UP Color Tour Friday POSBANG
I'm doing my first-ever UP color tour and there's plenty of it to POSBANG right now. Heading today to Pictured Rocks, then tomorrow to The Porkies and Copper Harbor. The weather forecast looks favorable to extending my trip into early next week, which means I won't be subjected to another miserable Lions game this weekend; I'd rather spend my time camping and seeing the sights Up North.
Have yet to see Dennis at any of the campgrounds up here though...
Say "Ya!" to da UP, eh!

Enjoy! I am hoping to follow in your footsteps one day. It is a beautiful day in Indy - bonfire tonight with wife and a few friends... BANG!

Pictured Rocks is absolutely fantastic! If you ever have the opportunity to take the kayak tour along the water edge at the base of the cliffs, DO IT! You won't regret it.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:42 AM ^
That sounds like bangable advice. If the weather is good enough I just might do that; if not, next summer when I go to Isle Royale.
September 25th, 2020 at 10:26 AM ^
It was really cool. The wife and I did it, along with another couple. I didn't realize it until we got up to the cliffs but there's a bunch of caves along the water line that are large enough for multiple kayaks to fit in! The largest cave the tour guide took us into was HUGE. I'm talking two stories huge. They called it "rainbow cave" if I remember correctly. We did the regular day tour where you left in the morning and went till lunch (bring your own), stopped at a beach and ate / explored, then turned around and headed back.
And these kayaks are legit kayaks. Not your simple Dunham's $100 kayak lol. They had a foot pedal controlled rudder and everything.
September 25th, 2020 at 10:15 AM ^
I signed up to do that 3 years ago, but we got canceled due to a marine advisory and I've wanted to do that ever since.
September 25th, 2020 at 1:56 PM ^
Also if you have time, rent a pontoon boat for the day and load up for a picnic on the beach on the far side of Grand Isle.
Easily one of the most sublime locations I've ever completely wasted an afternoon stuffing my face and drinking various forms of adult beverage.
If you are cold water inclined, also a great place to swim, as is all of Pictured Rocks. Here there is a point and a stone arch you can swim under that is pretty cool.

What is happening in this gif? So many questions.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:44 AM ^
I believe it's sweet corn. I found a similar pic and it was labeled Corn Porn.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:11 AM ^
What is happening in this gif? And it double posted. Yeah! Looks like she is taking her outer thumb and barely touching what looks like a large discolored banana? Help me out.
September 25th, 2020 at 10:47 AM ^
I believe she is having foreplay with said corn.
September 25th, 2020 at 11:17 AM ^
I think it's foreplay before getting down to a fun session of cornhole.

My old man grew up in Iron Mountain so I spent many a summer as a kid up in da UP. Cousins in Iron River who had homes on a few lakes - simply beautiful up there in "God's Country". Enjoy!
September 25th, 2020 at 9:21 AM ^
My mom grew up in Iron River and I agree with your assessment.
rob f: Have a great trip! In case they're not already on your map ...
* I had a good meal at Fitzgerald's in Eagle Harbor this summer. Take-out only, picnic tables on the lake. (Might be a bit cold for that .....)
* On the west edge of the mountains, the Presque Isle River and its falls are spectacular.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:40 AM ^
Presque Isle Falls is on my to do list for tomorrow, I've been there once during the summer years ago when camping and hiking the Porkies. Beautiful area!

Blue - the likelihood of our extended families knowing each other is probably quite high.
My sophomore year @ U of M I met a girl at some random house party (I was partying like it was 1999 because.... it was 1999) we ended up talking for a bit and come to find out she grew up in Iron River. I get her name and mention it to my Dad since he grew up "one town over". I tell him and he does a double take. Come to find out he was freshman roommates with HER DAD at U of M (East Quad 1960 something).
Talk about a small world. He was pretty sure they put them together because they were both from towns in the UP? That was of course never corroborated but seemed like a plausible explanation.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:49 AM ^
"One town over" from Iron River has to be Crystal Falls. Or maybe I'm discounting the Iron River suburbs of Stambaugh, Caspian, and Gaastra!
Cool story, nonetheless.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:55 AM ^
You're not wrong!
Not sure how old you are, but the thing I remember the most about Crystal Falls was that in the 90's Diane Sawyer did some report from Crystal Falls since there was so much meth going through there at the time.
September 25th, 2020 at 10:22 AM ^
there are lots of deer and grouse by crystal falls, too. great place to hunt.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:52 AM ^
I grew up in iron mountain myself so there is no doubt we have family that knows each other
September 25th, 2020 at 9:59 AM ^
I grew up in Gladstone

original family homestead is in bark river/harris - which is where I still have a "get-away" place.
September 25th, 2020 at 10:09 AM ^
Nice! I'm fairly confident when my grandma was alive (she lived on East F Street right off of US2 for about 60 years) that there was only about 1-2 degrees of separation from just about every person who lived in Iron Mountain, Norway & Iron River.
September 26th, 2020 at 10:02 PM ^
Yeah. I have 6 brothers and we all went to IMHS.
September 26th, 2020 at 10:55 PM ^
So did I.

Friends have a place on Drummond island. Not as pretty as turning left after the bridge but very nice. Cell phones don’t work and there’s not even a sheriff on the island. I may have to usher the wife up to mackinaw one last time before the snow flies.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:09 AM ^
Enjoy. Bang me. Go blue!
September 25th, 2020 at 9:09 AM ^
Awesome! We are sadly winterizing our RV for the season in the Silver Lake area but looking forward to some fall color touring action soon!
September 25th, 2020 at 10:10 AM ^
Was swimming in Silver Lake just last weekend and probably was within 15 mins of robF on the way home(Casnovia- sorry Mr. F but had no time to stop in).
September 25th, 2020 at 9:11 AM ^
I have ways wanted to make this trip with the wife. Have a great time.

Say Yes to Michigan.
Say Ya to da U.P., eh!

Just got back from Marquette/Copper Harbor trip. Amazing colors and above average weather made it really nice. Hit up all the mountain bike trails and quality hikes with the dogs. Also spent some time in the Porcupine Mountains for a day. But couldn't see shit at the lake of the clouds lookout, way too foggy
September 25th, 2020 at 12:51 PM ^

September 25th, 2020 at 9:37 AM ^
What area? I was in the Soo/Brimley area after a little sightseeing around St. Ignace, woke up to light rain this morning. Filling up the gas tank and about to head west.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:55 AM ^

there are also some great colors to be seen in the northern lower for you 'leaf peepers'.
September 25th, 2020 at 12:33 PM ^
Heading up to the family home in Cross Village (sturgeon bay) this afternoon. Looks like the weathers going to hold up for some great hiking and tree peeping

We're having a company golf weekend up at Shanty Creek. We're playing (3) 18-Hole Rounds @ Schuss Mountain, Legend, and Cedar River. Should be fun and everything is paid for. There is one small downside to this weekend though. Have a great Friday and weekend everyone!
September 25th, 2020 at 9:37 AM ^
I live in Pensacola, Florida.
Looking forward to the 50s at night next week!
Hurricane Sally jacked the area up into a mess.
After I retire, I will take my wife on a trip to the UP.
Go Blue!!!
September 25th, 2020 at 9:38 AM ^
Born and raised in the UP. I cannot explain my visceral feeling of joy during the fall color season. I love it. I crave it. I truly miss experiencing it every year and always have this strange urge to move back "home" when the leaves start changing.
Enjoy your trip, Rob. From all the early reports I've seen, the colors are incredible up there this year. All my posbangs to you. And safe travels.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:48 AM ^
I'd say you're about a week early.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:55 AM ^
Interior Central and Western UP highlands are supposedly nearing peak very soon.
September 25th, 2020 at 10:19 AM ^
I just back from a week on Indian lake outside Manistique, the colors are just starting to pop. Next week should be great in that area.
September 25th, 2020 at 10:53 AM ^
County Road 510 between Marquette and Negaunee is stunning right now. There are areas in full peak right now.
I'd suggest running 510 at least to the overlook, could go up to Big Bay and stop at Yellow Dog falls.
Peshekee Grade is getting nice colors too about by Michigamme.
September 26th, 2020 at 6:00 AM ^
My camp is 17 miles up the grade from the Lutheran church at the beginning. Not far past 4 beers corner.
My folks are on their way up there right now for a few days.
September 25th, 2020 at 9:50 AM ^
Have a great trip. We purchased a travel trailer this year after a few years of looking. Already planning our trip for next fall, don't even know where to start.
