Unverified Voracity Points Mother Of All Money Cannons Comment Count

Charity Bowl time. Well, folks, time to liberate 42.27 plus processing fees from your wallets:

Or you could be like Ethan Stark and drop approximately 7k by moving the decimal. I want to see a historic blowout this year. I expect it, really.

In or out. Hunter Dickinson announced a return yesterday; Moussa Diabate has now announced he's going through the draft process:

Diabate will retain his eligibility. That's the smart move for a guy with all the physical potential in the world but little presence on mock drafts or even top 100 lists. He could easily catch someone's eye and get a first round guarantee; or he could get told if he does X and Y next year he'd be a clear lottery pick. I can't remember a stay or go decision more contingent on camp performances. Anonymous NBA scout:

“He is all over the board,” the scout said with a laugh. “The variance with him is crazy.”

SI's draft guy:

Caleb Houstan has announced nothing despite the NBA draft entry deadline passing at midnight last night. The NBA releases the list tomorrow at noon, so we won't have to wait long to find out whether he's also going through the process. I remain skeptical that Houstan is draft viable since last year he only did one thing well—stand-still shooting—and was very much a work in progress as a defender. It's frankly bizarre to me that draft rankings like CBS's have Houstan 37th and no Diabate.

If I had to bet I'd say that at least one team is willing to give Diabate a late first guarantee and that Houstan ends up returning. But [gestures in freezing cold Jordan Poole take].

[Hit THE JUMP for rescue one Aidan Hutchinson from the Lions]

Spicy meatball. Michigan's lined up a "neutral court" game with likely preseason #1 UNC in Charlotte, as part of a Nike thing called the "Jumpman Invitational." So that will be in addition to the ACC/B10 challenge game.

Well, it depends on your perspective. Aidan Hutchinson news of a sort:

That would leave Hutchinson available for the Detroit Lions at #2, which Lions fans probably want to happen but people who wisely stuffed their Lions fandom in the cellar years ago—hi—wish to avoid, lest Hutchinson become another Barry Sanders/Megatron/Suh/Stafford who toils pointlessly in silver and blue until retirement or a daring jailbreak.

Or he'll just be solid in the NFL. Various scouts/coaches Bruce Feldman talked to about the raft were somewhat skeptical:

Defensive coach No. 1: I’m not sure he has quite the ceiling as a few of these guys, but his floor is very high. He’s the safest guy in the draft. Like if they take him, I don’t think anyone’s gonna be like, man, we fucked that pick up. I just don’t think when you watch the film, he doesn’t have that holy crap, how are we gonna block this guy? He just doesn’t have that one rare trait. He’s just a good, talented, high-effort football player.

Defensive coach No. 2: I wouldn’t take him there or even in the top four. He doesn’t have the arm length (32 1/8 inches). I don’t see the twitch. I don’t think he’s got explosiveness where we’d have to take him. There’s nothing special about him athletically to go that high.

This is going to be a fascinating production vs tools outcome since Walker had a total of 3 sacks in college—albeit as a 3-4 DE, a role that probably isn't his best.

Money items. The Big 10 is renegotiating its television contracts; FOX is going to continue to play a big role after expanding its ownership percentage of the BTN to 61%. Awful Announcing on the other networks in the running:

The likes of CBS, NBC, Turner, Amazon, Apple, and obviously ESPN are all very much in play here this time around. And unlike 2016, we may see more than just Fox and another company get a piece of Big Ten rights. As noted in the above quote from Ourand’s piece, it’s possible even three other companies could wind up with Big Ten packages.

That sounds grim, since the reason to slice off a portion of the Big Ten is to compel subscriptions to your streaming service. I think Ben Koo's take here is pretty likely to be accurate:

Thinking about this a bit more, I think Amazon and Apple are actually more  viable as Big Ten media partners than CBS and NBC at this point.  … What I imagine Amazon and Apple would by far be the most interested in is a largely uncontested viewing window. And what sticks out there is Friday night, where the Big Ten has already been putting games as part of their last deal. Amazon and Apple know it’s unlikely they’ll draw casual fans to their games if they are competing with five to fifteen other games competing on easier-to-access networks and cable TV. It’s just not as easy to get someone to change from cable, launch a streaming service, and find a game vs. just changing the channel between different games that are both on tv. But if Apple or Amazon had the only one game on at one time or maybe one of two or three games on a Friday night, that’s of way more value to them, as there is just less competition in that window.

So the theory here is that a tech giant will overpay for your Friday night MSU-Illinois games and hope to make their streaming option more compelling to subscribe to. This is unlikely to affect Michigan directly—IIRC their only Friday night game in recent history was due to a Minnesota Twins playoff game—but would still be annoying.

On the other hand:

The Big Ten has seen increased ratings for wrestling, women’s basketball, and hockey the past few years.  There are subscribers to be had like Minnesota for their hockey team or Iowa and Penn State for their wrestling team and a lot of other smaller pockets of fans out there who subscribe to the service. I think many fans would love BTN+ to be bundled/absorbed into an actual broader service like Amazon Prime or ESPN+, as opposed to being its own little service used a handful of times a year.

If that came coupled with any sort of production value increase it would be a godsend for those of us tired of watching hockey games where goals are scored with said goal literally not on the screen.

Etc.: Kyle Connor is having a banner season. Never good to be in the Chronicle of Higher Education with multiple pictures of men looking sheepish. Portal's impact on spring practice.

Travon Walker had more than 3 sacks in college.  He had 6 last season.

Granted, he may not have had even double-digits for his career, but let's get our number right.

And I'm pretty sure that unnamed defensive coach #2 was just an RCMB poster in disguise.

You know the Lions are a completely irrelevant franchise (and have been for decades) based on the fact that zero NFL fanbases sports hate them.

I’ve never even met a Bears/Packers/Vikes fan with a negative opinion of the Lions.

This.

The Vikes have the seventh-highest winning percentage in NFL history… and zero Super Bowls. The rest of the top 15 teams in all-time winning percentage have combined for 46 Super Bowls (with each winning at least one).

Their 21 playoff wins are the most all-time by a team with zero Super Bowls.

They played in four of the first eleven Super Bowls, lost all four, and haven’t been back since.

They’ve lost six consecutive NFC Championship Games since their last Super Bowl appearance: 1977, 1987 (on the road instead of at home because their scab players went 0-3 during Weeks 4 thru 6), 1998 (the Gary Anderson miss), 2000 (lost 41-0 to Kerry Collins), 2009 (Bountygate), 2017 (lost 38-7 to Nick Foles).

The only thing separating the Vikes from the pre-World Series Red Sox or Cubs is that they play in a region of the country the media doesn’t care about. It’s not romantic to be a Vikes fan. It’s just constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.

And it always drops. Always.

I actually think 3-4 DE may be the best position for Walker. People want to shoehorn him in as an edge rusher because he has good athleticism and testing numbers. But he also has a lack of bend to go with poor pass rush technique and moves. Some of that can be taught but he still seems like an ideal 3-4 end who can get a little pressure while holding the edge and being strong versus the run.

Also as crazy as it is to say, I think the Lions may be the franchise that is the least messy out of the top 4 drafting teams. I would certainly say it seems a better situation than whatever the heck is happening down in Jacksonville.

Walker has more bend than Hutchinson and is fluid out in coverage. He's absolutely a chess piece to move him all over in the front 7. He wasn't asked to pass rush at UGA because Kirby Smart prefers his DL to stop the run and let the LBs clean up plays or get the free rusher on sim blitzes.

Still don't agree with your assessment. Walker shows more fluidity in the open field. I did not see that fluidity as a pass rusher off the LOS.. but he is great at running down ball carriers! When coming out of a three point stance on the line as a 4-3 rush end Hutchinson showed more fluidity than Walker both on tape and in the combine agility drills.

I mean, sure, the Lions could use just about everything on defense so a versatile player like Walker would be effective. But pass rush is such a huge need and Walker just isn't in the same hemisphere as Hutch rushing the passer at this stage.

To keep Diabate, maybe copy the NFL draft / Hutchinson model:

— start a rumor that Diabate's a lottery pick and keep saying it until everyone's repeating it, and then he'll inevitably fall, and return to AA.

(Because you can't keep your Wise Pundit badge unless you declare that you've got a different take than EVERYONE else.)

There’s nothing special about him athletically to go that high.

I don't get this. He tested as good, if not better than both Bosas at the combine. He's 3 inches taller than them (less than an inch shorter arms than Nick Bosa IIRC) about the same weight (and he played 2018-2020 at 285) with a faster 40, 3 cone, vertical and similar broad jump and bench.

This idea that he's a try hard, JAG athlete doesn't line up with the measurables. Does he have great bend? Not to the level of Uche, but that isn't a sign of "explosiveness" or "twitch."

Yeah, I was trying not to make a definite statement 1 way or the other without checking, but I looked at the testing numbers and he did better than both of them and it's not particularly up for debate actually.

40 / Vertical / Broad Jump / 3 Cone / Bench

J Bosa 6'5" 269 - 4.86 / 32 / 120 / 6.89 / Didn't do it

N Bosa 6'4" 266 - 4.79 / 33.5 / 116 / 7.1 / 29

Hutch 6'7" 260 - 4.74 / 36 / 117 / 6.73 / 28

The NFL ostensibly wants edge guys who get to the QB, to the point that the Ravens determined they’re overpaid. Hutch is an SDE.

If I’m allowed to oversimplify, Hutchinson strikes me as an “anti-offensive tackle”. Whatever that OT wants to do, he destroys that. He’ll set an edge like a concrete block and cause the line’s cohesion to break down. What he doesn’t generally do is tear after the QB with abandon because he’s a disciplined (and invariably optioned) defender in an era of, in Brian’s words, “college crappe”. He usually didn’t have playmakers around him such that he could abandon his responsibilities.

Only the one Friday game, and I wouldn't mind if we are left with our only Friday memory being Navarre lumbering down the sideline on the transcontinental in a huge comeback victory.

“The variance with him is crazy.” Concern from the experts best exemplifies my concern re Moussa’s performance & Houstan’s as well. I understand variance in the article is referencing where he falls in draft projections. Both HD & CH    need more growth & development to become reliable performers.

Isn't Diabate an ideal prospect for one of those good teams drafting at the end of the 1st round?  The odds are slim they find someone to help them now so why not take a chance on an super athletic guy who needs development.  Could grow into something great down the road when they would start to need him.

Real Lions fans don't stuff their fandom in the cellar and comparing Hutch to Barry Sanders/Megatron/Suh/Stafford is just unfair period. If any of these guys were in the draft this year they would easily go #1.

I'm not a fan of college football on Friday.  That's when the future stars play for their high schools.  I get this may ring 'get off my lawn' but HS football Friday, college on Saturday, Pro Sunday and Monday has a wonderful beauty and clarity to it.  You strive to play on the next day of the week.

And unless you're a Lions fan, you in theory get to watch a progressively better-executed game each day.
