Michigan adds extra practice time to ensure we are prepared to beat........Georgia?
Not sure how I feel about this. On one hand I'm glad they are willing to put a stake in the ground and call the National Championship their ultimate goal. On the other hand anything that potentially takes away practice time (and the dedication to) beating OSU I'm against.
That should piss off Alabama.

Needed a Beat TCU drill last year!
Too soon?
Need a Beat TCU (et al) period all the time. That was a severe case of looking ahead, imho.
Agreed. Overconfidence, and hubris, we're all vulnerable, especially after a glorious win against a rival and a dominant performance in the B1G Championship Game.
Another great example is the wreckage of the Titan lying on the ocean floor right next to the Titanic. The captain of the Titanic was warned against steaming full ahead into an ice field just like Ocean Gate was warned against their engineering malfeasance. As Georg Hegel said, "The only thing that we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history." Even their names, Titan and Titanic don't escape the irony.
Fortunately, we're only talking about a game, not turning the bodies of 5 souls into fish food.
I would not put Titan and Titanic captains on the same footing. In the 2000's we know much to say that CFRs are not a good idea for multiple trips to pressure differentials in excess of 5400 psi.
We know enough to safely venture into deeper water depths with an unblemished record, so far. I do not know why the CEO of OceanGate did what he did. All I can say is that he could have done a lot better.
Yes losing a football game is the same as people losing their lives. 🙄
Actually, Captain Smith was not warned against either the speed or the course. At the time, large Ocean liners were considered fairly insulated from sinking as a result of a collision with an iceberg, as several head on collisions before had not resulted in flounder. Additionally, most ships did not slow in the vicinity of ice and relied on lookouts like the crew of the Titanic did to steer around them.
Smith’s response to the ice field was consistent with standard practice at the time. Not saying it was “smart” by any means but it wasn’t the result of individual hubris on his part.
New qb’s could change several equations in these goals.
I'm fine with it if it isn't an extensive portion of practice. OSU and PSU are more important right now because you are guaranteed to play them.
The article doesnt really say how much time is being allocated to beating Georgia but man it sure feels like the cart is WAY out in front of the horse on that one. You have to know that every other B1G team (including OSU btw) is going to use that as proof that Michigan "doesnt respect us".
It's seems taking a series of financial planning & investment classes to prepare yourself for winning the PowerBall.
Financial planning for winning the PowerBall? I spend that shit instantly and without recourse, thank you very much. I own so many properties.
I don't really think that stuff matters in a matchup like Michigan v. Ohio State. The Game itself is the bulletin board material.
Based on the practices I've attended, periods are typically around 12 minutes (teams include Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, UConn, and Ohio State - all 12 minutes).
It’s 2023, so no one puts a cart in front of or behind a horse anymore. Except the Amish. But they don’t have the Internet so they can’t possible be your intended audience. Unless they’re on Rumspringa. :-)
What do you call an Amish man with his arm stuck up a horse's ass?
A mechanic.
If you start investing as a child, it’s similar to winning the powerball. Compound interest is your friend. Einstein called it the 8th wonder of the world. Buffett started @ 11 among other things. Only wish I had listened as a kid.
Meh. They already have a "Beat Ohio" part of practice.
And they are dedicated to those:
Last year, the Wolverines focused not just on Ohio State, but on all of the ‘state’ schools — which included Penn State and fellow rival Michigan State — the only regular season loss in 2021.
if we beat ohio but lost to UGA 10 seasons in a row i'd still be quite happy about football.
besides, you can't beat dogs, that's a crime. but nothing prohibits us from crushing nuts. lots of them.
I'd rather see us beat UGA and their ugly mutt. My whole family is full of Georgia Tech grads though, so....
I would really doubt there is significant team specific game planning involved. I'd guess its purely a motivational tool to reinforce that winning a national championship is as important as their other goals of winning the big ten and beating OSU. Having a dedicated time period where your coaches are saying "you were talented enough to get here but you need to take the extra step" should be good reinforcement for the players.
Agreed. I think the title of the thread and the OP is a little bit of a misread of what's actually occurring.
It gets the players in the right mindset to take on the team's strongest competition. Gives them the confidence to think they can win the games...since they've prepared especially for those teams.
I'm sure whatever they are doing in those drills will translate to the games against other opponents.
Wait. Time out.
"The title of the thread is a bit misleading? The title of the thread "Michigan adds extra practice to ensure we beat......Georgia" is basically five ellipses more than the article I referenced "Michigan football adding a 'Beat Georgia' period in practice"
Seriously, how is that in any way misleading?
You're out of timeouts. You wasted one challenging the spot on that fourth down play. Don't you know they never overturn the spot on replay?
To be fair, they aren't adding extra practice time, they are reallocating the time.
Louder for the NCAA in the back
I doubt that they're even reallocating as much as renaming.
I didn't say the title is misleading.
I said the title and the OP were a bit of a misread of the situation. Which they are.
They aren't adding practice time. And, having a "beat Georgia" drill or segment won't distract from preparing for games against other teams. Anything that helps the team beat Georgia or OSU will certainly help them beat inferior opponents.
Time to get those old eyes checked, mGrowOld!
this is the correct response. remind this team, this year, that the goal is to win a national championship. remind them that they're going to be going at the king, and they best not miss.
They have a 9 on 7 drill that is tight formation and all runs up the middle. It’s about toughness. They called the drill, “beat Ohio” last year.
I think they are just renaming it or doing something similar this year for Georgia. It’s good to think big. This is mindset not tactics.
Would prefer a"beat the best" so nobody can claim disrespect. That way it can be Georgia, bama, whoever... Without calling anyone out. We only lost to Georgia once. We also lost to tc fucking u. Ugh. There was no sourness in the Georgia loss but that loss to tcu was brutal
But Georgia is the best team. Two time national champions. Only team being called out is Michigan.
You may not have sourness about Georgia but the team certainly does. They beat themselves in that TCU game but Georgia beat them up and there was no respect there.
To be fair - they weren't only playing TCU - there were also SEC officials they needed to deal with.
For posterity: two pick sixes, one fumble into the end zone on first and goal, and a failed fourth and goal. Those are just the offense's largest fuckups.
My dog is really smart, but she still falls for the 'fake' tennis ball throw.
beating dogs shouldn't be that big of a challenge....
Georgia just won back to back National Championships. Pretty sure if we prepare for Georgia(in whatever respect we are), it will also help with anyone else that we could play in the National Championship if we get there.
Michigan adds extra practice time...
Don't tell anybody at theFreep, please.
Remember when Drew Sharp ripped Hoke for saying the primary goal was to win the Big Ten and Hoke would not say National Championship? I think beating Ohio State and winning the Big Ten is implied in the beat "Georgia" drill.
Why are people so up in arms about this? We've made it to the CFP in back to back years and UGA has won the national championship back to back years. Making time to "beat Georgia" is about getting over the hump and winning the championship
This feels like a normal next step.
Obviously, beating OSU and winning the B1G is still paramount but if the team wants to win the whole thing, UGA is the ultimate target. Beat the best to be the best.
Motivation tools need to evolve as the program does too.
Eh. I don't have a problem with this, and I don't think it'll be the difference in winning the MNC either.
As long as the "Beat Georgia" period is in addition to, rather than in place of, the "Beat Ohio" period. Beating OSU needs to be our initial -- and many would argue our primary -- goal-in-focus each season.
I'm not sure where I sit on that. Yes, Michigan should set the highest goals, but we absolutely cannot lose sight of beating OSU and winning the conference this year, thereby continuing to build our momentum overall.
I see success in the CFP coming from a philosophical shift, especially early in games, as much as anything else anyway, and that's on the coaches.
Do you really think Jimmy dropped the focus on beating OSU?
I like. You want to be the best, you have to beat the best
Can't wait for the hand wringers to come to MGO to whine about Michigan dedicating 9 minutes every 6th practice to get pumped for UGA, the next time we lose to OSU.... in 2037.
I'm good with this. "Georgia" can be treated as a stand-in for all of the big-time non-B1G teams that are the next hurdle Michigan needs to clear. I won't be concerned about this program not taking OSU seriously enough until I see evidence that's the case. They've gotten up for that game in the biggest way the last couple of years
No way this can backfire or be the source of future nyucks.
...anything that potentially takes away practice time (and the dedication to) beating OSU I'm against.
Did you read the tweet OP?
Michigan is adding a 'Beat Georgia' period to practice to go along with the successful 'Beat Ohio' period that was added in 2021.
It says "is adding" and "to go along with", which means that it's not taking anything away. This is clearly an addition to the other "beat so and so" periods they already have.
