Semi-OT: Nikhai Hill-Green Enters Transfer Portal

(Can't access X on my work computer to embed so hopefully the link works.)
Per Tom VanHaaren, NHG is in the transfer portal as a grad transfer after leaving UM for Biff Poggi and Charlotte this spring. With Barrett out of eligibility and a new LB coach, maybe he'd be willing to rejoin the rotation. I believe he'd have two years of eligibility left after the 2020 COVID redshirt and a medical redshirt in 2022.
VanHaaren says he had 73 tackles, 9 for loss including 2 sacks, and 3 PBU's in 1 season at Charlotte. In 2021, he had 50 tackles including 2 for loss in 14 games. 2020 brought him 1 tackle in 3 games. Many thought 2023 would be a breakout year for him, this was prior to Hausmann transferring in though.

He left for a reason. A return seems highly unlikely.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
But you don’t know the reason. So, maybe?
November 30th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
has this ever happened, actually? I'm sure it has, but I've never heard of a story of a kid who left a program for another program and then portalled back to that original program.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
Stetson Bennet transferred to a juco then back to Georgia.
November 30th, 2023 at 12:08 PM ^
Is that really transferring? Or getting your grades back up?
November 30th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
Especially considering the fact that he was in college for 6 years and never graduated lol
November 30th, 2023 at 1:41 PM ^
A lot of people go to college for 7 years.
November 30th, 2023 at 2:16 PM ^
Obligatory. They're called doctors.
November 30th, 2023 at 2:38 PM ^
Student tickets at UofM football for 11 years. I may or may not be proud of that.
November 30th, 2023 at 3:23 PM ^
Man, that has to Qualify you for a 50 yard-line seat!
December 1st, 2023 at 2:14 AM ^
Meh, I had student tickets for 12 years (was only actually a student for 7 of those years though)...
November 30th, 2023 at 10:21 AM ^
Well, there was that WR that signed with USC, asked for a release from his NLI so he could sign with Texas, and then transferred back to USC all before his freshman season.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
Didn't he do that because California law prevented him from getting NIL money at his age? He skirted the law to get cash and ended up where he wanted to be in the first place. A+ move.
December 1st, 2023 at 2:16 AM ^
Didn't think Texas law allowed that either. That was why Quinn Ewers went to OSU for a year before transferring to Texas (where he wanted to be all along)...
November 30th, 2023 at 11:08 AM ^
And he, Bru McCoy, wound up with The Vols.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
I can't think of a football one, but the "boomerang" transfer happens in basketball. Qudus Wahab (GTown→Maryland→GTown...then to PSU) and Tanner Holden (Wright St→OSU→Wright St) are ones that come to mind right off the top of my head.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:38 AM ^
Yes, it happens and will more often as transfers are becoming so common. Off the top of my head, there is a Michigan example and it was so typical of the NCAA. Marell Evans played for Carr and RR, left and transferred back when Hoke was in. Unfortunately, he had eligibility issues and didn't get to play even though he was admitted and was on the team.
November 30th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^
There was a pre-portal Michigan example way back in the mid-90s. Shawn Collins transferred out (I think to Syracuse) and then transferred back in.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:08 AM ^
I'm assuming JT Daniels will transfer back to Georgia, USC and West Virginia for his eighth, ninth and 10th years of eligibility.
November 30th, 2023 at 1:12 PM ^
If Bobby Petrino can return to Arkansas…
November 30th, 2023 at 1:26 PM ^
Ben Bryant (qb) transferred from Cincinnati to EMU then back to Cincinnati and then transferred to Northwestern
November 30th, 2023 at 3:07 PM ^
Indeed it has happened! Even at Michigan.
Marell Evans signed with Michigan in 2007. He then transferred to Hampton. He tried to come back to Michigan in 2011, and he was on the team, but he was not eligible to play. I'm not sure if the details ever were made public.

Whatever the reason it was not that inferior mustard base "Carolina Gold" that should only be eaten from chicken wings.
Kansas City BBQ!
> texas
> tennessee
This is Jack Stacks Crown Prime - it is one of (3) of the best things I have ever put in my mouth.
Carry on.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
now you made me think about all the things you put in your mouth
November 30th, 2023 at 10:37 AM ^
I went to Kansas City for that Elite 8 game against Oregon with my buddy (Purdue grad, they played right after against Kansas), and had burnt ends there. Holy cow, best barbecue I've ever had. Bummer of a couple games but damn, great food.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:45 AM ^
YES Burnt Ends are incredible.
Imagine a prime rib on the bone cooked like a burnt end to order and you have THE CROWN PRIME from Jack Stack in KC.
The original location (Mom/Dad owned) in Martin City (30 minutes from KC) has the oldest oven so the flavor is slightly better then the other locations that are newer and owned by the Son I believe. However any location does it right and it is a MUST try.
November 30th, 2023 at 2:39 PM ^
Don't forget to order the rack and half of their onion rings!
November 30th, 2023 at 10:45 AM ^
Mustard base is not even top 2 among Carolina barbecue styles lol

Dang. I’m a naked kind of guy but as far as sauces go I kinda like Carolina gold.
I didn’t know I was so wrong 😕
November 30th, 2023 at 11:14 AM ^
Stay strong. Let them know!
November 30th, 2023 at 11:18 AM ^
Half Carolina Gold and half Franks Red Hot is the best wing sauce you'll ever have. Trust me.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:25 AM ^
WINGS being the optimal term.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:03 AM ^
I’ve never been to Jack Stacks but somehow I got gifted one of their rubs once and it was FANTASTIC (because MSG).
I’ll fight you on the Texas bbq though. It really is different down there.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:24 AM ^
You have posted your love for Texas BBQ before and you good sir are WRONG!
However because you have not made the trip to KC and had The Crown Prime, proper Burnt Ends, or any of the many local BBQ favorites you will remain forgiven as basking in ignorance.
Texas BBQ is 2nd. If you make way to the area let me know I will host you personally on the great BBQ tour of KC.
Sidenote: The American Royal World Series of BBQ

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
November 30th, 2023 at 12:03 PM ^
I would love to take you up on that; not a lot of draw for me for that part of the country though. BBQ World Series might be worth the trip, but kind of a bad time of year to get away.
There is scarcely a day that goes by that I don’t think about a particular meat or tray or dish that I had in Texas. Beef cheeks at Leroy & Lewis, bacon burnt ends at Heim, Panther City, Goldee’s, Dayne’s, Truth, Snow’s…
I could cry just thinking about it.

If anyone has a Mission BBQ please patronize. Run by vets, it's a wellness job for those who need a purpose. A Team Rubicon member in Ft. Myers "The Tribe" who makes BBQ for volunteers, shelters.

St. Louis style ribs, at Texas Jack's, in Arlington VA. Go figure....
I have also had absolutely amazing ribs at a place called Smokeworks in Cambridge, UK; never in a million years would I have guessed. Couldn't finish the half-rack.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:26 AM ^
BBQ is like M football: Some like it more when JJ throws more, some like it more when Blake runs more, and some like it more when Rod calls game. In the end, it’s a sweet victory. Same for BBQ: Some like different sauces or none at all; in the end, just shades of victory.
This site has attacked institutions such as Skyline or Miracle Whip, and now Carolina gold. If somebody starts in on Velveeta, I’m going to try to be pissed… but it’s going to be hard this week.
November 30th, 2023 at 12:23 PM ^
Miracle Whip deserves all the scorn heaped upon it. 🤮
November 30th, 2023 at 1:23 PM ^
Please tell me you guys saw that old 60s/70s commercial of a Miracle Whip Jello mold. The clincher was the dish of Miracle Whip in the middle for dipping.
FOR DIPPING!
November 30th, 2023 at 12:40 PM ^
institutions such as Skyline or Miracle Whip, and now Carolina gold. If somebody starts in on Velveeta
Apparently you don't have to be good, or even not horrible, to be an "institution" in your mind. Skyline is the only one of those four I would ever consider consuming. And it'd have to be free and I'd have to be starving.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:36 AM ^
Likewise about the beef rib at Jack Stack. Phenomenal.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
I haven't heard of a player coming back to the school they transferred from. If he had a "grass isn't greener" realization, didn't like the Partridge hire after spring ball, or likes his chances on the depth chart better this year, maybe he'd be open to a return, but I agree it's unlikely. I also wonder what impact that would have on the team chemistry. We had someone quit my college baseball team then rejoin it the next year, and there was definitely some resentment.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:20 AM ^
QB Ben Bryant was at Cincy then transferred to EMU for a year then back to Cincinnati for Fickell's last year there. The joke was he was "on loan" to Eastern. If NHG came back, it'd be similar.
Bryant then grad transferred to Northwestern this year and was a key part of their surprising run.
November 30th, 2023 at 11:38 AM ^
I mean, isn't Charlotte* our AAA affiliate?
Edit: oops wrong team right coach.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:15 AM ^
Those who stay sometimes leave because they feel they have a better opportunity then change their mind and come back and become champions.
November 30th, 2023 at 10:16 AM ^
Assuming Colson returns, he'd be looking at a depth chart of Colson, Hausmann, and Rolder, with Jaydon Hood and Micah Pollard behind the starters. Does NHG get significant playing time outside of an injury to a starter?
November 30th, 2023 at 10:36 AM ^
That is a good question. I think Colson has a decision to make. I, for one, had high hopes for NHG during the full season that he was expected to be back any day. I would welcome him back, but presumably, he wants to transfer somewhere he would be higher on the depth chart.
