It appears that the NY Jets are inquiring with retired QB Chad Henne to see if he'd like to tote a clipboard on the sidelines in NY. Of course, with the way Zack Wilson plays, he may end up in a starter's role.
Meanwhile, others are imagining a different Michigan QB coming out of retirement:

Let's go!
Funny enough, Tom Brady helped recruit Henne to UofM.

Robert Saleh lights a cigar in his press conference.
"So how do you feel about the QB backup situation if Wilson gets in over his head?"
"Look this is a meritocracy. We got a QB battle for the second spot and it's coming down to the GOAT or Henne. Our other GOAT had to be put down"
September 14th, 2023 at 10:50 AM ^
"Hey Chad, I know you just retired a multi-millionaire in surprisingly good health for an NFL QB. How would you like to come play behind our offensive line and completely WRECK your body for a couple million more?"

I had read that during the recruitment of Henne a young Super Bowl champ Tom Brady had a phone call with Henne that helped sway Henne.
I read it like around 2004ish, so I don't recall where.

johnny manziel probably isn't busy..... and there's always Unlce Rico..... coach would have put him in the 4th quarter, they'd have been state champions. No doubt in my mind.

September 13th, 2023 at 4:29 PM ^
I think it is. Even without the music notes, it's probably Top 5.
September 13th, 2023 at 7:49 PM ^
My only complaint is that it should be "H-H-H-Henne" with four H's.
But, the musical notes mixed with the creative title make it tops for me, at least since I've been around these parts.

saw Henne banging the drum last week for the Chiefs. Michigan needs to get this guy back for a game provided he doesn't come out of retirement

Backup QB is a great job.
I will ALWAYS remind people of the Michigan Shootout on Monday Night Football back in 2011: Brady vs Henne when Henne was the Dolphins QB (Chad Pennington was injured for the 8 billionth time).
Brady and Henne SHREDDED each other’s defenses. 500+ passing yards for Brady, 400+ passing yards and 40+ RUSHING yards for Henne.
2011 was “mid career” for Henne at the time, and the “when will Brady retire” conversations were already in full swing.
Since that day, 6 (or is it 7??) Super Bowl rings between them.
September 13th, 2023 at 12:35 PM ^
ESPN article today on backup QBs does bring up an interesting point that when one has been a starting QB since teenage years, it can be tough to evolve that mindset to be a clipboard carrier, no matter the financial rewards. AJ McCarron is mentioned as quitting his NFL backup gig to play in the XFL with a significant paycut ($4M to $60k) just because he wanted to actually play.
September 13th, 2023 at 5:00 PM ^
Chase Daniel made over $41m as a career backup. Incredible.
$41m to attempt 273 passes over a 13 year career
September 13th, 2023 at 12:20 PM ^
Colin Kaepernick was interested in the job but apparently the Jets are not interested in Colin Kaepernick.
September 13th, 2023 at 3:22 PM ^
no one is … dude hasnt thrown a pass in competition (including practice) in what, 7 years?
September 13th, 2023 at 3:59 PM ^
Kaep was a heck of a quarterback for a 2-3 year period. He was somewhat ahead of his time with a good combination of arm strength and speed. Unfortunately, the guy has not played a single down of competitive football in 7 years. And, his last year in the league he was just not very good. Even if he could miraculously regain his physical skills from 7 years ago in 2-3 weeks, which is impossible, physical ability is only one part of what is needed to play QB in the NFL. He hasn't had to stand in the pocket and read a defense at full speed (even in a practice setting) in 7 years, and the game has changed during that time.
And setting all of that aside, there is the political / media angle. This is a no politics zone, so there is no need to discuss whether anyone agrees or disagrees with Kaep's stance on any issues, but from a purely business angle, it is likely that for any team that were to sign Kaep, approximately half of the fanbase would rejoice because they agree with his stances, but there would also be another approximately half that would be very upset. Again, doesn't matter which side is right or wrong, no owner wants to alienate around half of its fanbase by signing a controversial player, especially when that player is highly unlikely to be a difference maker. That's just a practical reality.
September 13th, 2023 at 7:20 PM ^
That event seems positively quaint now given how the past 7 years have gone.
September 13th, 2023 at 5:41 PM ^
Harbaugh whispered and Colin played very well. That match up/scenario will never occur again.
September 13th, 2023 at 12:20 PM ^
Smart for the Jets to reach out to him, but from Henne's perspective if he didn't want to back up Mahomes anymore why would he want to back up Zack Wilson?
September 13th, 2023 at 12:37 PM ^
Considering what just happened to another 40-year old QB behind that OL, I'd be wary of getting thrust into a game after an inevitable Zach Wilson benching.
September 13th, 2023 at 12:52 PM ^
With that OL, I think a Zach Wilson breaking is inevitable.
September 13th, 2023 at 12:29 PM ^
Jets to Michigan: "All your retired QB are belong to us! "
September 13th, 2023 at 12:33 PM ^
It's a sample-size of 2, but I asked 2 Jets fans "would you take Tom Brady if it meant a run to the AFC Championship Game?" They both said no. I think that's pretty crazy, but the dislike is pretty strong.
But there's an arguably better scenario. Brady comes to the Jets but is terrible (e.g., plays like a 46-year-old) and the Jets wind up going 5-12. Break out the popcorn for all the Jets fans thinking it was a conspiracy, some devious, evil plot by Brady acting as a double secret-agent to hurt them.
