2022 Projected Starters YMRMFSPA

Submitted by VintageRandy on July 14th, 2022 at 9:05 PM

Howdy folks - I was trying to rack my brain for the YMRMFSPA for Taylor Upshaw in order to give myself a mental framework for our new defensive starters, and thought this rabbit hole may be of interest to the board. I went through and found all of the YMRMFSPA comps for our projected starters for the year, plus some rotational players. Hopefully this is a helpful mental exercise as we look to fall camp.

OFFENSE:

QB: Cade McNamara :: Shea Patterson

QB: JJ McCarthy :: Jim Harbaugh

RB: Blake Corum :: Mike Hart but fast

RB: Donovan Edwards :: Reggie Bush

WR: Cornelius Johnson :: Amara Darboh

TE: Erick All :: Devin Funchess

TE: Luke Schoonmaker :: Zach Gentry

LT: Ryan Hayes :: Jake Fisher

LG: Trevor Keegan :: Ben Braden

C: Olu Oluwatimi :: Cesar Ruiz

RG: Zak Zinter :: Kyle Kalis

LB: Nikhai Hill-Green :: Mike McCray

CB: Gemon Green :: Channing Stribling

CB: DJ Turner :: Brandon Watson

S: RJ Moten :: Dymonte Thomas

S: Rod Moore :: Brandon Harrison or Tyree Kinnel

ROTATION / ST:

P: Brad Robbins :: n/a but let’s hope for ZOLTAN

K: Jake Moody :: n/a but how about Lou Groza

PR/KR/WR: AJ Henning :: Chris Evans

PR/KR/WR: Andrel Anthony :: Roy Roundtree

WR/NK: Mike Sainristil :: JD Spielman (!)

OT/OG: Karsen Barnhart :: Jalen Mayfield

LB/RB: Kalel Mullings :: Cam McGrone

Anyone exceed their player comps? Any player comps that have turned out to be spot on or otherwise way off?

a few quick responses:

cade is better than shea, a more complete and better mental athlete than shea.  shea was good, i'm not down on him, but cade is better.

there is no comparison anywhere, at any time, for harbaugh.  period.

erick all can actually block, not something devin funchess ever really did, or at least not on purpose.  all doesn't take plays off while funchess was one of the first michigan players i ever noticed that had, shall we say, a highly variable level of effort.

I feel like Andrel should be more Braylon…..and I’m almost sure Robbins is better than Zoltan and is a known commodity.

I want to chime back in and add obviously Robbins comparison was back as a recruit. So I would say Zoltan was a good comparison. So hopefully you didn’t take it as me knocking that, just saying at this point in his career he’s definitely a know commodity. And I believe he is now better than Zoltan.

The offense comps are....really good?

Defense probably leaves something to be desired, but a lot more player unknowns headed into the season.

EDGE: Mike Morris :: Chris Wormley

EDGE: Taylor Upshaw :: Lawrence Marshall or Chris Wormley

Two Chris Wormley’s on the field at the same time? Yes, please!

But wouldn’t that open up some rift in the space-time continuum or something?

Erick all can block, funchess could not.

Zack Zinter doesn’t have the mental issues that Kalis had.

Kris Jenkins is way less of a nose tackle than Glasgow was.

DJ Turner isn’t nearly the speed liability that Watson was.

Nice work...a few things stand out, thoughts are below. If I didn't comment, IMO, you're spot on, some of these are crazy close.

QB: Cade McNamara :: Shea Patterson

QB: JJ McCarthy :: Jim Harbaugh

RB: Blake Corum :: Mike Hart but fast

RB: Donovan Edwards :: Reggie Bush

WR: Cornelius Johnson :: Amara Darboh

WR: Ronnie Bell :: Jeremy Gallon DISAGREE HERE, Roy Roundtree or Grant Perry but kind of faster. Although he could easily move to Mario Manningham.

WR: Roman Wilson :: Steve Breaston Breaston was so lanky, he was like Caris Levert, the football player. That said, I've got nothing better for Wilson.

TE: Erick All :: Devin Funchess DISAGREE, Funches couldn't block anything. All is much more complete. He's faster than Koger, doesn't have the hands of Jake Butt.

TE: Luke Schoonmaker :: Zach Gentry

LT: Ryan Hayes :: Jake Fisher

LG: Trevor Keegan :: Ben Braden

C: Olu Oluwatimi :: Cesar Ruiz

RG: Zak Zinter :: Kyle Kalis...but better.

RT: Trente Jones :: Erik Magnuson

DEFENSE:

EDGE: Mike Morris :: Chris Wormley I like, would consider Rashaun Gary as well.

DT: Kris Jenkins :: Ryan Glasgow Jenkins is a better athlete and Glasgow played bigger, like a NG. Wormley might fit here.

NT: Mazi Smith :: Willie Henry

EDGE: Taylor Upshaw :: Lawrence Marshall or Chris Wormley  ...Ryan Van Bergen.

SAM: Jaylen Harrell :: Mario Ojemudia

LB: Junior Colson :: Ben Gedeon mixed with Khaleke Hudson. Or Hudson, the MLB version.

LB: Nikhai Hill-Green :: Mike McCray McCray was STIFF. Hill-Green is like a better version of Devin Gil if you're trying to stick to that era of players.

CB: Gemon Green :: Channing Stribling

CB: DJ Turner :: Brandon Watson DISAGREE, David Long or Levert Hill.

S: RJ Moten :: Dymonte Thomas

S: Rod Moore :: Brandon Harrison or Tyree Kinnel Harrison works for playing style, body type is more Jerrod Wilson, but shorter.

ROTATION / ST:

P: Brad Robbins :: n/a but let’s hope for ZOLTAN

K: Jake Moody :: n/a but how about Lou Groza

PR/KR/WR: AJ Henning :: Chris Evans Dennis Norfleet, but better.

PR/KR/WR: Andrel Anthony :: Roy Roundtree

WR/NK: Mike Sainristil :: JD Spielman (!)

OT/OG: Karsen Barnhart :: Jalen Mayfield

LB: Michael Barrett :: Jaylen Samuels (!)

LB/RB: Kalel Mullings :: Cam McGrone

EDGE: Braiden McGregor :: Aidan Hutchinson

DT: Julius Welschof :: Kemoko Turay (!)

DT: Rayshaun Benny :: Alan Branch

CB: Will Johnson :: Marlin Jackson

Skipped over the last few, great list though. A lot of guys from the same era, but nice comps!

Liked Darboh just fine but Johnson is much better.

It's odd, Johnson was kind of an overlooked recruit (even as a four star) and is still sort of ignored even though he was very good last year and has every tool you want in a WR.  I'd say he's a shoo in for All B1G but JSN is obviously taking one of those spots and you never know with these voters

I disagree, we are always hearing about how great Johnson is going to be but it just hasn't transferred to the field.

Darboh was an incredibly underrated possession WR who went for 2,062 yds and 14 TDs in 3 seasons. Johnson has 940 yds and 7 TDs cumulative over the past 3 seasons which is basically Darboh's SR season stat line alone.

I hope your comparisons on the defensive side of the ball come true. If they do, this will be a kick ass team and we will own OSU in Columbus!

Don't like the player comparisons even if they are from Seth.    Only a few make sense.    Bell = JG.   5 foot 7 WR and a 6 foot 1 WR.    Wish he would explain why he picked the players he chose for comparisons.
