OT: What music are you listening to?
It's a slow day, so I'm going to bring back an oldie but a goodie:
What music are you listening to lately? I'm a music nut and I'm always curious about where I can expand my horizons. These are the artists/albums I've been listening to lately
Pedro the Lion's new album "Phoenix"
Geoff Farina's "The Wishes of the Dead"
Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats self-titled album
Kids See Ghosts self-titled release
Weezer's "Teal Album"

Hey Magnus, since you like Rateliff check out The Revivalists. They have a Michigan connection too. One of the band manager's is a UM grad.

I know one of their managers is a big Michigan fan - are you sure he's a grad though?
February 20th, 2019 at 2:22 PM ^
Also - the video for their newest song went live this week!

They are great live too. Saw them last Memorial Day weekend.

ah I dig it man nice recommendation thank you never heard of them!
February 26th, 2019 at 8:43 AM ^
Great band. We have been listening to them for a couple of years now. Caught them in Baton Rouge a few times before they were well known. My son actually met a few of the band members as well and said they were nice guys. We are looking forward to seeing them in concert again in less than 2 months!
February 20th, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
No joke: today I listened to “Go Blue”; “Varsity”; “The Victors”; “The Yellow and Blue”.
February 20th, 2019 at 1:44 PM ^
Haha. So did I, actually. I was looking through a book with the lyrics to some Michigan songs and put them on the stereo.
February 20th, 2019 at 4:59 PM ^
Stereo?
I played mine on a victrola.
February 20th, 2019 at 5:55 PM ^
I played the songs on a didgeridoo.
February 20th, 2019 at 1:14 PM ^
Mostly Latin music.
For rap, I've been feeling a lot of the autotune crooners lately: YNW Melly, A Boogie, some Rodeo Travis Scott. Then mixed with a lot of Tee Grizzley and Meek when I'm working out/in a worse mood lol.
February 20th, 2019 at 2:04 PM ^
Somehow I have a hard time seeing Frank listening to Rap. LOL
But I am a hypocrite, as I am 44 and still listen to Hardcore Metal and still mosh and headbang.
Current Favorite Band:
Sworn In

Not for the faint of heart. My wife calls it my "angry music". But she is only 32. What does she know? (hides)

Do you not remember the time I wore skinny jeans and snorted ridderall? I'm hip!

Mostly the radio on my way to and from work.

for extra credit and the admiration of mgobloggers all over the globe, i would encourage those who respond to add a link to the music they say they are listening to. much more likely for others to 'lend an ear', so to speak, and maybe get interested in it.
just a thought. carry on.
February 20th, 2019 at 2:07 PM ^
I shared a link AND was able to get embedded video to work.
Do i get EXTRA extra credit?!?!?!

This was a recent listen.

I’m a big fan of multi-channel music. The 5.1 DVD-audio version of this song is awesome. The thunder clap at the beginning will rattle the room if you have a good subwoofer. In general, all of the 5.1 mixes of Yes’ music are very good.
I’be been listening to the 5.1 mix of Jethro Tull’s Passion Play and Jimi Hendrix’ Electric Ladyland.
February 20th, 2019 at 7:57 PM ^
Yeah - I think they did a good job on the original recordings so that helped but the 5.1 remixes of their Eddy Offord stuff is really solid and they also included a lot of “work-in-progress” versions of songs that were really interesting (to me).

Recently discovered this jazzy, funky three piece guitar/bass/drum band called Khruangbin and haven't been able to stop listening to them:
February 20th, 2019 at 1:30 PM ^
Seen them live a handful of times at El Club in Detroit and other various festivals, and each time they just get better!
Can just put their albums on repeat and listen for hours.
February 20th, 2019 at 1:43 PM ^
Hey let's film this in this tiny library, it'll come across really cool! Oh shit Aaron, we'll find a way to cram you a piano and your drum kit into the back corner, don't worry!
(I know, it's a studio...but watching on the small window is sort of funny with them all crammed in there)

NPR is a gold mine.

Great choice. I’m a huge Widespread Panic fan but I love anything Trucks does as well.

This clip is great too!

I don't listen to music anymore.
Frankly I hadn't noticed until I thought about my potential answer to this question.

Sturgill Simpson
St. Paul and The Broken Bones
February 20th, 2019 at 1:34 PM ^
If you like St. Paul, check out Alabama Shakes...
I unexpectedly got to see Sturgill at Bonnaroo last year (we won VIP tickets from the 89x radio station, so we got to camp very near to the main stage he was performing on and watched from there)...one of the highlights of my weekend!
February 20th, 2019 at 3:30 PM ^
I’ve listened to Alabama Shakes but I do not know their catalogue well. Can you recommend two or three songs that are must listens?
February 20th, 2019 at 1:38 PM ^
Love Sturgill Simpson pre- his most recent album, especially Sunday Valley Sturgill Simpson.
February 20th, 2019 at 3:42 PM ^
His new album is much different but it’s grown on me. The idea of a psychedelic country album forced me to listen to it a few times and I think it will age well. Maybe I’m just excited about the idea of a country artist making something different and giving the finger to the pop country that I can’t fucking stomach but after letting it settle I think it will be remembered as his greatest album simply because he took some big chances and ultimately established himself as an artist that is going to defy convention.
I will say that the two songs that are in my regular rotation are from his earlier work. “Call to Arms” and “You Can Have the Crown” are jams but “Turtles All the Way Down” isn’t far behind.
February 20th, 2019 at 4:34 PM ^
I didn't hate, I just didn't love all the stylistic choices he made. I also hate the modern pop country, and have always liked his country/rock style. Call to Arms was definitely my favorite on that album.
Ultimately I think MSCM will be remembered as his best, and I'd have Sailor's Guide to Earth last. There are so many bangers on MSCM: Turtles All The Way Down, Long White Line, Life of Sin, It Ain't All Flowers, Just Let Go. Whole album is fantastic.

Few new 2019ers: (as a good request from XM, here's a few links to some songs from said albums). Also, I got into 80s stuff years back and am always listening to and even discovering stuff from back then. The past week or so I've been dabbling again into some Echo and the Bunnymen (Seven Seas is great), The Jesus and Mary Chain, Public Image, and Orange Juice (Rip it Up). Also also, Big Country - Big Country has been in my head for about 2 weeks now and I've not a fucking clue as to why.
Deerhunter - Why Hasn't Everything Already Happened
Sharon Van Etten - Remind me Tomorrow
Swervedriver - Future Ruins
Wow, I actually got these to embed, though if you watched a timelapse of my post you'd see many edits and screw ups over the course of 7 minutes!

Visions of Atlantis, Beast in Black, Avantasia, Night Ranger (?), Casting Crowns
February 20th, 2019 at 1:23 PM ^
My 3yo has insisted on listing to "Get Back" every night before he goes to sleep. I've come to the determination that Ringo's snare triplets should have been reserved for the third verse, whereas the first two verses should have had a regular back beat.

Kraftwerk "Minimum & Maximum (live)
Pink Floyd "Wish you were here"
Montrose "Montrose 1"
Supertramp "Crime of the century"
I've never heard of your stuff either FWIW......
February 20th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
Love me some proggy Supertramp, like "Crime of the century". Hot take: definitely enjoy "wish you were here" more than "dark side of the moon".
February 20th, 2019 at 1:36 PM ^
Had the pleasure of seeing Kraftwerk at Movement Fest in Detroit last May...great times :)
