The Legacy of J Dilla airs tomorrow @ 10 pm on FX and Hulu
Tomorrow @ 10pm Hulu is airing a documentary on the life and legacy of legendary Detroit producer J Dilla.
J Dilla was a producer/rapper who gained notoriety as a member of the Detroit rap group Slum Village and then went on produce tracks throughout the 90s/2000s for Erykah Badu, Common, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and many others. J Dilla is not only credited with creating the “Detroit sound” during this time, but was a key artist in the creation of Lo-Fi Hip Hop.
It’s just a heads up for any one interested. I know Hip Hop might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I thought since Dilla was from Detroit this would be an appropriate post. Plus, I was surprised Hulu picked this up as J Dilla’s body of work was mostly underground Hip Hop and obscure samples.
Just a suggestion - include OT in the title given the non-sports subject.
Good point, I clicked on it thinking it was michigan football related. Imagine my disappointment.
JD is my favorite, thanks for the heads up. Also, I wouldn’t say he’s obscure. He might not be super mainstream, but he produced a lot for commons first mainstream album as well as busta and qtip.
Yeah, my bad. I ment that his choice of samples were at times obscure. It typically wasn’t what you’d see producers sampling during the time. That’s what was great about his work.
Pete Rock, Dj Premier and Madlib are some of my favorites…but Dilla was on another level.
I have never heard of him. Neil Diamond, on the other hand...
Neil Diamond makes my ears bleed. Neil Sedaka on the other hand...
Dilla was an extraordinary talent who died too young. The funny thing is not as many Detroiter's knew of him or his body of work. I still check out Slum Village wherever they're performing from time to time (last time in Ann Arbor). I will be watching for sure and thanks for helping breath life back into one of our own.
Neat. Thanks. That is arguably the--and absolutely a--golden era of hiphop; had no idea a Detroit auteur was so central. Would love to check that out.
I’m fond of the Detroit Sound created by B Gorda
Will definitely check this out! Love the old school!

Went to a celebration of his life at the Filmore years back. So many Detroit artist’s along with A Tribe Called Quest, Jay Electronica, and others.
Greatest producer in Hip Hop history
Boldy James is going to release a project using the "last" of J Dilla's beats. If you don't know him, Boldy is probably in the top 3 of Detroit rappers right now with Em and Royce Da 5'9.
Egregious omission of Danny Brown, who'd I'd take over any of those 3 all day.
Let's see what he's like post-rehab lol
Huh. Pete Rock already made him a posthumous album.
The J Dilla biography by Dan Charnas is an incredible book, even for folks like me who have always liked hip hop but are not obsessives. Anyone interested in music, Michigan, and great storytelling... well worth checking out.
RIH, J Dilla.
Thanks for sharing. J Dilla's album Donuts is historically good.
I appreciate the heads up!
Thank you so much for sharing this. Dilla was a genius who made the interface of hip hop and soul his playground. Q-Tip called him the greatest producer of all time, and he was right.
Thanks for this. I am setting my DVR now!
p.s. it's from the series "The New York Times Presents". color me impressed.
Thanks for this. I am setting my DVR now!
It better be good! The stakes is high
Interesting coincidence. I just started listening to "Dilla Time" based on the recommendation on this board.
Thank you for letting me know.
if you listen to hip hop and don't know who Dilla is then you're not listening to hip hop.
Dilla was your producer's favorite producer. I wished Em would've put some stuff out over J Dilla beats..
No doubt. I’d love to hear Eminem over dilla or Dj premier or prime Rza. Never really cared for em’s beats but there is no denying his skills on the mic
If anyone is looking for some more on Dilla, the Netflix series "Hip-Hop Evolution" has an episode that focuses on Detroit. The entires series is very good and recommended.

from npr "When Jeff Bubeck buys an old record collection, he has no idea it once belonged to J. Dilla, one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time. But something else is uncovered...."
Love j dilla. His work is one of the reasons I love hip hop. To me he is just under the upper echelon producers like dj premier. But he’d be in my top ten easy
Thank you for posting this heads up. Just watched the documentary and thought it was great.
