, I say bring in Oats - baggage be damned.
