Chase Winovich: Over/under 9.5 sacks in 2019?
I was listening to the Adam Schefter Podcast this morning, and Schefter was interview Louis Riddick. Riddick was in love with the Winovich pick (Patriots, 3rd round, #77 overall) and said he would have double-digit sacks as a rookie. Do you guys think that's realistic for him in 2019?
In 39 games playing defensive end at Michigan, Winovich made 19 sacks, or roughly 0.5 sacks per game. If he keeps up that pace in the NFL, that would put him at about 8 sacks in a 16-game season. Trey Flowers led the Patriots in 2018 with 7.5 sacks.
Under
Under. Belichick wants him to cut his hair, and for all we know, that's what gives him his strength.
Softball lollipop question..........Chase will go UNDER (Clowney hasn't beat that total any of his first four years).
THE REALLY BIG QUESTION COMES WITH SUPERNATURAL SPACEX RAMIFICATIONS;
Will XM (extramelanin 51,932 MGOBLOG POINTS) go OVER or UNDER 35.1 points average per day as of 12/31/2019 at 11:59 PM?
Will LOST WAGES (99 points in almost 6 years) average OVER or UNDER 1.375 points per month AS OF 12/31/2019 AT 11:59 pm?
LOST WAGES (user name checks out) asked XM if he had a job or was spending LOST WAGES' tax contributions of LOST WAGES on a different thread.
I got XM going OVER 35 PER DAY (M football is coming....)
I got LOST WAGES going UNDER 1.375 PER MONTH (based on non-traditional adjective usage combined with interplanetary travel).
What does MGOBLOG CLUB forecast?
Under. I'm just happy that Chase got to go a great organization.
Way under.
Surely under and if he does hit that mark or get close to it, I'm assuming some might be due to garbage time at the end of year vs lesser competition. Ziggy Ansah had somewhat inflated numbers against teams starting 2nd/3rd string OL and QBs that made it seem like he was a world beater towards the end of the season.
Take the under
Under. Eventually, but not his first season.
I think his limit as a starter would be 9, if a bench or role player more like 5, so under
I looked up sack leaders for 2018 and was surprised to see there were 22 players with 10 or more sacks last year in the NFL, which was more than I thought there would be. With that said, I don't see Chase getting there as a rookie. I would take the under.
He will have 38 sacks before the playoffs... unless he forgets to eat his Wheaties.
Under
4-5 sacks would be a solid showing for a guy in his rookie year who isn't liklely to play starter minutes from the jump and is acclimating to the league. Would be thrilled if he got more than that but with the speed at which the ball comes out in the NFL it would be a coup if Chase got anywhere close to 9.5 sacks.
He had 5 last year and 8 (5.5 of which came against Rutgers, Air Force, and Purdue) the year before in 13 game seasons.
If he had half of that, it would probably still be considered a successful rookie campaign in NE
Last person who should be commenting on the success of a campaign.
His boys played some JP level defense as Arya drove right down broadway for the kill. Too soon...?
under
Under all day long. I think he could definitely reach double digits as a pro but I don't see it happening in his rookie season.
Great story and inspiration for other young people. Came in under Hoke as a TE and wound up working his ass off to being drafted as a DE in the NFL.
He was an OLB originally and then switched to TE, then switched back to DE. All in his first 2 years.
Lol under
Under. Starts on special teams but is 2nd team at OLB/DE. Gets 2.5 sacks in a solid rookie year - they are grooming him for long term. I think Belichick let's him keep the hair. Worked great for the Packers with Clay Matthews was a fan favorite.
By the way - did you all see that Rashan Gary is wearing Matthews' #52 and they see him as his replacement OLB/DE in their 3-4 ? Crazy turn of events for Rashan.

Under. Trey Flowers averaged 7 sacks/season with the Pats over the past 3 years. That seems like a more realistic number, but probably optimistic in his rookie year. The Pats also really emphasize containing the pocket over sacks, so it's not a great scheme for putting up gaudy numbers. With that said, however, I see the Pats as an ideal landing spot for Chase and he will fit perfectly in their scheme and locker room.
Over/Under 3.5 would be a better prediction. However, number of times he blows contain on the edge and gives up a huge run to his side Over/Under 9.5 would be good.
Over the past 4 seasons, only 2 rookies have hit the over on 9.5 sacks. "Schefty" should probably stay away from Vegas.
To be clear, it was Riddick who thought Winovich would have at least 10 sacks, not Schefter.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Um ... yeah, the under.
If it were 4, I'd take the under.
Under. He'll be a great player for sure. But this is the NFL. Getting double digit sacks isn't easy
That’s a TON of sacks for a 3rd round rookie, under.
That's a TON of sacks for a rookie, under.
Fixed it for you.
Way under. I am pulling for him to get a lot of playing time, but this ain't the minor leagues anymore. Hopeful he will get there after a couple of years under his belt.
Definitely going to say over. I'd get such great odds on it because of how unlikely it is. Will it happen? Probably not, but if he got really fortunate I'd make some solid cash.
Not sure if serious. Double-digit sacks as a rookie is not common. Exactly zero players did it last year. The same in 2017.
Under. A more interesting number might be 7.5, but I'd still take the under.
Under. Better line would be 5.
OVER...
(Just because everyone else picked "under")
Ill say Chase gets 10 sacks this year. Seven in the regular season, two in the playoffs and one in the Super Bowl
Under
9.5 is very ambitious for a 3rd round pick. A more realistic line would be 3.5.
Under. But I hope I’m wrong. Winovich is a class act.
Under. NFL offensive tackles aren’t chumps
Jesus. Quite the take by Riddick. Under by a long shot
Under.... way under.
